[cobirds] Surf Scoter-Weld County

2013-11-18 Thread Russ Thompson
This morning at 10:00 there was a Surf Scoter on the lake at the Frederick
Recreation Area on Colorado Blvd between Hwy 119 and Hwy 52. There were
also 100+ Ruddy Ducks, about 8 Common Goldeneyes, Canada and Cackling Geese.
The Eastern Towhee reported by Cathy Sheeter remains at the Banner Lakes
SWA in Weld County, and was easy to find thanks to her excellent directions.

[cobirds] Bent and Kiowa Counties, 11/18/13

2013-11-18 Thread Duane Nelson

Birders,

This isn't exactly a rare bird report, but it includes some birds of
local interest. I went to Adobe Creek Reservoir (aka "Blue Lake") this
morning, mostly to see if winter storage water in the Fort Lyon Storage
Canal is entering the lake. It is. The canal company has decided to
store water in Adobe Creek Reservoir this winter instead of in Lakes
Henry and Meredith, good news for Piping Plovers, Least Terns and
birders with affinities for Kiowa and Bent County lists. I think the
south lake (in Bent County) will begin to fill within days.

At Adobe Creek Reservoir, I searched for, and did not relocate, the
adult Parasitic Jaeger, but it's a big lake and I could have missed it.
I did see one late Long-billed Dowitcher. The lake is still swarming
with ducks and gulls, but I didn't pick out anything noteworthy.

I drove to the Ft. Lyon VA cemetery from the five-way junction at Ft.
Lyon. I had one Steller's Jay in the junipers leading to the cemetery,
quite noteworthy this far east. I searched in vain for LeConte's and
other marsh sparrows near Ft. Lyon. I then went to the new Karney State
Wildlife area, north of US 50 along Gageby Creek. This is a spectacular
winter bird site newly open to the public. I found another two Steller's
Jays here, and they were very vocal and cooperative. They preferred
Russian olives, tall cottonwoods, and coming to the creek to drink. Also
here were Yellow-rumped Warblers and a Ruby-crowned Kinglet.

Finally, I went to John Martin Reservoir. I didn't feel comfortable
attempting to walk across the mudflats on the west end of the reservoir
to look for marsh and water birds, as waterfowl season is underway, and
hunters have staked out multiple territories. At least one occupied duck
blind was at the junction of the Arkansas River and the lake, which was
my intended destination, so I left. I did walk along the Arkansas River
below the dam at John Martin Reservoir, and easily found two Rusty
Blackbirds at the easternmost rock crossing below the small dam.

[cobirds] Pueblo birds 11/18 (4 sp. of warblers and 1 sp. of vireo)

2013-11-18 Thread Brandon K. Percival

I started along the Arkansas River, below Pueblo Reservoir dam, near the
footbridge, where Chris Knight and I saw two Rusty Blackbirds, one winter male
and one winter female, and then we saw a Winter Wren and Say's Phoebe.  Just
east of Valco Ponds parking lot, the Common Yellowthroat continues.

After Chris left, I went into the Pueblo Zoo, where the there were quite a few
Yellow-rumped Warblers, as well as the Tennessee Warbler and an Orange-crowned
Warbler.  Margie Joy joined me at the zoo, where we saw all of the Colorado
Nuthatch species coming to the feeders.

We then we over to check the pines in Pueblo City Park, where we were shocked
to find a Warbling Vireo, as well as a male Red-naped Sapsucker.

[cobirds] Christmas Bird Counts

2013-11-18 Thread William H Kaempfer
Christmas Bird Count season is coming up soon-the first counts will be
Saturday, December 14th, and the count period extends until Sunday January 5th.
The count period this year allows us the unusual situation of counts on 4
weekends this year, so there is no excuse for not getting out and counting.

Audubon's CBC website is now up and running. There were 48 counts in Colorado
last year and I hope all of those, and then some, are held again this year.
(Compilers please post the dates of you count if you have yet to do so.)

Last year, Colorado recorded the national high for 17 species and two
additional forms. These high counts were spread over 13 different CBCs.

Gunnison Sage-Grouse CW (CO, Gunnison)
White-tailed Ptarmigan 4 (CO, Rocky Mountain N.P.)
Scaled Quail 187 (CO, Pueblo Reservoir)
Eurasian Collared-Dove 3177 (CO, Fort Collins)
Western Screech-Owl 64 (CO, Grand Junction)
Boreal Owl 2 (CO, Fairplay)
American Three-toed Woodpecker 8 (CO, Grand Mesa)
Northern Shrike 14 (CO, Loveland, and Pueblo Reservoir) and 4 others
Mountain Chickadee 682 (CO, Evergreen-Idaho Springs)
Pygmy Nuthatch 1046 (CO, Evergreen-Idaho Springs)
American Dipper 36 (CO, Aspen) plus 1 other
Townsend's Solitaire 283 (CO, Boulder)
Dark-eyed (White-winged) Junco 65 (CO, Boulder)
Dark-eyed (Cassiar) Junco 18 (CO, Loveland)
Lapland Longspur 22,374 (CO, Flagler)
Black Rosy-Finch 225 (CO, Grand Mesa)
Brown-capped Rosy-Finch 348 (CO, Westcliffe)

This is a pretty neat list with two owl, two "chickens" and Northern Shrike
along with many of our usual mountain species. But I want to single out Tom
Hall, in particular, for counting all of those Eurasian Collared-Doves in Ft.
Collins!

RE: [cobirds] RFI Boulder warblers

2013-11-18 Thread Ira Sanders
When I left at 1:20 only the Parula had been seen and that was 2x in the
warbler tree. It flew out of that tree and across the street about 12:15
and to my knowledge had not been seen again.

Dave Leatherman said that there were aphids in many of the trees to the east
of the warbler tree.

The Tundra Swan is still present at Cottonwood Marsh.

[cobirds] Late Barn Swallow, Boulder County, 11/18

2013-11-18 Thread Ted Floyd
Hello, Birders.
Earlier this morning, Monday, Nov. 18, I saw a tardy Barn Swallow, flying
around the "pond" (it's basically not there anymore, courtesy of the flooding
two months ago) just east of Valmont Presbyterian Church, Boulder County.
Access is from 63rd St. and Valmont Rd. The site is private, but the pastor of
the church says it's okay to view from the west side of the pond.
There are Killdeer out there, too, so I'm guessing there must still be some
good "bugs" at the site. And, hey, if the bugs run out with Thursday's snow,
the birds can always go to the magic aphid tree a few miles to the west...

[cobirds] 72nd Boulder Christmas Bird Count, Sunday 15 December 2013

2013-11-18 Thread William Schmoker
Folks- I'd like to announce the 72nd Boulder CBC, to be held this year on
Sunday 15 December. Participants of all experience and ability welcomed, let
me know if you would like to lead or join a team! We have our count circle
divided into 30+ territories, seeking great coverage in foothills forests and
canyons, urban jungles (winter warblers anyone?), plains, lakes, and riparian
zones. Some territories involve lots of miles (for example, the state champion
x-country-running Such brothers usually put up hiking milage in the high teens)
while others (like the ones I aim for…) are way more casual. We also seek
feeder watchers so if you live within 7.5 miles of 19th & Alpine and have
feeders we could use your count on the 15th!

I've enjoyed hearing some of the history of several Colorado counts. Boulder
ran its first count on 24 December 1909. There were some ons and offs in the
early years but the count has run every year now since 1950. We have tallied
210 species over the years, and have a strong 100+100 run going (100+
participants and 100+ species.)

Anyway, if interested please drop me a line.

Enjoy- Bill Schmoker, Longmont
