[cobirds] Wood Ducks - Jefferson County

2013-12-11 Thread Martha LKJ
Late Monday afternoon, I spotted Wood Ducks in a little pond at the park
across the street from Echter's Greenhouse on Garrison St. in Arvada. I
thought there were 3 or 4 pairs until I studied my pictures and counted at
least 6 pairs. This is only my second sighting, and the first was a pair in
a canal near Kipling and 80th in Arvada. So I was thrilled. They were mixed
in with Mallards, Geese, and Hooded Mergansers.

Thanks for passing this on. The video on Snowy Owls was great and it was great
to see Betty in the video. She was indeed a wonderful caring person.

I was stunned to see my friend Betty Petersen in the first minutes of the
video. Receiving news of her passing in June 2013 greatly saddened me, so it
really warmed my heart to see her being Betty - snapping photos of the
Snowy Owl and showing her sense of wonder. Thank you, Kathy, for sharing the
 video.

Subject: [cobirds] Snowy Owls in the NE

 Greetings -

As many of you are aware, the northeast has been experiencing a Snowy Owl
invasion which borders on mind boggling.

I also subscribe to CTBirds and in the past week there have been a couple of
great posts about the owls on their listserv.

The first is a video shot at Plum Island during the SNOW invasion of
2011/2012. Contrary to popular belief, they have found that the owls are not
starving and not stressed. It is a great video and talks about the owls
 relocated from Logan Airport.

The second is a link to a blog written by Scott Kruitbosch about this year's
invasion. He pulls apart ebird data and presents some pretty interesting
 stats.

 Let's keep our eyes open!

[cobirds] Equalizer Lake/Houts Reservoir, Larimer Co.; Dec. 11 - NO BRANT

2013-12-11 Thread Scott Baron
Hello,

As I suspected the Brant was not present when I walked around Equalizer
Lake this morning. I walked part of Houts Reservoir, too. All water is
frozen because of the extreme cold that has been here for the past week.
Hundreds of Canada and Cackling Geese were in the area but I didn't see
anything else in the flock. Has anyone looked for or seen the Brant after
Dec. 1 when I last saw it?

I saw a male Merlin of the prairie race was perched in a tree at the sw.
corner of Equalizer, which was nice.

[cobirds] Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, Canon City, FreCo

2013-12-11 Thread millerrichj
This morning there was a male Yellow-bellied Sapsucker at Rouse Park in
Canon City. It was in the pines
next to the Dewey St. parking lot on the west side of the park.

Also this morning, there were thirteen Gr. White-fronted Geese in a field
west of Willow St and south of Elm St. in the midst of dozens of
Canada/Cackling Geese. When I revisited here a couple of hours later, they
all were
gone. This group of GWFGs moves around Canon City and were recently seen
at Valco ponds and the Tunnel Dr. Reservoir.

[cobirds] Golden Eagles, one with very full crop in Canon City area

2013-12-11 Thread SeEttaM .
I have seen Golden Eagles on several occasions in the Canon City area
lately. A few days ago I spotted one circling just outside the city limits
then a half hour later found another one with very full crop more than 10
miles away in Fremont County. I have uploaded photos of both on my Birds
and Nature blog http://birdsandnature.blogspot.com/. The one with the
full crop shows the upper chest very distended.

I have gone looking for the Ferruginous Hawk with one eye several times
since I posted about her but only found her again on one occasion. On that
day she was pushed off her perch and out of the area by a Bald Eagle.
