[cobirds] Curve-billed Thrasher at Red Rocks off and on

2010-10-28 Thread pergrn

The Curve-billed Thrasher has made brief appearances

at the Red Rocks Trading Post thrice today. In addition
to the 0730 sighting posted early by Cole Wild, Dick Schottler
was among a group that saw it for about a minute at 9:40 AM,
but it was not seen again until Bob Brown spotted it at 11:25, when it put in a
brief appearance under the more eastern of the two feeders.

Viewing is best from the balcony, entered through the front (north)
door of the trading post. From that elevated perch both feeders can be seen
well,
and there is less risk of bothering birds at the feeders. The Golden-
crowned and White-throated Sparrows made brief visits to the
ground under the west feeder.

2010-10-28 Thread Brandon K. Percival
Late this afternoon, Margie Joy and I were able to see two female plumage SURF
SCOTERS and one female plumage BLACK SCOTER at Pueblo Reservoir off Sailboard
launching area.  I also counted 8 Common Loons from the middle part of the
reservoir east to the dam, this afternoon as well.

[cobirds] Park County Reservoirs . 10/28

2010-10-28 Thread Jxdrummo
Co birders : Seems we should have gone to Pueblo reservoir today . No
scoters , no murrelets at the three locations . Lapland Longspur and 6 Common
Loons at Elevenmile Res , 1 Common Loon at Spinney Mtn Res and 2 adult
white swans ( probably ) Tundra at Antero . Swans refused to wake up and walk
or swim around so ID very difficult ( visible from south boat launching
area ). Antero had approx 7/8 ths open water , others completely free .
Waterfowl numbers middling except for an abundance of coots. Spotting scope
essential at these locations.

[cobirds] Sandhill Crane/Eagle behaviors

2010-10-28 Thread KevyGudGuy
Several years ago I saw a Golden Eagle stoop on a feeding flock of Greater
Sandhills at the Monte Vista NWR, during the Crane Festival in March. It
came in like a rocket, struck a crane in the standing flock, landed about 20
feet away, then hopped/flew back to dispatch and consume its prey. The
sandhill flock settled back down and went back to feeding, leaving an open
circle of about 50-foot diameter around the eagle.
