[cobirds] Whimbrel @ Bebee Draw; Weld

2016-05-02 Thread tocalytic
I had a quick look along CR 48 south of Lower Latham Res on the Bebee draw area
this afternoon.
Highlight was 25 Whimbrel at the far edge of the big pond south of the road.

Willets, yellowlegs, Wilsons Phalaropes, a dowitcher, some ibis and the usual
avocets and stilts were present.

Cheers,

Years ago at Mueller State Park (El Paso County), a Dusky Grouse kept
running up to a friend of mine and jumping up and down. It would retreat
and then come back again, and jump up and down.
Oddly, it ignored the other 3 of us.

Barr Lake State Park - From the Visitor's Center bridge to the Pioneer Trail

I went to Barr in the afternoon just to get out of the house on such a
beautiful day. There were a few migrants such as Hermit Thrush,
Orange-crowned Warbler, and Horned Grebe. My favorite for the day was a
White-crowned Sparrow staying tantalizingly far enough in front of me on
the path to avoid any classic photos. Sometimes, you just have to applaud
their unwillingness to interact with humans.

[cobirds] Ruby-throated Hummingbird at Lamar Community College

2016-05-02 Thread Duane Nelson

Birders,

I observed a male Ruby-throated Hummingbird actively flycatching in the
north end of the Lamar Community College woods during my one hour visit
late this morning. It was just south of the concrete bench. Also in this
area -- a White-throated Sparrow. Farther south in the grove, I had a
Broad-winged Hawk.

I hope the hummingbird stays and delights many birders that will be in
Lamar for the CFO Convention, which starts Thursday.

I got to witness a spectacular interaction between two Cedar Waxwings
there today. They sat next to each other on a branch, and passed a green
berry between each other at least 10 times, with neither bird eating the
berry. This must be a courtship behavior.

2016-05-02 Thread Jim Nelson
I thought I had filed my last report earlier today, but on our drive out of
Estes Park this morning we spotted a Double-crested Cormorant as we drove
across the causeway at Lake Estes. Checking eBird as best I can on my iPhone,
it appears this is the first reported up in Estes this year. Sitting here at
DIA, I fully expect this will be my last posting for this trip.
Enjoy the rest of Spring.

FW: [cobirds] El Paso County Birds today

2016-05-02 Thread Jeff J Jones
Oops. I may be the only one to see 7 species of swallow in a single day in
Colorado – IF it were true. Typo! That should have read as “6 species”, which
is what I did list in the complete list at the bottom of my email. Thanks for
catching that folks.

Highlights were:

* 3 Great Horned Owl nests with young in or nearby each of them

* Bonaparte’s Gull (Big J)

* Swainson’s Hawks copulating on fence post; 3 different morphs of
Swainson’s Hawks seen. Dark chocolate, rufous, and standard.

* 7 species of swallow all in one county in Colorado on same day. Not
bad.

* Cassin’s Kingbird out on Squirrel Creek Rd.

[cobirds] I forgot my Chipping Sparrows!

2016-05-02 Thread Kat Bradley-Bennett
I forgot to mention that I had two very rare visitors to my yard yesterday, a
couple of Chipping Sparrows. I frequently have American Tree Sparrow, but I
have only seen Chippies two other times in the 13 years I've lived here. They
stopped by for a quick snack and were gone.

[cobirds] Longmont Greenway birds and update on owl nest

2016-05-02 Thread Kat Bradley-Bennett
I took a walk around Golden Ponds and through Rogers Grove to Boston Avenue
yesterday. There was Yellow Rump fallout between the two westernmost ponds.
League estimated about a hundred males with a few immature is mixed in, moving
northwards and feeding along the St. Vrain.

Also at the ponds: 1 Common Yellowthroat make and possible female, 3 Belted
Kingfishers in an epic territorial display, and two pair of Blue Wing Teal
mixed in with numerous Mallards.

Roger's Grove was full of American Robins and we headed over to Boston Avenue
to take a look at the osprey nest at the Boulder County Fairgrounds. While
watching the Osprey, we heard a Wood dDuck. Sure enough, a pair of Wood Ducks
was moving in and out of the cat tails in the pond just east of the Osprey
nest. Also in that pond was a female Common Merganser.

As of yesterday afternoon, there was only one Great Horned owlet left in the
nest at 75th and Nelson west of Longmont. The other two are in the branches and
difficult to find now.

Re: [cobirds] Development in Sensitive Bird Areas in Fountain Creek Regional Park (FCRP), El Paso County

2016-05-02 Thread SeEttaM .
For those of us from outside of Colorado Springs it is a good idea to
mention, if at all applicable, that when you visit Fountain Creek Regional
Park for birding you spend money in El Paso County (ie gas, food,
shopping). That is the only reason they will care about our input as we
are not voters/citizens there.
