[cobirds] Larimer County Reservoirs 11/22/14
The Black Scoter, White-winged Scoter, and Long-tailed Duck are all still at Douglas Reservoir as of late this morning. Nicole Teel, Fawn Simonds, and I also had very nice views at a SORA in a creek west of the small metal building on the north side of Douglas Reservoir. Nice to find. No sign of any Loons at Annex #8 Tundra Swans still present at Hamilton Reservoir. 7 total this time. RE: [cobirds] Rocky Mtn Arsensal NWR -- Adams County
Hello, Just to start, let me say, no rarities -- just many old friends on a day of changing weather (Saturday). The lake status update at the Rocky Mountain Arsenal NWR: After our early November deep-freeze, Lake Mary, Lake Ladora and the Havana Ponds are completely frozen and ice covered. I did not hike out to the Rod and Gun Ponds -- but would presume that since they are small ponds/lakes, they are frozen over as well. Not much bird-action happening at these ice-covered lakes though I did see deer, prairie dog and coyote. However, there is still significant open water at Lower Derby Lake -- which is visible from 6th Avenue (64th Avenue). This lake is closed to public walking access around the lake, but is easily visible from the paved road. Binoculars or a spotting scope definitely help. Canada Geese (thousands) and Mallards (many) -- and a very vocal group at that. However, as might be expected, there were many others mixed in including American Wigeon, Gadwall, Redhead, Ring-necked Duck, Lesser Scaup, Common Goldeneye, Bufflehead, Hooded Merganser, Common Merganser, Blue-winged Teal, Northern Pintail, Northern Shoveler (scores), Snow Goose (1 stand out among the Canada Geese), Pied-billed Grebe, American Coot (scores) and Ring-billed Gull (scores). What kept it all interesting were the Bald Eagles -- one mature adult and 5 immature adults. As one might imagine, their passes over open water were quite a spectacle. At one point, on the ice-shelf at water's edge, there were 6 Bald Eagles in various stages of maturity including one stunning mature Bald Eagle. At the inlet to Lake Ladora just below Lower Derby Lake, I did see a Belted Kingfisher. Elsewhere at RMANWR, I did see American Robin, Starling, Black-billed Magpie, Red-tailed Hawk and Mourning Dove. I was hoping to see at least a few sparrows or finches -- but none seen today (seems strange -- perhaps our unseasonable cold weather plays a role). Thanks for everyone's great reports -- I'm indebted to everyone here. Ben Kemena Denver, Colorado -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Colorado Birds group. [cobirds] New COBirds.org website: Check out the homepage
Hello, Birders. Sorry, I was off the grid, at least COBirds-wise, last week. Which means I haven't had a chance for a little while to tell you more about all the great content and functionalities of the new COBirds website. Like the homepage iteself! If you haven't gone there yet, please do. Designer Ann Johnson has done a marvelous job of making this site function well both on smartphones and in the old-fashioned medium of computer monitors. The basic concept of the homepage is to navigate you toward useful and timely content, both onsite and offsite. You've heard already about some of the splendid onsite content (convention reports, upcoming events, etc.). But the homepage is also an efficient way to get to offsite content of special interest to Colorado birders. A sampler: 1. CFO headlines. This is what it sounds like--current news for Colorado birders. 2. Colorado County Birding and the Colorado Bird Records Committees sites. These are sorta onsite, sorta offsite. More onsite, inasmuch as you get full access with your COBirds.org password. 3. COBirds (i.e., the listserv, where you are right now), eBird-Colorado, and CFO's group page on Facebook. 4. Birding and field ornithological sites with special relevance to CFO's mission. For example, the Colorado Birding Trail and the Colorado Breeding Bird Atlas. And a whole lot more: a bird ID quiz, a bird checklist for the state, a directory of CFO volunteers, a portal to online content for Colorado Birds, information on grants and scholarships, etc. See for yourself! It's all here: *http://cobirds.org* Ted Floyd Lafayette, Boulder County, Colorado -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Colorado Birds group. [cobirds] Huerfano and Las Animas Cos. Birding
This morning I visited Lake Trinidad SP (Las Animas) and was amazed by the variety of ducks, loons, grebes, etc on the water. The highlights were: Common Loon - 2 Red-throated Loon - 1 Red-necked Grebe - 2 Surf Scoter - 1 White-winged Scoter - 1 Long-tailed Duck - 1 This is the best birding that I've ever experienced at this location by miles. Hunters were present. Yesterday I stopped at Lathrop SP (Huerfano) which was teeming with hundreds of gulls and ducks. The highlights here: Barrow's Goldeneye - 1 out of 100+ Common Goldeneyes. Red-necked Grebe - 2 Long-tailed Duck - 1 Rich Miller Canon City -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Colorado Birds group. [cobirds] Birding in Colorado Springs, Canon City and Pueblo, 11/22
