[cobirds] Long-billed Curlews - Chatfield Sandspit

2020-09-07 Thread Gregg Goodrich
A pair of Long-billed Curlews were on the Chatfield Sandspit this morning
around 7:00 AM. Flew SW, maybe going to Platte River Delta. Saw one of the
Sagebrush Sparrows. Didn’t see the Caspian Tern. Windy and cool.

Also in SE corner of lake. Juvenile sitting on shoreline, so I am going to

2020-09-07 Thread Mike Hensley
The terns are still present and fairly active, although I believe the
Forster's Tern to actually be a juvenile Caspian. In flight, both birds
have the blackish wingtip undersides. Really embarrassingly bad digiscope
pics available for anyone interested.

[cobirds] Neotropic Cormorant, Buff-breasted Sandpiper, Jaeger sp., and others - Barr Lake SP

2020-09-07 Thread Jack Bushong
Hi all,

Barr Lake was phenomenal this morning for migrants. I started off below the
dam, which had a Cassin's Vireo, Nashville Warbler, and early Brown Creeper
among the hordes of Wilson's Warblers. Also present were Hammond's, Dusky,
and Willow Flycatchers, Townsend's Warblers, and throngs of Wilson's
Warblers (I tallied 134 of them today).

I then went to boat launch to scan for gulls and terns. One of the first
birds I laid eyes on was a Neotropic Cormorant. It was between the boat
launch and the dam on a slender island. While looking at the cormorant
through my scope, a juvenile jaeger made several passes above the dam.
Given its robust flight and relatively large appearance, among other
things, I'm thinking Pomarine/Parisitic (leaning the former). Also in the
area was a nice flock of Stilt Sandpipers.

After this, I went to the nature center where the continuing Philadelphia
Vireo was providing great views. It was with a Warbling Vireo in the tall
deciduous trees at the entrance.

I then walked out onto the mudflat to search for Doug Faulkner's
Buff-breasted Sandpiper, and found it with a flock of Killdeer in the SE
corner of the lake. Other birds there included a diverse assortment of
waterfowl and a flock of 17 Red-necked Phalaropes. On the way back to the
parking lot, I saw a Pink-sided Junco among a mixed flock near the banding
station (apparently Colorado's first eBird record this fall).

Overall a great outing, although it was getting warm and smoky toward the
end.

Good Birding,
Jack Bushong,
Louisville, CO

I think Mike is right re the second tern being a juvenile Caspian rather than a
Forster’s. Just looked at my photos and the legs are black.

[cobirds] Big Lake Day redux

2020-09-07 Thread Gary Brower
Good afternoon, COBirders!

What a fun day walking around Cherry Creek State Park! I’m so grateful for ALL
who joined in for all, or part, of the walk: Quinn, Dwayne, Cinnamon (who came
up from CO Sprgs), Colleen, Joey, Ken, and Susan. And, of course, we bumped
into a bunch of other birdy people along the way

Quinn, Dwayne, Cinnamon and I started at Tower Loop at 6:30a: temperature -
50º. Quinn and I ended at Tower Loop at 2:45p: temp - 91º. We ran into Joey at
the Swim Beach, and again at 12-mile (where he put us onto a Hammond’s
Flycatcher). Colleen and Susan (dear spouse) joined the merry band at 12-mile.
Ken joined in for a while, too, at 12-mile. Folks peeled off as their
schedules (or bodies) demanded.

The overall route took us south from the Tower Loop, along the lake to Pelican
Point, then “overland” (via the Shop Creek Trail, with some bush-whacking) to
the 12-mile Trail, continuing south to the bridge over Cherry Creek, and then
north along the creek. Onto the Cherry Creek Trail until the Cottonwood Creek
Wetlands, then on lakeside trails ’til the Marina. Finishing with the dam trail.

By the numbers (at least for ME . . .):

Logistics:
11.86 miles
8 hrs, 10 mins

Total Birds on the day: 73

Birds (for my lists):
1 Colorado Bird:
Pectoral Sandpiper
8 Arapahoe County Birds:
Pectoral Sandpiper (duh!)
Wilson’s Warbler (30+)
Peregrine Falcon
Bairds Sandpiper (2)
Lark Bunting (3)
Hammonds Flycatcher
Rock Wren (4)

Other (semi-)notable birds:
Lincolns Sparrow
Bald Eagle
Forster's Tern
Ruddy Ducks (a cool flock that kept us busy trying to identifying them)
Yellow-headed blackbirds — a bunch at the Swim Beach area
Northern Shoveler
Osprey
Sage Thrasher
Virginia Rail
Woodhouse’s Scrub-Jay
Lark Bunting
Eastern Kingbird
Rock Wren (4)
Savannah Sparrow (4 or so)

Unfortunate "misses” (since 75 would’ve been a nice round number):
Townsends Warbler
Spotted Sandpiper
Rock Pigeon (!)

Again, thanks to all who joined me on my “folly”! It was suggested that this
become an annual event. I’m game!

Sore legs, and all . . . .

Gary Brower
Unincorporated Arapahoe County

COBirders-Yesterday (9/6)I received an email from my friend Jim Thompson of
La Junta. He said the image below was taken in his back yard about 8:00 a.m.
Sunday morning. Jim writes, "These two were at another tree and flew off
when I got camera, then appeared at this tree. Brown Thrasher was picking
thru the Hairy's bark droppings. The Brown Thrasher was very busy this
morning."
