Bill Kaempfer and I just had three Buffy’s. 400 yards from the boat ramp and 50
yards from the water’s edge.

[cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies-Chico Basin Ranch 9/1/22

2022-09-01 Thread Chicobander
Wilson's Warbler and Western Wood-Pewee made up the bulk of the catch today
at the banding station. An early fall migrant the Blue Grosbeak made a
visit to our nets. I thought they might be all gone. I have not heard or
seen any Bullock's Orioles lately which are early migrants as well. Eleven
bird species were captured.
*33 New Birds*
Wilson's Warbler -10
Western Flycatcher -1
Dusky Flycatcher -2
Western Wood-Pewee -7
House Wren -1
Blue Grosbeak -2
Western Tanager -2
Gray Catbird -2
Brown Thrasher -4
American Robin -2

*2 Recaptures*
American Redstart
Wilson's Warbler

The Chico Basin Ranch Banding Station is operated Monday - Saturday through
September 29th. Depending on the weather, banding will conclude around
11:30 AM. Come visit the Ranch to see what is migrating through the area
and stop by the banding station.

[cobirds] Common Nighthawks - Arapahoe

2022-09-01 Thread Jared Del Rosso
The last two late afternoons / early evenings (approx. 6:30 - 7:00 PM) have
brought flights of Common Nighthawks over my Centennial home and
neighborhood. Some appear migrating southward; others appear to be feeding
in the neighborhood.

Two nights ago, I saw about 20 of the birds, in two separate flocks: one of
about six and one of about a dozen, give or take. I relocated about four of
the birds feeding fairly low over side roads near the High Line Canal
Trail.

Last night, it was just three or four birds flying eastish.

For metro area birders hoping to spot these birds before they leave the
state, most of my sightings this summer have been 30-90 minutes before
sunset, confounding our sense of them as dawn / dusk birds. I've seen a
single crepuscular bird -- flying away from me, as I biked the High Line
Canal Trail a few weeks ago.

Unrelated -- yesterday evening, a little before sunset, agastaches were
filled with White-lined Sphinx moths (about a half dozen) and two
hummingbirds who seemed to do the impossible: tolerate each other as they
fed in a single plant. It was quite remarkable. Some of the moths will make
these absurd, wide looping flights around the plants and me when I "flush"
them from their feeding activity.
