[cobirds] Black Phoebe at Florence River Park & follow-up on the Harlan's Hawks I photographed Sunday

2012-02-21 Thread SeEtta Moss
Yesterday I found a Black Phoebe at Florence River Park, located just north
of the Fremont Sanitation District. I heard a faint 'tsip' call and after
some looking found the calling phoebe. I don't know if there are any other
Black Phoebes on the Canon City Riverwalk as I am still healing and
avoiding longer walks.

I received confirmation that the jet black Harlan's Hawk I photographed
Sunday, that has some apparent white 'underfeathers' on it's nape and is
lacking white on forehead, is consistent with dark morph Harlan's Hawk. I
have uploaded photos of the second Harlan's Hawk I saw, an intermediate
morph with the more classical plumage, onto my Birds and Nature
blog.
I forgot to mention that I have a professionally made video (a TED
presentation) under the Harlan's Hawk blog entries that discusses the
problems that tar sand oil excavation presents to the many species of birds
that have nested in the Boreal Forests of Canada. And I have the streaming
video of the Decorah Bald Eagle nest on my blog--I saw 2 eggs in the nest
this morning.

Besides the warm and dry conditions from this winter, birds are also going
to have to deal with changes in plant phenology. I have seen a number of
trees starting to blossum for the past several weeks. I have a rose bush
with several leaves fully out as of last week-end. Shrubs starting to
blossum also, including native species. Not good.

All -

Chuck's information is correct, but not quite complete.

A "Resident Annual" Fishing License is $26, however the first purchase
of a hunting/fishing license requires an additional purchase of a $10
Habitat Stamp bringing the outlay to $36.

For 2011, I chose to purchase a fishing license as opposed to the
special permit required for Prewitt/Jumbo because I have more
confidence that the revenues collected from the sale of
hunting/fishing licenses will be utilized for habitat purchase and
protection.

[cobirds] Red Rocks Jeffco, Snowy Owl, Adams Co.

2012-02-21 Thread Kayleen A Niyo
Mary Cay Burger, her brother John who is visiting from Spokane, and I
visited Red Rocks Park this morning about 9 a.m. I put out some seed and
the flock of 40-50 rosy-finches that were hanging out in the crevices of the
rock wall came in to feed, along with all 5 juncos, one Song Sparrow, one Am
Tree Sparrow, scrub jays, many House Finches including one yellow male. I
did not see the Golden-crowned Sparrow, but I was photographing the rosys.
Found a Northern Shrike in the Shiprock Parking lot.

Then we went up to 138th and Harvest Dr in Adams Co. about 1 p.m. and found,
along with two other birders, the juv Snowy Owl along the same pipeline
parallel to 138th and directly north of it, the same place that I saw it on
8 Jan. As Doug said yesterday, from the corner of Harvest Dr, turn west
about ¼ mi and park along the edge of the road. Look north and the SNOW
sits along that pipeline. It seems to have more white on the top and top
back of the head than it did in Jan, IF it is the same bird. I photographed
it and will see if they turned out. It was sitting in a clump of weeds.

We stopped at Barr L. Flushed 26 robins out of a couple of shelterbelts,
but nothing else. The lake is partially melted. I counted 22 Bald Eagles
on the ice or in the cottonwoods. Of those, 9 were juvs. We also saw a
Merlin hunting near Barr L.

[cobirds] North Park Flight Cage Destroyed

2012-02-21 Thread Rachel Hopper
Posted with the permission of the list manager.

COBirders,

Many of you know Deb McLachlan through the Moose Visitor Center in Jackson
County. I am sure she has provided many of you with great birding experiences
and maybe even a lifer rosy-finch.

What many of you probably don't know is that Deb also owns and runs the
non-profit North Park Wildlife Rehab Center.

Deb rehabs many birds and other animals and within the last year even took in
and successfully treated an injured Common Loon! She kept it in the bathtub in
her house! That is dedication folks.

If you read below you will see that Deb's flight cage at NPWR was totally
destroyed on Dec. 31st by 120mph winds. Fortunately no rehabbing birds were
injured but Deb is now facing a huge financial strain in order to rebuild the
cage.

Please think about contributing any amount to help NPWR recover. And say hi to
Deb next time you are at the Moose Visitor Center looking at birds.

Many thanks,
Rachel Hopper

[cobirds] "ground effect" and flying efficiency

2012-02-21 Thread Peter Ruprecht
Last weekend Ted Floyd reported an astonishing long-distance, ground-skimming
glide by a prairie falcon over snow-covered open country near Superior.  Those
of you with an interest in aerodynamics may already know about the "ground
effect" that this falcon was likely exploiting.  Those of you who have ever
watched brown pelicans soaring over calm seas will have seen them glide with
high efficiency just inches off the water ... it's the same idea.

Flying close to a smooth surface suppresses tip vortices and also allows the
wing downwash angle to be reduced; both effects significantly reduce drag.
Depending on the distance from the ground and the details of the wing shape,
drag may be about half the expected value (in pelicans) and as little as 10%
(in black skimmers.)  For more details on studies in birds, see
http://jeb.biologists.org/content/135/1/431.full.pdf .

Apparently Boeing has designed a transoceanic cargo plan (nicknamed "Pelican")
that relies on the ground effect just as real pelicans do!

[cobirds] Rosy-Finches + Golden-crowned Sparrow - Red Rocks - Jeffco

2012-02-21 Thread mike

Good Morning All,

Between 7:00 and 7:15 this morning all the rarities appeared at the
feeders behind the Red Rocks Trading Post. The Golden-crowned Sparrow
put in an appearance about 7:05 A.M. followed shortly thereafter by a
mixed flock of about 40 Rosy-Finches. Most were Gray-crowned with
some Hepburn's, 4-5 Black Rosy-Finches, and only 1 Brown-capped that I
could see. The flock was perched on the large cliffs to the south
when I left around 7:15 A.M.
