Re: [cobirds] Gray Vireo in Lamar, CO
The GRAY VIREO continues in the Lamar High School shelter belt. At least one other birder was able to re-find the Zone-tailed Hawk circling over Lamar with Turkey Vultures in the last 1.5 hrs. A Worm-eating Warbler has been there on both May 8th and 9th, and I was there looking for it. While there, I was lucky enough to find a Gray Vireo in about the center of the grove. It was subsequently seen by a number of other birders. I am guessing that photos were obtained. Gray Vireo is a very localized and rare breeding bird on higher mesas in Eastern Las Animas County, but is practically unknown as a migrant elsewhere in Eastern Colorado. [cobirds] Hooded Warbler, Skunk Canyon, Boulder County
My warbler class, which I teach for the Boulder County Nature Association, hit the jackpot today on our first field trip! Quite a few common breeding and migrating birds arrived in the foothills at the end of the week, including Virginia's Warblers, several Orange-crowned Warblers, Yellow-breasted Chats, a Western Tanager, Black-headed Grosbeaks, Blue-gray Gnatcatchers, Green-tailed Towhees, Ruby-crowned Kinglets and an Epidonax sp. without an eye ring that flicked its tail. The highlight of the warbler species was a loudly singing Hooded Warbler almost up to the junction of the Skunk Canyon Trail with the Mesa Trail. We never did see it. I think I inadvertently scared it away when I was trying to play the song softly to the 13 people with me (we were surrounded by sound) and my iPhone blared out the distinctive song of the Hooded. It became silent. I also heard a song, which sounded very much like a Black-throated Gray Warbler, on the mesa to the south of Skunk Canyon. I could be wrong on the species, but it was definitely a warbler. [cobirds] Crow Valley and Lower Latham 5/9
Yesterday, Daren O'Brien and I went to Crow Valley Camprground and made a quick stop at Lower Latham. Crow Valley was still birdy with very little turnover or new arrivals. The birds of interest were Black-and-White Warbler, Ovenbird, Broad-winged Hawk and a nice looking Macgillvray's Warbler. The rest of the migrants( Lincoln Sparrows, yellowthroats, yellow-rumps, gnatcatchers, house wrens, western kingbirds, etc) were in good numbers. Only one vireo(Plumbeous), one Thrush(Swainson's) no tanagers, 2 orioles, and 0 grosbeaks. The number of shorebirds at Lower Latham had a sharp drop since last Sunday. The best bird here was a low flyover from a Sandhill Crane! While birding at Lower Latham a truck approached us while bird along RD 48. We gave them a friendly way but didn't get one in return. He approached my vehichle and looked like he was taking my license plate number and then drove away. [cobirds] Report of RED-FACED WARBLER - Montezuma County
Dennis Garrison posted this at 2:36 pm today on West Slope Bird Network: *I was briefly in the lower Dolores area above Bradfield today. There is a spot there where I have in the past seen Grace's warblers, and I stopped for a minute to look, and saw a red-faced warbler. * *Nothing else I can find in my books even comes close. The markings were so distinct, size was right, actions were right. Had a good look for more than a minute with binocs at 50 feet as it foraged along the roadside in the bare oaks, at which point I dug for my camera, and looked up and it was gone. Spent almost an hour looking for it to no avail.* *Hopefully someone else will see it. Location is about 1.5 miles below the dam. Single large ponderosa on the river side of the road, with a large culvert under the road and a straight ditch about 8 feet deep leading down to the river. There is also a big open field with the remains of a parking area to the south of that tree. Some pondos and a few doug firs with oak understory right there on the uphill side of the road. Google maps gives me coordinates of 37.593794 -108.601795.* *Please, someone find it and tell me I am not really crazy.* --- Jason Beason Paonia - Delta County -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Colorado Birds group. [cobirds] RE: Bluff Lake near Stapleton, Denver County
So -- first off, no rarities, but plenty of spring variety! And yes, at least this morning, it was still spring! Seen: Yellow Warbler, Yellow-rumped Warbler, House Wren and nest, Downy Woodpecker, Northern Flicker, Starling, Barn Swallows, Blue-winged Teal, Cinnamon Teal, American Avocet, Mallard, Gadwall, Western Kingbird, Great Blue Heron, Black-crowned Night-Heron and several sparrows (but I did not get good enough looks for an ID). There both Swainson's Hawks and Red-tailed Hawks at different times flying overhead. There were significant numbers of Starlings, American Robin, Red-winged Blackbird and American Crow in different areas of the park. One other birder reported hearing a Belted Kingfisher, but it was not sighted The only missing species I was hoping for were Bullock's Orioles -- which were plentiful at Cherry Creek State Park earlier this week. There is water in the lake -- pretty decent level after being dry part of last year. The area around Sand Creek has obviously seen flooding and flood damage, but in some ways, this makes it much easier to see. Most of the trail has been repaired -- or repaired enough for use. Turtles were fun to see near shore. Ben Kemena Denver County, Colorado -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Colorado Birds group. [cobirds] The Sewage Ponds of Phillips County and Other Mother's Day Travel Ideas.
