[cobirds] Chatfield[Jefferson], Ft Logan,[Denver]

2014-12-13 Thread Tina Jones
On Dec. 11, at Chatfield Reservoir State Park, the Red-necked Grebe was seen
in Jefferson County, near the dam, with Western Grebes. This bird really moves
around the lake to different locations.

On 12/12, at Fort Logan Cemetery I saw 1, immature Greater White-fronted Goose.
The one I saw the week before was an adult. The immature was seen near the
pond at the Cemetery entrance,[which is off of S. Sheridan]. Good luck. These
Geese move back and forth from other sites. This is Denver County.

Good Luck, and have fun everyone on the Christmas counts.

Happy Birding !

[cobirds] Red-necked Grebe/Larimer

2014-12-13 Thread Rachel Hopper
COBirders,

The Red-necked Grebe at Hamilton Reservoir (Rawhide Power Plant) that I
found last week is still present this afternoon hanging out with a few
Western Grebes. The lone injured pelican is still there and a single
Double-crested Cormorant remains.

[cobirds] Harris's sparrows at Chatfield Arb, Jefferson County

2014-12-13 Thread Johnson, Candice E., MD.
Birding today at Chatfield Arboretum with Lynn Wilcoxson's DFO group we saw 3
Harris's sparrows, 1 adult and 2 first-winter birds. They were close together
low to the ground in a bush near the north end outlet of the western-most
pond, right near the trail. They cooperated for 10 minutes, then flew up into a
tree above us in a beautiful display.

[cobirds] Costa's HB - YES

2014-12-13 Thread sheflew
Cobirds,

The female Costa's HB came to the feeder this evening at 3:02 and finally at
3:50 in sleety rain.

The apple tree that she has been perching in lost most of its leaves last
night. So, she is perching in a spruce tree just across the fence.

With the cold snap today, the Costa's has been irregular at the feeder.

Hope everyone has a chance to participate in one or more CBC's starting
tomorrow!

[cobirds] Found: Yellow-Billed Loon (Chatfield State Park - Jefferson County)

2014-12-13 Thread Joey Kellner
At 4:07pm I found a YELLOW-BILLED LOON on Chatfield Reservoir. The bird was
seen between the Massey Draw parking lot and the Swim Beach parking lot.
Presumably this is the same Yellow-billed Loon as was previously reported at
Boyd Lake. I was not able to go up and see the Boyd Lake bird, but here is
a description of the Chatfield bird:

Large, block-headed loon with large, yellow bill; upturned distal half of
the lower mandible. Head a nice light tan-brown (not the dark
chocolate-brown of a Common Loon). Pale face with small eye and larger
circular ear spot behind the eye. Clear indentations between the pale
front of the neck and throat and the tan-brown of the back of the neck.
Back feathers broadly edged in buff creating a nice barred appearance to the
back indicating this to be an 1st year bird.

The bird was actively diving during the 8 minutes that I observed it.

Also, seen was the continuing RED-NECKED GREBE best seen from the Lake View
parking area (turn at the Campground Registration office and continue to the
parking lot at the end).

[cobirds] Big Johnson Res, el Paso Co, Saturday

2014-12-13 Thread Steve Brown
Hi COBirders,

I stopped by some of the open-water spots around Colo Spgs on a warm and calm
day today. Big Johnson was 100% open, but the birds were WAY out there. Best
birds (for me) were the previously mentioned White-winged Scoters (near the
dam, in the corner), a female LONG-TAILED DUCK, Clark's and Western Grebes,
Canvasback, and lots of Bufflehead, Hooded Mergansers, and Com Goldeneye. Near
the dam also were an adult Bald Eagle, and a male N Harrier.
(Lots of white-faced geese, too, many with what appeared to be tiny bills.)

Guess we'll see what transpires after the front arrives tonight.
Good birding,
Steve Brown

[cobirds] Sterling (Logan) CBC prep work

2014-12-13 Thread William H Kaempfer
Gwen Moore and I spend the day in the Sterling area scouting for the CBC coming
up on Tuesday, December 16th. Even though Sterling was the coldest spot in the
state today (outside of Leadville) the birds were great.

We started off heading up CR 37, the road that one takes to get to the State
Welcome Center right off I-76. This road follows the S. Platte to the NE for 7
or 8 miles until it turns and crosses the river. Right in the area of the
bridge over the Platte, birds were plentiful and active in an early morning
dense fog that didn't burn off until early afternoon. We had a Harris's
Sparrow and a Red-bellied Woodpecker as highlights in this spot (CR 40 east of
US 138).

Next was the tiny village of Pedroni at CR 43 and 48. Once again birds were
super-active in the morning's cold fog-best were some Cedar Waxwings and
Brewers Blackbirds along with a couple of Ring-necked Pheasants. We continued
to North Sterling State Park where the mostly open (98%) reservoir contributed
to the fog to the extent that we could not see more than 10 feet off-shore at
first. As a result not many birds seen other than a flushed Great-horned Owl.
We made our way to the southernmost campground in the park, and I have to tell
tales on Gwen, the cold and fog were making it hard to get out of the car.

Come on, I said, Or you'll miss the Snow Buntings. I think to prove me
wrong, Gwen played a Snow Bunting call notes and immediately we heard responses
from them overhead in the fog. We also had the similar but clearly different
(drier, more rattle-like and less musical) calls of Lapland Longspurs and
Horned Larks. Our first geese of the day showed up in the arms of a group of
hunters returning from their blinds-well at least it showed us that there were
some geese around. Slowly the ice-fog began to lift and we discovered a group
of gulls on one of the few ice shelves on the edges of the reservoir. The
first group had just Herring and Ring-Billed Gulls, but a second throng at the
end of the park's west entrance road also had an adult Thayer's and a
Bonaparte's-both extremely good finds for Logan County in December.

Later in the day, the fog had totally dissipated and we were able to add to our
totals including four American White Pelicans (our only flagged species for
the day), Double-crested Cormorant and Western Grebe. On our way back to the
metro area we stopped at Prewitt-the number of birds there was overwhelming,
but nothing in terms of new species other than a small flock of Great-tailed
Grackles. All told on the day, we found 54 species 53 of which were in the
Sterling CBC circle.

[cobirds] Barr Lake - Adams CO

2014-12-13 Thread Ira Sanders
Birders,
Barr Lake is being refilled by the irrigation company that owns the water
there. Last month the lake was at drought levels as the irrigation company
worked on some gates in the dam. It is now rising quickly as the work on
the gates is finished.
Today there were 5000 geese there (estimate and I'm probably quite low)
which were mostly Canada and Cackling but included several hundred Snow
Geese, Ross's Geese (incl 1 Blue morph Ross's) and at least 6 Greater
White-fronted Geese. There were 1,000's of Common Merganser, a handful of
Canvasback and other assorted ducks. Also 15 Bald Eagles and the dark
morph Rough-legged Hawk has returned for a 5th year.
