[cobirds] Arapaho National Wildlife Refuge, Jackson County

2011-07-12 Thread Tina Jones

Hi all,On 7/11, Peggy Wait and I saw 1, gorgeous ad. Peregrine Falcon in
Arapaho National Wildlife Refuge [Jackson County]. The bird was seen off the
auto tour road. When heading west on the tour road from the main entrance, the
bird was seen near the last pond [north and near the road], before one comes to
the end of the auto tour, and arrives at highway 125. I am thinking the bird
was a female because of the Peregrine's large size. Happy Birding!Tina

[cobirds] American 3-Toed Woodpeckers Larimer

2011-07-12 Thread COBirds
Sunday, I did the Deadman Road BBS near Red Feather Lakes and had lots
of 3-toeds . The second gate on Deadman Road was still closed so I
completed the route (3 miles) on bike. I saw 8 in the first 2 miles
along the creek bottom. They started a half mile from the second gate
and should be easy to find. I have not looked if they opened the
second gate o the Forest Service website, but it should be soon. In
addition to that, I had 2 Bushtits (I assumed nonbreeding) 0.3 mile
past the junction of Deadman Rd and 73E.

[cobirds] nighthawks on the move, Larimer

2011-07-12 Thread arvind panjabi
Cobirders,

On Sunday evening (7/10) at 6:45 pm I had about 50-75 common nighthawks fly
over
my house and neighborhood on the north side of Milner mountain, southwest of
Fort Collins. They pased by within 5 minutes and were essentially heading
straight south. Since their arrival in late May, I've only ever had 1-2 on any
given evening in my neck of the woods.

Yesterday (7/11), I had 13 common nighthawks zoom low directly over my house at
6:20 pm (even one at eye-level), again heading straight south, and were not
seen
again. Seems early for the southbound migrants, but perhaps they had some
massive breeding failure up north and figured life is better in the Amazon.

best,

[cobirds] El Paso county --- doves/flycatcher/humminbird

2011-07-12 Thread Mark Peterson
COBirders,

Just some odds and ends from my yard which is on the east side of Colorado
Springs.  First the odd thing, I have had a CORDILLERAN FLYCATCHER the last two
days singing every song I think it knows.  This is an annual species for my
yard (1 or 2 each late spring) but this bird is more than a month off of that.
I first heard it doing its dawn song yesterday around 10 a.m. and since I have
heard it do many things including things I have never heard from a Cordy.  I
guess it is trying hard to find a mate?

I also had my first juv. WHITE-WINGED DOVE of the year this past Saturday.
This is about 2 weeks sooner than I have ever had them.  I have had
White-winged Doves since 2003 including young birds every year.

And the last thing of note is that I had my first CALLIOPE HUMMINGBIRD today
which in itself is no big deal but what is interesting is that 7 out of the
last 9 years I have had my first Calliope on July 12th.  The other two years
one showed up on 7/14 and the other on 7/16.  As for Rufous, it has shown up 3
out the last 9 on the 12th but that has been the latest I have had them show
up.  I have not seen a Rufous here yet this year.

[cobirds] Yuma County Scissor-tailed Flycatcher

2011-07-12 Thread Joe Roller
While atlasing out east today, I found and photographed an adult
Scissor-tailed Flycatcher along Yuma County Road Y, just south of Road 59,
near the Phillips/Yuma County line.
The Amherst area northeast of Holyoke in Phillips County has received 6
inches of rain in the past four days.
