[cobirds] Golden-crowned Sparrow+ Red Rocks-Jeffco
Hello All, Checked out the feeders behind the Red Rocks Trading Post this morning and observed the Golden-crowned Sparrow come out of the brush around 8:00 A.M.and feed on the ground next to a classic White-winged Junco. The female Prairie Falcon was perched on top of Frog Rock and the male was perched on top of Park Cave Rock preening. Heard them calling several times but no other interaction between the pair. Checked out Ship Rock and still no Peregrine Falcons; did not see the Ravens come to their nest on the west end of Creation Rock - last week they were visiting and working on the nest nonstop. The Golden Eagle is sitting on her nest in Bear Creek Canyon below Idledale and saw the male flying low over the ridges west of the nest. This is the first time I have observed the Golden Eagle on the nest (checked last Friday), but she is difficult to see (almost impossible until she moves her head), so she could have been there last week and I just didn't see her. [cobirds] Varied Thrush in Fort Collins (Larimer) again
In my last post, I forgot to fill in the blank with the date when the male Varied Thrush in the yard of Ken Allen at 1719 Ticonderoga Drive first started showing up but it was around January 20, 2013 (i.e., 7 weeks ago). There are now 5 Mountain Bluebirds (4m, 1f) at the Sharptail Ridge parking area. Dave Cameron Denver -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Colorado Birds group. [cobirds] Lincoln's Sparrow - Douglas Co.
There’s a Lincoln’s Sparrow outside my window right now. A probable early spring migrant? Spring is sneaking up on us! I’ll try to get photos of it. [cobirds] Purple Finch, Larimer County, CO
Hello CoBirders, On the Larimer Campus of Front Range Community College this morning, I heard and then located a male Purple Finch. I could not place the vocalizations I was hearing until I found what they were coming from sitting in a tree by one of the college buildings. The wandering finches I have seen in the past have never stuck around for long, but there may be a chance it is still in the area even though it flew away while I was watching it. Good luck to anyone who may want to search for it. Sean Walters Loveland, CO -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Colorado Birds group. [cobirds] Common Redpoll, Aurora, Arapahoe County
At about 2 PM we had a brief visit to our finch tube feeder by a beautiful adult male Common Redpoll. Then the Cooper's Hawk blew the group up, haven't seen him since. Great new yard bird! She promised to come back when the trail conditions were better. The morning hike up was very icy. Only a few hikers braved the bad trail conditions. Weather: Cool with a moderate wind generally from the north in the morning and east in the afternoon. Partly cloudy with more sun than clouds. Raptor Observations: Six migrating Red-tailed Hawks were counted with observations on the eastern side of Dino Ridge, and over and in front of the west ridges. Sightings were generally at eye level and then gained significant elevation as they moved north. Local Red-tailed Hawks gave the observers many close sightings including a pair in courtship behavior. These were mostly over the valley between the observation site and Green Mountain with relatively little local activity over the western ridges. A local Prairie Falcon perched on a power pole east of the observation site. Non-raptor Observations: Seen and/or heard were Townsend's Solitaire, Western Scrub-Jay, Black-billed Magpie, American Robin, Common Raven, Dark-eyed Junco, and Northern Flicker. Forty or more elk below and north of two pines and another group of about a dozen near Cabrini. Predictions: Possibly similar? The trail improved some during the day but is expected to be fairly icy in the morning and sloppy in the afternoon for at least one more day. The site itself is mostly dry. Report submitted by Rocky Mountain Bird Observatory (jeff.bi...@rmbo.org) Dinosaur Ridge information may be found at: http://www.rmbo.org/ Site Description: Dinosaur Ridge is the only regularly staffed hawkwatch in Colorado and is the best place in the world to see migrating Ferruginous Hawks. Dinosaur Ridge may be the best place in the country to see the rare dark morph of the Broad-winged Hawk (a few are seen each spring). Hawkwatchers who linger long enough may see resident Golden Eagles, Red-tailed Hawks and Prairie Falcons, in addition to migrating Swainson's, Cooper's and Sharp-shinned Hawks, American Kestrels and Turkey Vultures. Peregrine Falcons and Ferruginous Hawks are uncommon; Northern Goshawk is rare but regular. Non-raptor species include Rock Wren, and sometimes Bushtit, Western Bluebird, Sandhill Crane, White-throated Swift, American White Pelican or Dusky Grouse. Birders are always welcome. The hawkwatch is generally staffed by volunteers from the Rocky Mountain Bird Observatory from about 9 AM to around 4 PM from the first week of March to the first week of May. Directions to site: From exit 259 on I-70 towards Morrison, drive south under freeway and take left into first parking lot, the Stegosaurus lot. Follow small signs from the south side of lot to hawkwatch site. The hike starts heading
