[cobirds] Steller's Jays, SE Fort Collins, Larimer
To continue the thread on Steller's Jays east of the foothills, there was one at my home in SE Ft. Collins on Nov 1st and I photographed another today at my feeders. It could have been the same bird, no way to be sure. I live 4-5 miles east of the foothills. This is only the second time I've seen them here in 15 years. The other time was when we had a winter invasion of Western Scrub-Jays and Steller's Jays a few years back. Am wondering if this might be another invasion year. Larry Griffin Ft. [cobirds] Ross's Goose, Denver
I quickly stopped by Fort Logan Cemetery this afternoon. It is in Denver County, off of S. Sheridan, on the east side of S. Sheridan. One Ross's Goose[white morph], was with a lot of Cackling Geese and other Canada Geese, at the first pond on your right as you enter the cemetery. Not much else was at the cemetery. Happy Birding ! [cobirds] Morgan and Weld Today
Greetings All Today I spent the first 6 hours of the day at Jackson (State Park/Reservoir- Weld County), which was fun as usual. At the outlet channel, at the southern tip of the reservoir, there were >50 Least Sands, 2 Pec Sands, and 9 LB Dowitchers.. nice for November. Also there were 4 Thayer's Gulls (2 adults, 2 juvs) and a fair number of Herring Gulls (25 or so)... and a GW x Western Gull hybrid (picture a GW Gull with darker wing tips; stouter of body and bill than a GW x Herring hybrid). At the visitor center in the state park, there was a vocal Gray Catbird and a couple singing Townsend's Solitaires. Birds seemed to be moving in and out of the state park as I traversed the Russian Olive thickets. The aforementioned cooperative Northern Parula was the highlight, but a Wilson's Warbler wasn't bad for November either, and a White-throated Sparrow was a nice add-on. Also, there was a getting-late Brown Thrasher. Hundreds of robins, dozens of flickers, but relatively few WC Sparrows and juncos... don't know why. As I was land-birding, thousands of Cackling Geese were coming into the reservoir. With them was a handful of Ross's Geese including a stunning blue-morph... a bird the existence of which was debated a couple decades ago. They seem to be increasing, but the entire population is probably just a few hundred. On my way back -Weld CR 59 was frozen -Loloff was full of birds, but nothing unusual. Lotsa Canvasback -Lower Latham needs an early AM visit when lighting is better, but I was lucky enough to have an adult BL Kittiwake fly around reasonably close (for Latham) in good light. -Stewart's Pond was chock full of waterfowl, including 3 GWF Geese, 2 Ross's Geese, and a Mallard x Am Wigeon hybrids. - Union was packed with birds as well, but nothing unusual excepting the > 100 Red-breasted Mergansers there A rather fabulous day Good Birding Steve Mlodinow -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Colorado Birds" group. Re: [cobirds] Who's missing? Where did they go?
This was a very interesting email and I have also noted the lack of some normal birds. What we do have every day for about a week now are Stellar's Jays at our feeders near the foothills in Fort Collins. Also today on Reservoir Ridge I saw a flock of about 6 Stellar's and this is really unusual. Can anyone comment on this? I also saw several American Tree sparrows. I have seen several (FOS) Scrub Jays in the foothills and at Soapstone. We do not have many juncos per normal but we do have a regular group of about 3 blue jays. Normally we have Scrub Jays at the feeders and I haven't seen any yet. [cobirds] Re: Who's missing? Arapahoe CO Aurora
In response to Hugh's posting: In our small, suburban, southeast Aurora yard, house finches predominate, but we usually have some house sparrows too. We have not seen any sparrows for a couple of months. We do have a few black capped chickadees at the feeders and three blue jays regularly looking for peanuts. [cobirds] Parasitic Jaeger 2 days ago at Adobe Creek Reservoir (Kiowa County)
2 days ago I had the pleasure of seeing a life bird, a Parasitic Jaeger, with Dwayne Nelson and Janael Thompson at Adobe Creek Reservoir (Blue Lake) in Kiowa County. The bird put on a spectacular show of "kleptoparasitism" going after several Ring-billed Gulls in flight. On one occasion I observed the Jaeger pursue the gull in a descending corkscrew fashion toward the lake. I also learned from Dwayne that the Jaeger actually can pick out gulls with full crops and somehow force the gull to regurgitate its food. I looked online this morning for examples of this and found these rather dramatic photos of the process. Worth a look: http://www.pbase.com/birdfedr/parasitic_jaeger Thanks to Janael and Dwayne for giving me the opportunity to see this spectacular show.
