[cobirds] Around western Centennial (Arapahoe)

2022-10-05 Thread Jared Del Rosso
I haven't been birding much -- just seeing what I see as I look at other
things (namely the last blooms of various asters). Even so, some meaningful
sightings in my yard (near Arapahoe and Centennial) and along the nearby
High Line Canal and Little Dry Creek Trails.

*Turkey Vultures* -- kettles of two dozen or so, for several days last week
and over the weekend, over my home and the High Line Canal Trail. Vultures,
cranes, and nighthawks -- remarkable and uncommon enough birds that can
sometimes pass by in large numbers -- always lead me to stop everything and
count.

A few from the kettle along the Canal came crashing into the cottonwoods,
causing passerby and me to pause and gawk.

An October *Western Tanager*, feeding with chickadees at a hackberry, along
the High Line Canal Trail over the weekend.

*Common Nighthawks*, last over my neighborhood on September 28 and
September 29. I was grateful for a few final sightings, as I always like
having the sense that I may be experiencing my last encounter for the year.

*Migration and "winter" birds converging - *This morning, in my yard,
dozens of Common Grackles (there have been hundreds moving around
Centennial lately), an Orange-crowned Warbler, a Ruby-crowned Kinglet, and
a Dark-eyed Junco. I thought I spotted some other sparrow -- it struck me
as not unlike a Lincoln's Sparrow -- but I may have misjudged another bird.

*Blue Jays* -- Cleaning the nearby shopping center (Streets of Southglenn)
of the acorns on its landscaping oaks. Barn Swallows seem gone, but a few
Say's Phoebes are still hanging around the center.

A few stray hummingbirds, species missed, hawking insects along the High
Line Canal Trail on Sunday and visiting the still-blooming agastaches in my
yard. The one in my yard struck me as a Black-chinned, with all the tail
bobbing.

Mammals...

Yesterday, a Bobcat, creeping along the Little Dry Creek, as I crept along
the creek, too. This is my third encounter of a Bobcat this year and the
first during daylight. Monday, a pair of Red Foxes howling outside my
windows at 4:00 AM. Over the weekend, a Raccoon climbing out my chimney.

A young man traveling wanted to know whether they were really dinosaur
tracks here. I gave him detailed directions and suggested going to
Picketwire Canyon in SE CO where he could walk on/along a 1/4 mile dinosaur
trackway, but he said he was going to Utah next so I suggested Dinosaur
National Monument's Quarry Exhibit Hall https://tinyurl.com/5xkup2n

Weather:
Light winds from the West changing by the 1st full hour to East with
increasing force from Level 2-5, temperature 11-16°C, high humidity for
Denver 60-81%, cloud cover 35>70>25%, clear visibility only 8 km.

Raptor Observations:
The first migrant raptor was a CH at 8:49 AM MST far to the west and
extremely high which I found fortuitously while looking at a distant RT
through my scope. In the next hour and unknown small raptor probably came
up low behind one of the cedars NE of the watch, flew past slightly below
eye level and was beyond me when I first saw it it, and unfortunately
disappeared behind one of the cedars at the watch and could not be found
again. The only other migrant was an unknown buteo that I found while
looking at a distant TV to the East, again through my scope.
Non-migrant raptors: Western RT 2, RT 1, TV 1.

Non-raptor Observations:
Made up for the lack of hawks – Rock Wren 1, Steller's Jay 1, Mountain

Pink-sided Junco 1, Woodhouse's Scrub-Jay 2, Black-billed Magpie 1, House

[cobirds] Re: Are Ringed-neck Ducks in Salida, CO

2022-10-05 Thread plarimer
Ann,
Yes, Ring-necked Ducks are a common occurrence during the fall, winter and
Spring on Sands Lake. As for the domestic duck, it is also common for
people to dump their unwanted pets, especially ducks and geese at Sands.
As for the black one that you saw, it could be a Cuyuga, I have not been by
Sands since early last week, but I will take a look tomorrow. There is a
great variety of waterfowl there, as the lake never freezes all winter, and
it is a common roost site for a number of species. Both goldeneyes will be
there, along with Redheads and a good variety of dabbling ducks.
Occasionally a rarity will show, such as the long-tailed duck that wintered
there a few years ago.

[cobirds] Estes Park (Larimer) 10/5

2022-10-05 Thread Mark Miller
Hi Everyone,

I spent this morning 10/5 birding the Lake Estes Trail. A White-throated
Sparrow was with a flock of White-crowned Sparrows and juncos at the north
end of the trail near frisbee golf hole #14 along the elk fence. The
Northern Parula seen yesterday appears to have departed.

[cobirds] Request for Proposal: Colorado Birding Challenge Beneficiary Program

2022-10-05 Thread BCO gal

In May, 2022 supporters and participants raised more than $35,000
in Colorado Field Ornithologists (CFO) 2nd annual Colorado Birding
Challenge (CoBC). This extraordinary fundraising effort in 2022 benefitted
habitat restoration for the endangered Gunnison Sage-Grouse and other
sagebrush obligate species.

CFO is now inviting qualifying organizations to submit proposals to be the
beneficiary
of the 2023 Colorado Birding Challenge .
Proposed
projects should have a lasting benefit to Colorado birds or the habitats on
which they rely.

For any questions, or to request the proposal details, contact CFO at this
email address - COBC AT COBIRDS.ORG or visit this page
on our website. The deadline to submit
a proposal is Friday, November 18, 2022. Information about past Colorado
Birding Challenge events and their impacts can be found here
.

And thank you again to all you who made a difference in our last two
Colorado Birding Challenges!
