[cobirds] Re: flood clousures notices Boulder County
Hello, Birders. As John Tumasonis notes, it's challenging to get around Boulder County right now, and it's illegal to go birding at many hot spots in the county. But as John also says, there's a lot out there, everywhere. Walk around your neighborhood for just four or five minutes, and you'll hear the wenk? call of a Wilson's Warbler. Find a clump of willows, pish at it, and out will pop a half dozen Willys. I feel compelled to comment on a Gray Flycatcher that I reported yesterday, Friday, September 13th, to eBird. The birds was just south of the Teller Farms parking area off Valmont Road. It was in an area that is illegal to enter--a point several of you have raised with me in private e-correspondence! But the bird wasn't yet illegal when I was there... :-) The yellow tape musta gone up right after I left. So the bird is now, it would seem, not legally chaseable. Sorry! By the way, the night flight overnight, Friday-Saturday, Sept. 13-14, was decent over Lafayette. [cobirds] Common Terns at Cherry Creek State Park (Arapahoe county)
This morning, 4 Common Terns were identified among the large number of Black Terns (100) and few Forster's Terns (2) during the fall count at Cherry Creek State Park. Perhaps it would be best to wait till after the current thunderstorm/hailstorm to check it out! Thanks to all who came, besides the Terns, our best find was an adult male Townsend's Warbler in the trees around the structures at the Smoky Hill Group Picnic area. [cobirds] YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHER, Mourning Warbler, Blue-headed Vireos at Flagler.
Doug Kibbe just called me to report that he and Mackenzie Goldthwaite found that birds are hopping this afternoon (Sat, Sept 14) at Flagler Reservoir SWA, just east of the town of Flagler, is in Kit Carson County. They estimated an astounding ONE HUNDRED empids, mostly below the dam (including a YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHER), with the other usual suspects, Great Crested, etc. In trees along the lakeshore were four Blue-headed Vireos, a Mourning Warbler, many other birds. This is not a comprehensive list, but gives one the idea that there are a lot of birds have congregated there. Will they still be there Sunday morning? En route to Flagler, they saw a Blue-headed Vireo at Last Chance. Joe Roller, Denver -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Colorado Birds group. [cobirds] BLUE-WINGED WARBLER on Canon City Riverwalk this morning
I found a BLUE-WINGED WARBLER this morning on the Canon City Riverwalk just on the east side of the old sewer district tanks near the Sell's Lake trailhead. It flew up into a small elm where I was trying to photograph some Wilson's Warblers and I got a brief, but clear, view from only about 30 feet away--very bright yellow head and underparts, dark wings with white wing bars and whitish undertail coverts. I watched with my binoculars to get field marks before trying for a photo as should be done and it flitted off before I could get my camera on it--as much as I wanted a photo it's ok because I did get the field marks clear and had I tried for a photo I might have got a blurry shot with no definitive description. This is about the third I have seen in Colorado but nice to get one less than a mile from my house-and I think it may be the first in Fremont County, at least per Colo County Birding lists. Since the Wilson's Warblers were continuing to feed in vegetation (native licorice and tall unknown grass/forb) nearby I continued to look for the Blue-winged for another half hour without success. I did see at least 6 Wilson's Warblers, all I saw clearly were adult males and they mostly foraged within a foot or two of the ground in that vegetation. I had to leave for an hour due to one of my other commitment today but came back and looked in same area then around the Riverwalk for another 2 hours. Saw a number of additional Wilson's Warblers, again the one's I saw clearly were all adult males, a couple of Gray Catbirds and a Cooper's Hawk. I heard a lot of warbler chips from thick shrub vegetation but had been in some earlier when I thought about how much fun it would be to surprise a sleeping bear so stayed mostly out of the thickets (did see a couple of bear scat deposits, one from a larger bear in the several hundred pound range). Also almost stepped on a 3 1/2 foot long Red-racer snake that saw me first and slithered away making clear it's upset . I also saw an Eastern Phoebe on the other side of the Arkansas River (more about Eastern Phoebes moving through the area later). [cobirds] Barr Lake - Adams County
