Re: [cobirds] CFO announces 2018 Convention Headquarters

2017-11-17 Thread Gloria Nikolai
Hello all,

If you are planning to stay at the Best Western, they expect to sell out at
that time of year, so it would be best to book your room as early as possible.
Also, when you ask for the special rate, it is listed under "COLORADO
BIRDWATCHERS" not CFO. Giving them that information will make it much easier
for them to find the special rates when you call. The discount for CFO is $20
per night on the two double bed rooms.

Happy birding,

Subject: [cobirds] CFO announces 2018 Convention Headquarters

CoBirders,

CFO has chosen the Best Western Plus Plaza Hotel in Longmont, Colorado, as its
2018 Convention Headquarters. The hotel is easy to access, has quality rooms
with special rates for CFO convention participants, has numerous restaurants on
the premises or close by, has the capacity to handle convention events, and its
central location and ample parking couldn’t be better for launching field trips
in all directions.

Some details:

Best Western Plus Plaza Hotel
1900 Ken Platt Blvd.
Longmont, CO
303-776-2000

Special rates for one King Bed, or two Double Bed, rooms, both types of rooms
also include a sofa bed, refrigerator, and coffee maker with unlimited coffee,
free wifi, and other amenities. The special rates are good for the nights of
May 17-20, but you must identify yourself as a CFO convention participant to
get the discounted rates.

For more information about the hotel, see

Happy birding,

[cobirds] Southern Louisiana October 2017

2017-11-17 Thread 'Steven Mlodinow' via Colorado Birds
Greetings All

If anyone is interested, photos from my 10 day or so trip to southern Louisiana
late this October are at
https://www.flickr.com/photos/36088296@N08/sets/72157666457208999

Highlights of visit, as far as rarities, were Thayer's Gull, Great Black-backed
Gull (I know, everywhere it's gulls, gulls, gulls), White-tailed Hawk (sorry,
no photos), Say's Phoebe.

It is interesting to encounter multiple Cave Swallows, Scissor-tailed
Flycatchers, Swainson's Hawks, Vermilion Flycatchers, Bronzed Cowbirds, with
nary a reaction from local birders. My guess is that a visit 25 years ago with
these birds would have been met with awe.

[cobirds] Basemar Varied Thrush and Black-throated Blue Warbler

2017-11-17 Thread Pablo Quezada
Seen today around 4:30 by myself and many others in creek south of the
Basemar shopping complex. A huge thanks to Topi from Boulder Audubon's Teen
Naturalist Program for originally spotting and identifying the Varied
Thrush. Thanks to Topi and many other young birders involved in the Boulder
Audubon program, including myself, as well as many other young birder
programs, our future ornithological society has a chance to really
influence new generations to keep this important and entertaining field of
study a big part of the biological community.

[cobirds] stray birds

2017-11-17 Thread wwillem

The recent sightings of the varied thrush and black-throated blue warbler
behind the Base-Mar Center in Boulder raised a few questions for me. I am
new to this list so my apologies if these questions are not appropriate for
this forum.

I am curious about research that has examined spatial patterns of stray
birds and their characteristics (e.g., relative to their numbers, life
stage, sex, species, habitat) and as well as possible changes in historical
patterns owing to human-caused factors. I’ll be grateful for references to
pertinent studies.

[cobirds] Black-throated Blue Warbler /Varied Thrush Boulder

2017-11-17 Thread Kevin DeBoer
Spent a couple hours this morning trying to put together a good bird list for
goodwill.

The BLACK-THROATED BLUE WARBLER was around all morning. I first saw it before 7
east of the east bridge and it slowly moved west and was near the west bridge
by 830.

The VARIED THRUSH was not refound during my time there. I searched the
neighborhood west of Broadway briefly but got overwhelmed by the amount of
habitat on a work day. There were a number of Robins and Solitaires moving
around in that area in the earlier part of the morning so I was hopeful but was
never able to pull it out from the crowd. For anyone else heading that
direction today, I'd recommend concentrating efforts on that neighborhood if
not found in previously reported area.

Good luck!

[cobirds] Re: basemar trap

2017-11-17 Thread PH Stoltz

I had no luck finding the BTBW this morning around 8:30am. I looked all
along the trap for about 20 minutes from the Broadway bridge to 28th St
underpass. One other birder was looking as well. We both lamented that
we're probably a day or two too late.

Lots of birds, though! A couple Spotted Towhees and a Townsend's Solitaire
were the highlights (those were further northeast, closer to High Peaks
Elementary School). Also saw (and heard...making lots of noise) a Belted
Kingfisher at the ponds on East Boulder research campus.

Happy Friday, all.