(Posted despite popular demand from a 2009 birding essay). *Why does Mother’s Day occur at the peak of Spring Migration?* This must have been the idea of some deranged member of Congress. (Excuse the redundancy). Sure, many if not most of us birders love our moms, and are just fine with honoring them, but why not in February, when one is less likely to miss a warbler? Birders have lamented the inconvenient calendric placement of Mom’s Day ever since John James Audubon dumped Mrs. Audubon one May 13th to go afield. Here is a proposal to celebrate Mother’s Day in style and still have a shot at seeing great birds the very same day. I propose a modest solution - take Mom to Phillips County for a Mother's Day excursion she will forever cherish! Your older brother, Mr. Fancy Pants and your bossy “Big Sis” might have been taking Mom to the Bahamas, Paris or Hawaii, but I'll bet they never were thoughtful enough to guide Mother to such a gem-like destination. Be it Haxtun or Holyoke, the sewage ponds of Phillips County beckon! Make the best of it, take Mom on a grand tour of Phillips County, the jewel of the north-eastern plains, a thrill for her AND a birding opportunity for you. I would consider this gesture generous, not selfish, because let's face it, every Mother's Day until now has not been warbler-centric, but has been all about her! Pack up the “bird-mobile,” dust off your spare pair of bins, head northeast from almost anywhere in our state and after a quick four to twelve hour drive - presto, you're there. Whether over the decades Mom has become a seasoned birder or remains a novice, Phillips County will reveal its avian treasures to the sharp-eyed. As a warm-up to spotting the avifauna, why not start with a meal in the cuisine capital, downtown Holyoke? There snuggled together on a single block are truly savory international houses of fine dining - not only gourmet standard American style, but Chinese, Mexican, Sub, Donut Shop and Convenience Store flavors. Then how about shopping for a Mother’s Day card and some gifts on cosmopolitan Interocean Avenue? The Deaver Hardware Store has a sidewalk display of colorful hanging floral baskets. Or let Mom go inside and have her pick of Mother's Day gifts from the enticing 75% off” rack. She'll be surprised at the selection - items she won’t find at Nordstrom’s, where your sister takes her. And at the Haxtun Super, there are special Mom's Day sales on Skoal and Copenhagen for her everyday needs, Carhartt coveralls in denim, canvas and camo and for her garden, 25 lbs of steer manure for $9.99 (bagged) or for as low as $1.99, bag it yourself. And now let’s go birding! I’d guess that Mom's Phillips County bird list is pretty low. Be sure to have a brand-new notebook, a county checklist and a writing implement. She can't miss Eurasian Collared Doves, Horned Larks are ubiquitous and Swainson's Hawks can be seen without much trouble. Tick ‘em off! If she is squeamish about odiferous emanations from the famed sewage ponds, assure her that the repulsive fragrances are just not going to be a problem, due to their location across the road from the Farfal Brothers' Feed Lot, whose fumes will overpower anything the ponds can throw up at you. And it's not just those little lakes that offer magic. Good migrants can be found along County Road 14 and in the famed migrant traps of Paoli and Amherst. (Check for feeders; some were there in 1992). Next it’s you and Mom strolling arm and arm through the kochia weeds to reach Frenchman’s Creek Wildlife Area. What? It’s bone dry? No ducks! No shorebirds! Oh, well, that’s birding. There’s always a chance to troll the desolate grid of gravel roads northwest of Holyoke for Loggerhead Shrike and kingbirds. That may induce a short nap, which folks Mom’s age will relish. But the excitement must come to an end. As evening falls, and you wend your way home, be patient with your dear Mother. She will want to relive the details of how intense were her labor pains, how numerous were the diapers she changed, and how her hopes and aspirations for your development as a person of character (and wage-earner) were repeatedly dashed, through no fault of her own. But let it all go in one ear and out someplace else while you mentally play back the buoyant songs of the Western Meadowlark, remember the wide-open spaces, feel the high winds and remember the rare ducks floating along - on the sewage ponds of Phillips County. [cobirds] Fountain Creek Spring Count (El Paso); Black-and-White Warbler, Brown Thrasher, etc.
