[cobirds] Osprey with big snake

2015-07-19 Thread David Suddjian
A week ago (7/12) I saw two *Ospreys* flying and perching at the tall light
standards around the ball fields of the campus of St. Mary Church in
Littleton off South Prince St. That was the first I'd seen of that species
at that site, though the South Platte is not far off. Then this evening
(7/19) two Osprey were again in the same spot, and one was flying around
with a big 3+ foot-long snake dangling from its talons. Not the typical
Osprey fare.

[cobirds] CFO August Field Trips

2015-07-19 Thread William H Kaempfer
Next month CFO will sponsor two field trips to northeast Colorado and places
are available to enjoy either one.

On Saturday August 22, we will travel to Riverside Reservoir in Weld County.
Riverside, one of the Big Six reservoirs along the South Platte River as it
heads northeast toward Nebraska, is privately owned and generally closed to the
public. However, CFO has obtained access for a group on August 22nd.
Riverside is typically one of the first reservoirs to be drawn down in late
summer, so even when other spots are still filled to the brim with no shorebird
habitat, this spot can be hopping! Plus there is some excellent riparian
habitat below the Riverside dam that will host interesting migrants at this
time of year. The trip will depart at 6:00 a.m. from the park and ride at US
287 and Niwot Road in Boulder County south of Longmont and return by 6:00 p.m.
If you would like to join this CFO trip, please contact Bill Kaempfer
(kaemp...@colorado.edu) to reserve a spot.

Last year's CFO convention in Sterling was hugely successful for birders
seeking shorebirds, migrants and rarities of the eastern Colorado plains. This
year we are repeating the experience with an overnight trip to Sterling on
August 29th and 30th. Bill Kaempfer and John Vanderpoel will lead this trip
visiting spots like Jackson, Prewitt, North Sterling and Jumbo Reservoirs as
well as Red Lion and Tamarack State Wildlife Areas. Expect 120 to 130
shorebirds, raptors, sparrow, gulls, terns and eastern migrants over the two
days. The trip is limited to 12 people, so please contact Bill Kaempfer at
kaemp...@colorado.edu for more information and to
reserve a spot.

[cobirds] Cuckoos Prewitt Inlet Canal (Washington Co)

2015-07-19 Thread 'Dan Stringer' via Colorado Birds
After seeing reported Yellow-billed Cuckoos at Prewitt Reservoir Inlet
Canal (Washington Co) by Steve Mlodinow on 7-06, today 7-19 was the first
chance I had to go out there for my current nemesis bird. Arrived at 6:30
a.m, greeted by large flocks of mosquitos, the first Cuckoo I saw and
photographed was actually Black-billed Cuckoo which was a stunner. After
this sighting I saw four Yellow-billed Cuckoos, a really good morning that
made the long drive worthwhile. They weren't in the thicker deciduous stuff
near the canal where I searched extensively, but in the bushes/trees closer
to the dirt road, where the sun had just hit and the insects were more
active.

[cobirds] Wood Thrush and Eastern Wood-Pewee, Logan County

2015-07-19 Thread 'Steven Mlodinow' via Colorado Birds
This AM, before sunrise, David Dowell, Chris Rurik and I started walking w from
hwy 55 (=385?). Not far from the road we heard a Wood Thrush off towards the
river. It sang for 5+ minutes. Then, about 300-400 yards w of the hwy, along
the road, we heard and saw an Eastern Wood-Pewee (recorded as well). It seemed
pegged to a relatively small area on both sides of the road. It also was
hanging out with a silent pewee that looked much like a Western and fed two
young!!!

At the pond near the maintenance/ranger's station (well e of 55), we had one of
the Green Herons seen yesterday and a likely migrant Least Flycatcher. Many
Field Sparrows (5) were heard here but not elsewhere at Tamarack

Other highlights include a RB Grosbeak (female) near the E Wood Pewee and a
eastern YB Chat near the pond. Plenty of Bells Vireos are still singing in Wood
Thrush/Pewee area.

Note that we had nearly 30 singing towhees. Of those that we could track down
(about 10) -- ALL WERE HYBRIDS (eastern x spotted)

At Red Lion there were 14 shorebird species, tho no SB Dowitcher. A goodly
variety of dabblers as well. Jumbo Res was mostly a yawn.

[cobirds] Royal Tern? Not today

2015-07-19 Thread Duane Nelson

Birders,

Sorry to report that multiple observers missed the Royal Tern at John
Martin Reservoir (Bent County) today, after it was unmissable all day
yesterday. Our consolation was a Least Tern in /portlandica/ plumage on
the same island frequented yesterday by the Royal Tern. This was the
first Least Tern I've seen in SE Colorado since June. Many tern species
don't breed until several years old, and young birds largely remain on
the wintering grounds until adult, holding distinctive immature plumage
not normally seen on the breeding grounds. These are collectively called
/p//ortlandica /terns. I usually see one in Colorado every year or so.
To me, it signals hope for the future.

[cobirds] White-faced Ibis at Walden Reservoir, Jackson Co.

2015-07-19 Thread Charles Hundertmark
The evening of July 16, Paul Slingsby and I conducted an evening flight
line count of White-faced Ibis flying into a nesting colony area (willow
island and large island) on Walden Reservoir. Young birds were heard at the
willow island. Here is the report:

http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S24298723

This is the second year that a large number of ibis have nested at Walden
Reservoir. It is possible that some of the birds are Glossy Ibis. Doug
Faulkner documented nesting Glossy Ibis at one of the nearby Wyoming
refuges several years ago. So far, however, all of the ibises we have been
able to identify to species have been White-faced.

The ibis can be inconspicuous during the day when most are out feeding.
They can best be seen from the east or southeast edge of the reservoir.
When good views can be obtained, it is worth checking for Glossy Ibis.
