We just had an immature male broad-tailed at our feeder at 4:50 pm. The last one we saw before this was two days ago. We will be leaving the feeder out for a couple more weeks probably, bringing it in only when it's freezing. We are still experiencing slow and sparrow-y days here in Grand Junction, with 13 new birds and 8 recaptures. Fortunately today's birds included two new species for the season - a Hermit Thrush and an Oregon Junco. White-crowned Sparrow (Mountain) 2 new 1 recapture White-crowned Sparrow (Gambel's) 8 new 5 recapture Juniper Titmouse 1 recapture Song Sparrow 1 Bushtit 1 recapture Hermit Thrush 1 (FOS) Oregon Junco 1 (FOS) Visitors are welcome at the banding station - we start getting birds at around 7:45 and close around 11:30, weather permitting. Banding goes until this Friday the 11th. A front that is expected to move through on Wed/Thurs may interfere with banding on those days. School groups arrive at around 9:30, so if you would like to visit it's best to arrive before then! A great fall day, which we shared with the Tuesday Birders! We banded 66 new birds, with lots of the usual late fall species plus a rarity and a super-rarity - A White-throated Sparrow and (ta-dah!) a PROTHONOTARY WARBLER (the 3rd in 31 years). Here's the breakdown: Dusky Flycatcher 1 Ruby-crowned Kinglet 7 Hermit Thrush 3 Prothonotary Warbler 1 Orange-crowned Warbler 12 Yellow-rumped Warbler, Myrtle 4 Yellow-rumped Warbler, Audubon's 8 Spotted Towhee 2 Chipping Sparrow 2 Song Sparrow 1 Lincoln's Sparrow 2 White-throated Sparrow 1 White-crowned Sparrow, Gambel's 5 Dark-eyed Junco, Slate-colored 1 Dark-eyed Junco, Oregon 6 Dark-eyed Junco, Pink-sided 10 Tomorrow, the high-tech folks from DMNS will be out producing Scientists in Action - Garth Spellman and I will be talking about bird banding and conservation directly to over 1200 students in schools throughout Colorado (plus Texas, Indiana, Michigan and Alaska!) This is our last week, plus a storm is forecast for Thursday and very cold weather for Friday. The earliest we will open nets is 7:40. We are closing nets most days at 11:40. I guess I'll see you and raise you one! Yesterday we had one female broad-tail, today we have two. Both are only visiting flowering plants in the yard, neither has been to the feeder, at least not that I've seen. And of course, if they get within eyesight range, they chase each other mercilessly.
