[cobirds] Return of Piping Plovers
Birders, The first Piping Plover of 2014 returned to traditional nesting habitat on Saturday, April12th, four days later than in 2013. Despite adverse migration conditions, it was joined by a second bird today. These birds are well inside an endangered species closure area, and probably aren't visible from any location outside the closure. As usual, I will be willing to help interested birders see these very rare Colorado resident nesting birds. Let me know, and I will try to help you. As expected, the cold, rainy weather grounded some migrant birds today. Four species of swallows swarmed open water on the west end of the reservoir. The prize migrant swallow around here is Violet-green, and conditions like today's would be the time to look, but only Tree, Bank, Northern Rough-winged and Barns were observed today. A Cattle Egret and two Snowy Egrets briefly landed on an island on the west side of the lake. Finally, sandpipers besides Baird's landed, including Least and Semipalmated. Curiously, migrant land bird traps held no grounded land birds. [cobirds] Update on Bald Eagle nest Highland Lake, Weld, CO
As I posted a few of weeks ago, there was a new Bald Eagle nest on the north shore of Highland Lake near Mead, Weld. A pair of eagles had been hanging around for weeks. I observed them in the nest and changing places. There was one almost all the time, hanging out about 50 yards away, chasing off the Red-Tailed Hawks that usually nest in several trees along the north shore. One of the more interesting sights was one of the eagles chasing a hawk off. The hawk was flying as hard as it could and the eagle was right on its tail. Feathers flying, but it was pretty clear that the eagle was more intent on chasing off rather than killing the hawk. As soon as the hawk crossed over the dike on the south side of the lake, the eagle returned to its perch near the nest. Eventually, there must have been a treaty reached because the hawks established a nest several trees to the west of the eagle nest. I last saw the Eagles both on the nest, and hanging out nearby, about a week ago. One of my neighbors to the north said that was about the time they last saw them as well. A few days ago, I observed that a pair of Red-Tailed Hawks are now occupying the nest and the eagles are nowhere to be seen. My question is, What are some different scenarios that would have happened to the eagles to make them leave/abandon their nest? Could the eggs have failed to hatch? Was there too much activity along the inlet ditch east of the nest (they are slowly removing trees and bushes along both the inlet and outlet ditches and pilling them up along the bank to burn later), or just maybe, as the wildlife officer suggested, they are a first year couple and are still trying to figure things out. Obviously, those of us who live on the lake and have been watching the eagles, are disappointed as we realize that this was an unique situation, unlikely to repeat itself again. For while Highland Lake has some good habitat for ducks, geese, and of course, Red-tailed Hawks, it really isn't the best location for a Bald Eagle nest. [cobirds] Littleton, Arapahoe Co Apr 13
A stop at Ketring Lake in the early afternoon during light snow had my first of season SNOWY EGRETS (2), a male and female MOUNTAIN BLUEBIRD (my first in town in Littleton), 3 NOR. ROUGH-WINGED SWALLOWS, 12 BARN SWALLOWS and a LINCOLN'S SPARROW. A trio of SAY'S PHOEBES was intent on hovering low over the water picking off something from the surface (presumably floating frozen insects), interrupting those efforts only to squabble with each other or to rest for a time on a shoreline rock. I was impressed with their prolonged hovering over the lake surface for periods of over a minute without landing, all the while facing into a freezing wind. About 10 min ago an alternate-plumaged COMMON LOON powered north into the snow over St. Mary Church at Prince Street, calling as it passed over. [cobirds] Larimer County gulls
Horseshoe Lake in northeast Loveland is currently a gull hotspot. Late Saturday afternoon, the muddy southeast lobe of the lake hosted: California Gull – 600 adults, many in pairs, some copulating Franklin’s Gull - 80+ pink-breasted adults Ring-billed Gull – 15 or 20, various ages Herring Gull – 6 immatures, all brown first-cycles except for one gray-mantled second-cycle Lesser Black-backed Gull – 4 (2 adults, 1 blackish-mantled second-cycle, 1 brown first-cycle). Viewing is a challenge as birds are distant, and not easily viewed from a single viewing spot. The east end of Engelman Place off of Monroe is the best spot. [cobirds] Masonville (Larimer County) Turkey Vulture Roost update
Happy snowy Sunday! I've been meaning to update the group on the Masonville Post Office turkey vulture roost but have been out of town (getting some birding and ranch work done in the Hill Country of Texas). We spotted the first tuvu on the roost the evening of April 5. We just checked this evening after being gone for a week+ and found 8 birds in the poplars this evening. I used to share data with Alex Cringan re:counts here, arrival dates, etc for many years and wondered if anyone has gotten access to those records he'd kept. We were trying to determine if the individuals here in Masonville had any relationship to those at the Mountain Ave roost in Fort Collins, but never came to any conclusions. I am happy to contact his wife June to see if she has the records, but didn't want to bother her if one of you has already done so. Not sure if you know, but their son Alex Jr. died suddenly last month at the age of 57 and I didn't want to unnecessarily bother her again. She is likely to know where the information is, and would be happy to share it if no one has gotten it yet. He was meticulous in observing that roost for many, many years and kept very detailed records which would be good to have now with the changes occurring. On a related note, we were happy to find more than 6 individual golden-cheeked warblers in a heavily treed, though dry canyon on our ranch property in Bandera County, TX, along with several black-capped vireos in the low lands. It is bone dry down that way - springs and creeks that have run for 100+ year are now in their 3rd year of severe drought. Feel free to contact me offline if you have questions or comments. [cobirds] Boulder County storm birds, Apr. 13th
Hello, Birders. I had a bit of time this snowy Sunday afternoon, Apr. 13, so I made the quick jaunt over to South Teller Lake, Boulder County, where the snow was horizontal out of the north. Hard enough to see the lake, and even harder to see the birds, but there were many of them, including: 6 Wilson's Snipes bunched along the shore 2 Say's Phoebes making like swallows and searching in vain for insects amid the whitecaps 34 Tree Swallows, 3 Violent-green Swallows, 7 Bank Swallows, 6 Barn Swallows, and 18 Cliff Swallows (photo of the Cliff Swallows here: http://tinyurl.com/ndck5jw) 1 American Pipit walking around 3 Vesper Sparrows bopping around on the trail Then I retreated to Greenlee Preserve, ever-birdy. There I found 2 Franklin's Gulls, 2 Yellow-rumped Warblers, 2 Brown-headed Cowbirds, and ducks galore, including 3 Wood Ducks and 9 Blue-winged Teal. (By the way, back on Thursday, April 10th, when the weather was nicer, Greenlee had continuing Bushtits, a territorial Spotted Towhee, a Rubicon Kinglet, and a continuing Say's Phoebe.) Re: [cobirds] YELLOW-THROATED WARBLER -- EL Paso Co. 4/13
COBirders, Thank you for posting this find for me, Brandon. On an afternoon that was more bark than bite at Chico Basin Ranch (fee area), 4 of us found a YELLOW-THROATED WARBLER at the banding station (El Paso County). The warbler was foraging among the Russian olives immediately southeast of the outbuilding that RMBO uses for bird banding, and southwest of the port-o-potties. It stayed in close proximity to 2 Mountain Chickadees and at least 1 Black-capped Chickadee for the 30 minutes we watched. The banding station had very few other birds. A few photos of the YELLOW-THROATED WARBLER are posted on my flickr page: https://www.flickr.com/photos/comtneer/with/13838758194/ Tyler Stuart Colorado Springs On Sun, Apr 13, 2014 at 5:00 PM, Brandon K.
