[cobirds] Denver CBC results
The Denver CBC was held Saturday, December 18th. The preliminary compilation results counted up 103 species. A few areas were not able to make the compilation and results from the feeder watchers are still being tabulated and will be submitted in a few days, so the total will like be one to three species higher. Notables were: Ross's Goose Tundra Swan Long-tailed Duck Pacific Loon Bonaparte's Gull (first for the count) Thayer's Gull Glaucous Gull Lesser Black-backed Gull Say's Phoebe Eastern Winter Wren Curve-billed Thrasher (first for the count) White-throated Sparrow Golden-crowned Sparrow Harris's Sparrow Rusty Blackbird A note on the Winter Wren. Several of us were 90% sure it was a Pacific Wren after viewing it for about 5 minutes (excellent light, in the open, etc.). The bird looked a warm, orange-buff on the entire undersides (throat, breast and belly all a uniform color) After Glenn Walbek got some photos it became pretty obvious that it was a Winter Wren (pale throat, . I obviously need to learn more about this species. I can't trust my eyes to record accurate color. Lesson Learned: Look at the bird, but only trust a photograph to confirm the species as a visual can often be incorrect with the stub-tailed wren species. [cobirds] cedar waxwings, solitaires Centennial/Arapahoe County
There was a flock of 100 cedar waxwings at Holly and Orchard mid-morning; inspection of over 30 of them revealed no Bohemians. A Townsend's solitaire has been singing from the tree over my house today. Two more solitaires are across the street, visible and calling. About three days a week (last time was yesterday) 6 or so bushtits strike my suet feeder. [cobirds] Another Pine Warbler in Ft. Collins!?
Yesterday at 8:20 (ten minutes earlier then our first report) the pine warbler came to our little Ft. Collins home. The things different this time was he was three feet from my face and we actually got some pictures of tha little fella. Also we comfirmed our sitting with another skilled birder. The temp was 19 degrees at that time over here in the Four Season Neighborhood. Also this time we was on the same exact feeder (a pinecone that was covered with peanut butter and millet). We are sensing a trend in when it comes but it definently could come at any time. Skyler Bol -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Colorado Birds group. [cobirds] Colorado Springs - TWO Harris' Sparrows at Fountain Creek
I am pretty sure both birds in this picture are Harris' sparrows, they were in the drainage ditch downstream from where the first one was reported. I saw these this afternoon while looking for the pine warbler which I am 0/3 on! http://avoapples.com/birds/IMG_6901_4x6.jpg Bill Kosar bill_ko...@msn.com -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Colorado Birds group. [cobirds] Re: Another Pine Warbler in Ft. Collins!?
Aside from the (this) Pine Warbler on the Fort Collins CBC if my memory serves me well I think heard 3 White-throated Sparrows and two Harris's Sparrows also on CBC. I'm sure someone will post results soon. [cobirds] Boulder CBC Results
Folks- we had 30+ energetic teams plus a network of feeder watchers deployed throughout the Boulder CBC circle today, enjoying the mild weather and some pretty spiffing birds. For the first time in 69 counts dating back to Dec. 26 1909, the Boulder count broke the 110-species mark, with an preliminary total of 112 recorded today. We also had a presumed escapee (though free-flying) Mandarin Duck for the second year, along with two count-week species. With a few team and many feeder-watcher reports still to be received, I hope we will add another species or two before data entry is wrapped. So for now we're at 112 + the Mandarin Duck + 2 Count-week birds (WHSC CAGU.) This is a new record for the Boulder Count, and our first time to break 110. Still missing but seen on at least 20 previous counts (reports welcomed from today or as count-week from the previous three next three days): Rough-legged Hawk, Ring-necked Pheasant, Cassin's Finch, White-throated Sparrow, Snow Goose, Dusky Grouse, Bohemian Waxwing. News of any other potential goodies welcome, too, of course! Best Birds: (Seen on 10 or fewer of 68 previous counts, number indicated in parenthesis, omitting Cackling Goose Eurasian Collared-Dove:) Greater White-fronted Goose Lesser Goldfinch (10), Clark's Grebe Black-crowned Night-Heron (9), Barn Owl (8), Lincoln's Sparrow (6), Tundra Swan Eared Grebe (5), Northern Saw-whet Owl House Wren (3), Bonaparte's Gull Palm Warbler (2), Mandarin Duck*, Red-necked Grebe, Golden-crowned Sparrow (1), Black Scoter White-winged Dove (count-week only previously), Pacific Wren (new to count after AOU split.) Special thanks to Bill Kaempfer for hosting the compilation potluck, and thanks to everyone who participated today! [cobirds] White-throated sparrow
I birded Rocky Mountain Arsenal this morning with my wife and father- in-law. We had a first winter White-throated Sparrow on the northern peak of Lake Ladora among a mixed flock of White-crowned and American Tree Sparrows. The frozen lake kept the majority of waterfowl away, with the exception of Mallards, a female Common Goldeneye, and two male Hooded Mergansers. Two Ferruginous Hawks were a highlight for me, as an eastern-U.S. resident. [cobirds] Golden-crowned Swamp Sparrows, etc. Boulder 12/19
The imm. Golden-crowned Sparrow continues in the windbreak junipers at Teller Farms Open Space parking lot off Valmont Rd. added today to the Boulder CBC. A Swamp Sparrow was in the marsh on the east side of Teller Lake. Two distinctly different Harlan's Hawks at either end of the trail (Valmont and Arapahoe trailheads). Also alerted to by a mob of birds, a N. Saw-whet Owl at a private residence. Snapshots of the bird at this link: http://picasaweb.google.com/scottesevers/NSawWhetOwlDec192010# In Lyons yesterday during the Longmont CBC, no less than four Winter Wrens that we tried to divine a least one into Pacific, but seemingly just not enough evidence. Plus no less than 35 American Dippers, mostly in the city limits of Lyons in the St. Vrain River.
