[cobirds] More Canon City birds today

2010-12-11 Thread SeEtta Moss
Earlier this morning before I went hiking outside of town, I birded around
Canon City a bit. I stopped by Lakeside Cemetery where I found 4 male and 1
female Williamson's Sapsuckers (almost all car birding). Of significance
were 5 or 6 Townsend's Solitaires, the first I have seen them this here this
season. I subsequently found a number of more Townsend's Solitaires in
other parts of Canon City.

I was also pleased to find a flock of 8 Eastern Bluebirds and a nearby male
Cassin's Finch, a species that move down into Canon City occasionally
(possibly related to the drought). I also enjoyed watching a small flock of
Scaled Quail that were using a juniper tree for shelter. I will post some
photos of some of these birds to my
BirdsAndNatureblog tomorrow. It
was a productive birding day, but I'm tired.

[cobirds] Spotted Northern Goshawk while hiking today

2010-12-11 Thread SeEtta Moss
As I walked back in the dry gulch in pinyon-juniper habitat, I spotted a
juvenile Northern Goshawk perched in a deciduous tree on a ridge several
hundred yards away. It was flushed by a bird that was harassing it and I
got photos of it flying by. Though this may seem like an unusual location
for this species, Andrews and Righter's *Colorado Birds* notes that this
species is "seen in all types of coniferous forests" during winter and
migration. That was certainly a very cool sighting that I didn't expect
today. I have posted several photos on my
BirdsAndNatureblog

[cobirds] More sapsucker use of siberian-type elms in dry gulches

2010-12-11 Thread SeEtta Moss
This morning I hiked a little over a mile in dry gulch where I have been
following the Williamson's Sapsuckers just outside of Canon City. Located
on private property, this gulch goes through both pinyon-juniper and pinyon
woodland habitat. I did find a few more small groves of siberian-type elms
and some recent sap wells (not fresh like still being used but made within
past month or two). I also found my first cottonwood tree, a mall young
tree, with older sap wells. I have posted pics of this grove of trees and
the 'recent' sap wells on my
BirdsAndNature. I checked dozens
of pinyons and junipers and found very old sap wells in
only a few trees. I did not find any sapsuckers but did see several Juniper
Titmice, several Western Scrub Jays and a bunch of Townsend's Solitaires
(and more--see next posts).

I believe that these sapsuckers follow the dry gulches through pinyon
woodlands and pinyon-juniper habitat that virtually surrounds Canon City and
these lead them into town where eureka--they find a veritable gold mine of
succulent long-needled pine trees that receive supplemental water which must
make the sap better.

[cobirds] Ovenbird refound at Fountain Creek Reg Park, EL Paso County

2010-12-11 Thread KENNETH PALS

Cobirders,

While others say the Pine Warbler again today, I was able to refind the
Ovenbird in Area 2 of Fountain Creek Regional Park where it was found and
reported previously. I heard a Winter Wren in the same area and also saw the
Yellow-rumped Warbler. The Harris's Sparrow is still near the
headgate/waterfall area at the start of the Chilcott Irrigation Ditch.

[cobirds] Bohemian Waxwings

2010-12-11 Thread AHilf
Several birders in the Steamboat Springs area have called/e-mailed to let
me know about large flocks of Bohemian Waxwings. Even up in Steamboat, its
not the norm to have such large numbers of Bohemians -- perhaps it will
also be a good year for them in the Denver-metropolitan area. I remember a
a few years ago we had a "so called" invasion of Bohemians in the region
and just wanted to alert birders to look carefully at flocks of waxwings
this winter -- especially during Christmas Bird Counts.

[cobirds] Fountain Creek Regional Park - Pine Warbler

2010-12-11 Thread Robb Hinds
I located the Pine Warbler this morning at around 10:30 today near the
previously reported location. It was very cooperative and I got some good
photos. I stopped by Clear Springs Ranch but did not find the Rusty
Blackbirds.

[cobirds] Iceland Gull update and pics

2010-12-11 Thread Glenn Walbek
Folks,

The 1st cycle Iceland Gull continues at Cherry Creek Reservoir, near the west
end. There are still 7 gull species to be seen, plus many variations of
Ring-billed, Herring and California Gulls. I have loaded several photos of the
Iceland Gull (including Iceland and Thayer's side by side) in a separate
gallery which can be seen from the link below.

[cobirds] Red Rocks 12/11

2010-12-11 Thread Rudi Nuissl
I headed over to Red Rocks this morning to see who I could find.
Aside from the half-dozen people with cameras watching the area around
the platform feeder, I did manage to find three of the four species I
was looking for:

- Curve-Billed Thrasher
- White-Throated Sparrow
- Harris's Sparrow

I did not see the Golden-Crowned Sparrow. There were also the usual
tons of House Finches, House Sparrows, Juncos of all sorts, and Scrub
Jays as well as Black-Capped Chickadees, Song Sparrows, a Spotted
Towhee and a Downy Woodpecker.

I've posted the three Lifers above to my Flickr stream (
http://www.flickr.com/photos/rudi_noodle/ ).

More will be posted later.

[cobirds] Baseline Res. scoters 12/11

2010-12-11 Thread Scott Severs
The previously reported White-winged and Black Scoter were both present in
the northeast corner of Baseline Reservoir (Boulder) at 1045 hours this
morning. The White-wing Scoter extends its wings slightly as it dived,
giving very nice looks at the white secondaries, on the other hand the Black
Scoter was not using its wings during its dives.

Good birding!
