[cobirds] Dinosaur Ridge probable big day: unofficial

2020-03-28 Thread David Gulbenkian
Saw 21 hawks from 10:30-noon (9:30-11:00 MST), of which probably no more
than 4 would have been the local Red-tails. The first bird I saw appeared
to be
a Ferruginous, but he was already getting far off to the north when I
spotted him.
He was followed immediately by 5 accipiters and a couple of falcons
in less than 20 minutes, flying at high speed just west of the ridge, in
spite of a
vicious north or north-west wind. For some reason, I didn't spot any of
them
until they were already going by.
After that, just Red-tails, almost incandescent white because of the
reflection off
the snow. They were still coming when I left, but cruising more normally
and
without the spectacular illumination from below.
I am not one of the official observers, and I was not at the official
observation site,
but was about a mile south of that on the ridge.

The easiest way to find Dunes Reservoir is to go to the eBird hotspot
map and enter "Dunes Reservoir". That will give you a map and a history
of species, high counts, etc, seen there since the new hotspot was set up
about 2 weeks ago,
thanks to a suggestion from Adam Veseley.

2020-03-28 Thread 'Allison Hilf' via Colorado Birds
Hi all,

The location of the Mew Gull in Adams County at Dunes Reservoir has been a bit
confusing, as it doesn’t show up on a Google search on their map.

Adam Vesely kindly send me directions:

Dunes Reservoir is northwest of the intersection of E. 112th Ave. and Highway
85. There's a small parking lot near the southwest corner of the reservoir
located in the neighborhood.

This will be updated on tomorrow’s RBA, but hope it helps those wanting to
search for it today.

2020-03-28 Thread Caleb A
Oh, the Blue Jays have fooled me before: heard one imitating a Red-tailed
Hawk really well, and it managed to frighten off an incoming Bald Eagle. It
was confusing, because there actually *was* a Red-tailed Hawk nearby, but
it was not the bird that was vocalizing.
I think that European Starlings are more tricky--yesterday I heard one give
nearly perfect imitations of at least eight or nine species within ten
minutes.
Stay safe, all! This season will pass the sooner we comply
