[cobirds] Hairy Woodpecker at Lowell Ponds area, Adams Cnty.

2020-05-23 Thread Robert Canter
Hi CoBirders
I saw a female Hairy Woodpecker the former Lowell Ponds wildlife area this
morning, May 23. Wings were almost all black with only tiny white spots
along outside primaries. The last Hairy i saw in this area was during the
winter of 2014.

[cobirds] Common Nighthawk--Denver

2020-05-23 Thread Robert Righter
Hi

Probably not that unusual of a sighting, but what could be unusual was that it
was resting on a small bare branch, forty to fifty feet up in a dense spruce
tree in our backyard. Makes one wonder how often does this happen and if so
could there be more Common Nighthawks migrating through urban Denver than we
estimate?

[cobirds] Centennial SWA. Weld County

Greetings All
Know that Centennial - one of the finest accesses to the Platte I the CO Plains
is closed to non Turkey hunters until end of turkey season and then closed to
all - fine $200. Insult to injury given the new access fee. For decades
hunters and fisher-folks have funded these areas. Now that we are paying,
without consuming, we should write our state representatives demanding play for
our pay

2020-05-23 Thread elena
Is that true even if we have bought a fishing license and the other pass (as
well as the state parks pass)? I just spent like $80 for a fishing license I
won’t use in order to contribute to the state and be able to bird places. If we
are paying, it seems like we should be able to get in (although it’s sketchy
being in places where people are shooting...) without starting an flood of
emails, is there a way to clarify this or figure out how to approach the state
to get some access for birders?

[cobirds] Maybe eastern meadowlark?

Attachment available until Jun 22, 2020
Birding friends,
Another try at getting a photo of the eastern meadowlark near Bud Meilke
reservoir, and I got this video of the a meadowlark singing. It sounds like the
call of an eastern, but I’ll leave that up to those of you more experienced as
I. Any comments would be appreciated!

Each State Wildlife Area is managed under specific rules. It is a good idea for
birders to know the rules for an SWA before planning to bird there.

Re: [cobirds] Centennial SWA. Weld County

2020-05-23 Thread Joe Roller
Just as a point of information, the State Wildlife Area Steve Mlodinow is
referring to,
along the South Platte River in Weld County, has the formal name of:
"Centennial *Valley* SWA". At times it is referred to by its nickname,
"Centennial SWA".

The State Wildlife Area with a similar name, "Centennial SWA"
is on the north side of Blue Mesa Reservoir, in Gunnison County.

Neither is an ebird hotspot, but they soon will be.

[cobirds] Unknown bird!

2020-05-23 Thread Jace Wesley Brasher
Today while birding at gateway natural area in fort Collins me and my
family observed a bird that I was unable to identify even after extensive
research. The bird had a completely black body and a deep blue head. We saw
this bird twice in two different locations so there may be multiple. One
time it was observed by my non-birding family, and the second I saw if fly
into a tree overhead. I quickly compared it to the nearby lazuli bunting
and noticed it was not the same. Unlike the lazuli or black throated blue
warbler it did not have a white chest. We also considered blue grosbeak but
they dont have white wing bars where as this bird did.

Any ideas or help is greatly appreciated.

[cobirds] RIVOLI'S HUMMINGBIRD, El Paso County

2020-05-23 Thread Randy Vernon
Cobirders,

A female RIVOLI'S HUMMINGBIRD was at the feeders at the Fountain Creek
Nature Center at 11am today, observed by Jeff Hayes, Ron Goerzen and
myself. It was feeding next to a Broad-tailed Hummingbird, and the size
difference was remarkable--around 5" versus around 3 1/2". Extremely long
bill, grayish underparts, streaky throat, white patch behind eye.
Unfortunately no photo, because although I had a camera, I was so surprised
to see it that I spent the 30 seconds or so of good observation time trying
to memorize field marks and completely forgot to take a picture. Duh.

It only made one appearance, although I waited for an hour hoping for
another photo opp.

[cobirds] COLORADO RARE BIRD REPORT for Sunday, May 24, 2020

The Colorado Rare Bird report is an informational service.

Because of statewide coronavirus “Safer at Home” orders, this report is meant
to keep homebound readers abreast of rare bird sightings across the state
during spring migration. It does NOT endorse and is NOT meant to encourage the
pursuit of rare birds beyond your local area.

We urge readers to respect state and local restrictions on non-critical travel.
As potentially asymptomatic outside visitors, unethical urban/suburban “chase”
birders who travel to more remote locales may risk exposing isolated Colorado
populations to the virus.

To ensure your safety and that of others while birding, do the right thing.
Please practice physical distancing, wear face masks and follow all other
Covid-19 precautions.
___

Birders have been helpful by reporting updates to COBirds. Thanks!
CAPITAL LETTERS denote very rare species, as listed by the Colorado Bird
Records Committee at the CFO website. The Committee requests you please fill
out a report for sightings of these birds.
(*) indicates new information on a species.
For more information on birds seen today, go to cobirds.org and scroll to the
bottom for “Recent eBird Sightings.”

Note: In an attempt to limit an overlong daily report, we are omitting most
reports of these recently listed species from the daily report (exceptions
being when they are extremely rare for a given county):
Gray-cheeked Thrush, Northern Waterthrush, Black-and-white Warbler, Tennessee
Warbler, Nashville Warbler, Hooded Warbler, Northern Parula, Chestnut-sided
Warbler, Blackpoll Warbler, Palm Warbler, and Summer Tanager.

regulations. Huerfano and Las Animas have much more restrictive “safer at
home” regulations in effect, limiting travel within these counties to RESIDENTS