I made it out to Barr Lake this afternoon and I thought I was having a good day. Then I read Meredith's post. Apparently, some of the good birds that I found were caught earlier in the morning, so none of them have any stealth capabilities whatsoever. No wonder I was able to find them all. They were still great to see, even though I have very few photos to show for it. Among the better ones for the counters to be on the lookout for tomorrow are: Nashville Warbler (irrigation canal) Townsend's Warbler (irrigation canal) Clay-colored Sparrow (canal near the picnic area past the banding station) MacGillavray's Warbler Osprey with a fish Yellow-billed Cuckoo with a black bill (young. Yellow orbital ring and rufous in the wings) (Pioneer Trail) Great-crested Flycatcher (Pioneer Trail) Cassin's Kingbird (picnic area past the banding station - opposite side of canal) Green-tailed Towhee Golden-winged Warbler (canal near the picnic area past the banding station) Vesper Sparrow (same area as the GWWA) Western Tanager (Pioneer Trail) There were also many other flycatchers, which included (some definite, some possible) Hammond's, Cordilleran, Olive-sided. Good photos were few and far between, but the cuckoo came out okay in one. Some of the others are on the link below my name. [cobirds] RMBO Barr Banding Station Report, 9/14/13
A perfectly beautiful banding morning at Barr - a respectable number of birds (55 new and 1 return from last year), lots of species (20), and, as mentioned in an earlier post, 2 Barr rarities (a Great-crested Flycatcher and a Golden-winged Warbler). And lots of visitors with whom to share it all! We arrived with some trepidation; I expected we'd spend the morning resetting nets and mucking around in mud. But Barr was relatively untouched by the storm. Michelle Seubert, the Park Manager, stopped by (with homemade chocolate chip cookies!) and told us that they had 6+ inches of rain but no serious problems. The weather was pleasant - cool, partly sunny. It was difficult to remember that there was devastation so close by. A lot of moisture still in the air, and lots of insects for food. The birds were frisky, and most showed good levels of fat. Here's the breakdown: Downy Woodpecker2 Dusky Flycatcher 1 Unidentified Empid 1 Great-crested Flycatcher 1 (John, I saw your photo, and I think this was a different bird..so 2 GCFLs around Barr today?! This was the first ever banded at Barr) Cassin's Vireo 1 House Wren 1 Swainson's Thrush1 Hermit Thrush 2 (FOS) Gray Catbird1 Orange-crowned Warbler 5 Golden-winged Warbler 1 (John, I'll e-mail you my photo to compare with what you saw. This was the 5th ever banded at Barr) Nashville Warbler 2 (On any other day, this would have been a great bird. We've never caught more than 2 in a season, so 2 in a day is pretty cool.) Yellow Warbler2 Common Yellowthroat 3 new, 1 return (banded 8/12) Wilson's Warbler 28 Green-tailed Towhee1 (FOS) Lincoln's Sparrow1 Black-headed Grosbeak 1 (FOS, and actually pretty rare for this station) Recap Hammond's Flycatcher, and Black-capped Chickadee rounded out the species for the day. Banding tomorrow dependent entirely on the rain! Hoping for a chance at another good day! [cobirds] Eastern Phoebe at Fountain Creek (El Paso County) 9/14
On a walk around Fountain Creek Regional Park this evening we came across an *Eastern Phoebe* just south of the 'Grandfather Cottonwood'. The bird popped out of a willow, wagged its tail a few times, then flew off towards the Nature Center pond. In the same area there was a beautiful active Great Horned Owl. There were a few other good birds around, but it was expectedly pretty quiet in the evening. [cobirds] El Paso county, Ramah SWA 9/14/13
COBirders, Today my boys and I made a trip out to Ramah SWA, northeast El Paso county. We were mostly looking for bugs but still managed to look at a few birds. The highlights were THREE (that is a lot for El Paso county) BALTIMORE ORIOLEs. Two adult males and then a third female type bird. The other real highlight as for me it is only the second I have ever seen in the county was a FIELD SPARROW. There were about 20 CLAY-COLORED SPARROWs and a single CHIPPING SPARROW. Undoubtedly there were more than just that single Chipping but that is all I saw. We also had an Archilochus species but just did not get a good enough look at it and no chance to photograph it. All of this was in the afternoon. Not much else of interest but I suspect timing and lack of concentrating on the birds played a part in that. - Mark Peterson Colorado Springs -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Colorado Birds group. [cobirds] Swainson's Hawks ground feeding Boulder County
I went past the Little Gaynor Lake on Oxford Road east of 95th Street in Niwot this afternoon, a number of ducks, including some spiffy looking Ruddy Ducks, and then watched three immature Swainson's Hawks along 95th Street between Oxford and Niwot Roads as they foraged for insects on the ground. It was amusing to watch them run, chase, and pounce on what looked like grasshoppers. With all due respect to the beautiful Swainson's, they do look a bit like chickens running around like that!