This morning, Todd Deininger, Sue Riffe, Gwen Moore and I set off for the middle of the state to look for several recently reported rarities. We started at Prospect Lake in Colorado Springs (El Paso) where we got up-close and personal with all three scoters (2 Surf) plus Greater Scaup, Red-breasted Merganser and lots of other more expected species. We then went down CO 115 to Penrose (Fremont) and Brush Hollow Reservoir where there were double-digit Killdeer and 3 Canyon Towhees among others. We continued to Tunnel Drive where it was quite windy, but that didn't disturb a flock of Bushtits, a handful of White-crowned Sparrows and a Cooper's Hawk overhead (but no Rufous-crowned Sparrows, alas). In Canon City itself we had a sharp male Williamson's Sapsucker and a Red-naped Sapsucker in Centennial Park and found Juniper Titmouse along Temple Canyon Drive. We then continued to Pueblo Reservoir State Park (Pueblo) where, with Brandon Percival's assistance we had several productive stops (although not always seeing the same birds that Brandon reported earlier today). At West Fishing Road we had at least two Bonaparte's Gulls and Horned Grebes by the dam, but at the south marina we had 1st winter and adult Lesser Black-backed Gulls and a 1st winter Mew Gull, but no Great Black-backed Gull. In addition, the only woodpecker we could find at City Park in Pueblo was a downy. Finally we stopped at Big Johnson (El Paso) on our trip home where we had 2 or 3 Common Loons in the thousands of birds, but we were not able to turn up other recently reported good finds. [cobirds] Larimer County- 11/22
Nick Komar and I spent the whole day birding Larimer County. We started the morning off at Annex Reservoir #8. Like Austin reported earlier today, it was devoid of loons. If anyone is interested, I posted a few photos of the loon from Thursday on my Flickr page here: https://flic.kr/p/qa5q99. From Annex 8 we headed to Cobb Lake where we found 2 Common Loons and a possible Thayer's Gull. The gull was on the darker side and the undersides of the primaries looked too dark for us to comfortably call it a Thayer's. After Cobb Lake we went to Poudre Reservoir #3. Nick mentioned to keep an eye out for black ducks, and I got excited when I spotted a darker Mallard-like duck. It wasn't a black duck, but it was a Mexican(ish) Mallard. I am still not very sure how to determine a pure/pure enough/obvious intergrade, but there was no green in the bird's head and there was not a whole lot of white in the tail. We also had 5 species of geese on the reservoir. We made a quick stop at Douglas Reservoir where we spotted the continuing Black and White-winged Scoters and Long-tailed Duck. We also relocated an interesting gull I found on Thursday, and as I suspected it turned out to be a small first-year Ring-billed Gull. Although we counted over 300 goldeneyes, we could not pick out any Barrow's. Another check of Annex #8 still did not produce the loon from earlier in the week. Our next stop was Timnath Reservoir where the second goldeneye I saw was a male Barrow's and Nick spotted a first-year gull with what looked like fairly uniform gray primaries. The gull flew away, but after we didn't find anything else out of the ordinary we tried to find the gull. It may have stopped at the Wal Mart on Harmony, because we found a first-year Thayer's Gull there along with a nice assortment of ducks and an interesting Herring Gull that showed a paler rump and more white in the tail than the average American Herring Gull. From there we met up with Georgia Doyle at Fossil Creek Reservoir. Although we did not find much of anything out of the ordinary, there was a decent number of birds including almost 50 American White Pelicans and over 500 Common Mergansers. As the daylight was fading we headed south to the northern part of Horseshoe Lake where we found likely the same Thayer's Gull from Wal Mart along with the continuing Mew Gull and 2 Mexican(ish) Mallards. One of the Mallards didn't have as much white in the tail or chestnut in the breast as the other one did. I also got very excited when I saw a dark gull that looked tiny. I was hoping for another species, but it turned out to be a late Franklin's Gull. We ended the day at Lake Loveland where we added our final species of gull for the day with 2 Lesser Black-backed Gulls. Nick also spotted and photographed (maybe poorly in the fading light?) a California Gull that had a noticeably paler back and a whiter head that was possibly from the northern Great Plains population. Overall it was a really fun day of birding highlighted by 26 species of waterfowl and 8 species of gulls.
