[cobirds] Mourning Warbler, Lamar Community College Woods (Prowers County)

2015-05-11 Thread Cheryl Teuton
This morning at about 8:30 we ran into Dotti Russell in the woods behind
Lamar Community College, where she said that she thought she had seen A
Mourning Warbler near the north end. Dotti was right! The bird was nearer
to the north end, mostly skulking around in the wet scrubby undergrowth.
Jane Stulp, Dan and I were all able to get diagnostic views of the bird, but
full views were to scarce to come by, and photos couldn't be obtained. The
bird spent most of its' time associating with a loose flock that included
Yellow Warblers and Common Yellowthroats. Thanks, Dotti!

The Great Crested Flycatcher previously reported by Brandon Percival et. al.
was whooping it up in the south end of the woods, calling and eating slow
moving bugs in the snow dusted environs.

In the afternoon at the Meredith Feedlot ponds (Crowley county), 4 Dunlins
in breeding plumage were present, as well as Stilt Sandpipers, Red-necked
Phalaropes, and a few other expected migratory shorebirds, as well as a
handful of Franklin's Gulls.

I have had two male tree swallows at my best box for about three weeks now.

Does anyone have input on this situation?

[cobirds] RMBO Chatfield Banding, 5/11/15

2015-05-11 Thread meredith
It was nice to have the sun out! Lots of water - big puddles on the trail
out to the river area, and the net down by the Water Board's fishing pond
had to be removed because the lake has expanded. Spent lots of time
clipping back branches that had bent over into net lanes. Still not
catching a lot of birds - it was pretty cold early, then we had a little
burst of activity, then quiet. Banded 9, plus caught 2 Yellow Warblers
banded in previous years:

Dusky Flycatcher 2 (FOS)
Orange-crowned Warbler 3
Yellow Warbler 2, 1 banded in 2012 and 1 in 2013
Yellow-breasted Chat 1
Green-tailed Towhee 1
Spotted Towhee 1
Mountain White-crowned Sparrow 1

We will be open every day, weather permitting, for the balance of May!

Hi, Cobirders.

Like others we are experiencing a lot of activity in our yard today.

This morning we had Black-headed Grosbeak. This afternoon we have two Lazuli
Buntings, a White-crowned Sparrow, a Chipping Sparrow, and a Green-tailed
Towhee. Add that to our resident WW Doves and a record number of American
Goldfinches, it is getting to be a great spring.

[cobirds] Citizens Science Project – Mourning Warbler Song Mapper

2015-05-11 Thread Jay Pitocchelli
Citizens Science Project – Mourning Warbler Song Mapper

I am posting an opportunity to participate in a Citizens Science Project that
involves recording migrating Mourning Warbler songs. I am trying to determine
the nature of migratory pathways taken by different populations of Mourning
Warbler males during their spring migration using the signatures of their
songs. The pattern of geographic variation in song on the breeding range is
well known. However, we do not know how members of these different song
populations migrate towards their respective breeding areas. I plan on
collecting your recordings and plotting them on a map of North America to
determine where birds with different song types (regiolects) separate from each
other during spring migration.

All you need is a Smartphone and a singing Mourning Warbler. You can send the
recordings to my e-mail address (jpito...@anselm.edu). The web page link below
describes the project and how to make recordings on your Smartphone in more
detail.

http://www.anselm.edu/homepage/jpitocch/ornithology/MOWAmapper/MOWASongmapper.html

I would really appreciate your help and contributions to this Citizens Science
Project.

Hey guys!
Hope everyone is drying out and getting some much needed sunshine! I have had
one Green-tailed Towhee under my feeders since Saturday. Skiddish guy but I've
gotten some great pics. I've also had another White-crowned Sparrow join his
buddy from Friday making a total of two WCSP. Wonder if and when they'll ever
migrate or if I get to enjoy them all summer. I have many House Finches and as
of yesterday have two fledglings following mom and dad around but not
attempting to feed from my thistle sock. My Broad-tailed Hummingbirds have also
ramped up quite a bit with 2 males guarding the feeder from their respective
posts. I did have a juvenile male Black-headed Grosbeak fly in early Sunday
morning but haven't seen him since. Have a great week everybirdy! ;-)

[cobirds] Pueblo & El Paso counties, May 9-10

2015-05-11 Thread Ted Floyd
Hello, Birders.

Lots of great birds were found during the inaugural Pikes Peak Birding &
Nature Festival, held this past Friday-Sunday, May 8-10. And extraordinary
weather; at one point on Saturday, Colorado Springs was simultaneously
under five different National Weather Service warnings! I was on the
Saturday, May 9 field trip to Pueblo County, and the Sunday, May 10 field
trip to Fountain Creek Regional Park. Highlights:

Rock Canyon, below Pueblo Reservoir, Pueblo County, May 9. *red-headed
woodpecker; gray flycatcher; black-and-white warbler.*

Pueblo City Park, Pueblo County, May 9. 2 *green herons.*

Fountain Creek Regional Park, El Paso County, May 10. 12 species of
warblers, including *northern waterthrush, Tennessee warbler,
black-throated blue warbler,* and *palm warbler; broad-winged hawk* and
*peregrine
falcon; least flycatcher* and gray flycatcher; *eastern bluebird;* and
*rose-breasted
grosbeak.*

On the drive back to Boulder County Sunday afternoon, I stopped by
Sondermann Park, El Paso County, where Allan Burns and I saw a broad-winged
hawk and 2 gray flycatchers.

Oh, and I heard a northern waterthrush this sunny (what! sun? what's that?)
Monday morning, May 11, at Greenlee Preserve, Boulder County.

[cobirds] Broad-winged Hawks, Loveland, Larimer

2015-05-11 Thread Elaine Coley

Hi All,
Have had Broad-winged Hawks now and then for several years overhead here. However, yesterday around 1 p.m. had 2 soaring above (not going from point A to point B).They both are dark morph adults.  Today had 2 soaring above and one that looked like a juvenile (maybe 1st year) perched in a tree near the wetlands back of my house underneath the soaring adults at 8:30 a.m.
This may not be of interest, but after reading my CO Breeding Bird Atlas it looks like they haven't been confirmed as breeding here of late. So I'm posting in case it is of interest.  They can probably best be seen around Marker No. 3 on the Loveland Big Thompson River trail, west of Taft.  The underpass under Taft is closed due to high water.
If further info. is  needed, feel free to call  970-635-9095.

[cobirds] Barn Owls

2015-05-11 Thread scott

Hi all,

We are looking for buildings to place Barn Owl nest boxes on. At the
moment we (members of CARRI). The Colorado Avian Research and
Rehabilitation Institute in Estes Park, have placed 10 nest boxes for
Barn Owls, with great success. We have 6 of the 10 boxes occupied with
families of Barn Owls

At this time we would like the boxes to be placed between Longmont and
Fort Collins, just so we can have CARRI volunteers check them with out
having to travel too far. As this project grows we will, hopefully have
nest boxes all over the state.

At this time, we have two boxes that need to be placed. You may think
that this is a bit late for Barn Owls to nest, but it is not. Last year
we had two families raise young starting in June.

If you look at the CARRI webiste www.carriep.org/our-research/ and
scroll down to the Barn Owl photos, you will see photos of the type of
habitat that Barn Owls are using in Northern Colorado.

We are also interested in areas that would have WiFi access so we can
place live cameras on the nest boxes.

If you have questions or think you know of areas where the nest boxes
could be placed, e-mail me.

Thank You,
Scott Rashid
Director of CARRI
Estes Park
