Hello CO Birders,

Stewardship and Conservation in the San Luis Valley
Thursday, May 19th from 5pm - 6pm MT

Rivers know no property boundaries, and that’s created an ongoing challenge
in the San Luis Valley of Colorado. Channels, like that of the Rio Grande
river in the SLV, are meant to wander, meander, and form anything but a
straight line. These processes create a variety of habitats for fish,
amphibians, mammals, and, of course, birds! However, given land ownership,
property boundaries, water rights, and agricultural production, it’s harder
and harder for humans to work with a wandering river. There’s a careful
balance between happy humans, a happy river, and happy habitat.

Join Bird Conservancy's Private Lands Wildlife Biologist Anna Greenberg on
Thursday, May 19th at 5pm MST to learn about this balance and how folks in
the SLV are working towards its implementation.

The program fee is $3 to attend this webinar.

In order to provide equitable access to all, complimentary tickets are
available at no cost to the participant thanks to support from generous
donors.

*

After registering you will receive a confirmation email containing the ZOOM
link to be used the day of the webinar.

2022-05-11 Thread charles...@gmail.com
A fledged Horned Lark was chasing it's parent around the short grass
prairie area on the Auto Loop at Rocky Mountain Arsenal May 7. Horned
Larks have been there all winter and territorial for the last month at
least. 2 of 3 eagle nests have 4-6 week old chicks. The northern most
nest can be seen from the Auto Tour. We watched a parent shed a prairie
dog and feed the young.

[cobirds] The Other Bugs with Boulder County Audubon

2022-05-11 Thread Sydney Rayl

*Flies, Bees, and Spiders, Oh My!*

Join us *Tuesday, May 24* to learn about some species of exquisite insects
and bugs that we often take for granted: wasps, flies, beetles, bees, and
spiders among others. Guided by Scott Severs, we’ll learn their ecological
roles and where to find them. We’ll also spend a little time on photography
tips and tricks that bring out their natural beauty.

Scott Severs is the senior wildlife biologist for the City of Longmont
Parks, Open Space, and Trails, implementing the goals of conservation in
the City’s wildlife management plan. He has previously collected avian data
for wind and solar projects, as well as the primary bird distribution data
for Soapstone Ranch Open Space in Fort Collins. In the summertime he can be
found photographing beautiful insects along a trail.

*When*: Tuesday, May 24, 7:15 - 8:45 pm

*Where*: Online via Zoom. The meeting link will be provided *here*
 the day of the
event. We encourage you to join the meeting a few minutes early to avoid
any technical difficulties.

[cobirds] CO Birding Challenge this Past Weekend

2022-05-11 Thread BCO gal

A big thank you to all the participants and donors in Colorado Field
Ornithologists’ Colorado Birding Challenge. We’re still processing the
eBird Trip reports and the donations. But as of right now, your efforts
mean more than $35,000 has been raised! If you pledged to pay by check, you
still have time to make it count toward the fundraising goal. Just mail it
to:

Colorado Field Ornithologists, ATTN: COBC, PO Box 1568, Loveland, CO 80539

Any donations collected by this Sunday, May 15th will count toward this
fundraiser.

We’ll report final numbers soon. Winners will be announced and honored at
the CFO annual meeting on May 21, 2022 in Pueblo, CO, during the annual CFO
Convention: https://cobirds.org/current-convention/

This year’s Birding Challenge fundraiser will help support the Gunnison
Basin-Sagebrush Ecosystem Alliance's (GB-SEA’s) cheatgrass removal and
sagebrush habitat restoration. In addition to Gunnison Sage-Grouse
recovery, this will also support habitat recovery for other sagebrush
dependent species including Brewer’s Sparrow, Sagebrush Sparrow, Sage
Thrasher, Green-tailed Towhee and Vesper Sparrow.

Would you like to support this critically important restoration effort? You
can donate here: https://charity.pledgeit.org/c/hgqOlXNfUt/contribute/select

Thanks and enjoy that Spring birding!