Hello, COBirders, Today 47 birders participated in the annual Fountain Creek Spring Bird Count, recording 79 species. This was a bit lower than species totals from previous spring counts. We also have large shoes to fill with Ken Pals moving to Fort Collins, after leading this count for many years! Rarities were largely in the south of the park, including a Black-and-White Warbler and Brown Thrasher (Mel/Jeanne Goff and team, Area 7/ponds). A Black-throated Gray Warbler joined the day of list in PM (Bob Harnish/Chuck Koehler). Other uncommon or neat-to-find species for this count included Lewis Woodpecker, Bewick's Wren, N. Waterthrush, and Great Egret. The latter hasn't been on count in a decade, and the 4 previous records (since '91) were singles. Interestingly, a minimum of 3 were moving throughout the park today (seen by different groups). *REMINDER: Bear Creek Park Spring Count, Colorado Springs, Saturday, May 17, 7:00-11:00 AM. Please email me with questions about participating (Steve.Getty AT ColoradoCollege.edu). This is a really nice count that regularly has some gems. [cobirds] Barr Lake Birds Today, Adams County
Such a sweet morning for a stroll along Barr Lake. Out on the water there were 90 plus Western Grebe, 19 Eared Grebe, both Common and Red Breasted Mergansers , both Egrets and some big fish splashing. It was nice to see a Barn Owl in nest box, a nesting Swainson's Hawk, a briefly cooperative Gray Flycatcher, 5 Bullock's Orioles, 2 Eastern Kingbirds, 7 Western Kingbirds, a Swainson's Thrush, 2 Orange Crowned Warblers and 2 Warbling Vireo. There were Yellow and Yellow rumped Warblers about and someone had a single Common Yellowthroat. [cobirds] Chatfield
I didn't have much time today, but birded the balloon launch area at Chatfield. Birds seen included: - A singing Cassin's Vireo where Deer Creek crosses under Wadsworth - Wood Duck (m) in Deer Creek by the east bridge - Lots of Yellow-rumped Warblers including several Myrtle - Catbird in the brush along the creek - Several White-crowned Sparrows feeding on dandelion seeds I was late (8am) and only spent about a 1/2 hour there, but it seemed very slow. No orioles, which I found surprising. 1/2 hour at Waterton Audubon was dead. [cobirds] Painted Buntings, Picture Canyon, Baca Co. 5/10/14
Dear birders, After leaving the very discordant Zone-tailed Hawk habitat that is Lamar, the 11 members of the CFO Spring Field Trip booked it south to Picture Canyon in southern Baca County. The petroglyph-clad canyon walls are reminiscent of where one might encounter a Zone-tailed further south. This is where we found the second gem of the day in the form of a singing male PAINTED BUNTING. He was being accompanied by a female while working the small trees and shrubs along the canyon rim just down the trail from the trail head.
