Observation start time: 08:00:00
Observation end time: 16:30:00
Total observation time: 8.5 hours

Official Counter: Carol Cwiklinski

Observers:Janet Peters, Kathie Moses, Sammy Korengut , Steve Ryder

Visitors:
Thanks to everyone who helped today, enduring difficult conditions for
spotting raptors. Steve, Kathie, Janet, Sammy and Gordon Penley helped
locate and identify birds. The trail was busy with bicyclists and hikers.

Weather:
Today was an eye-burner, sunny with zero cloud cover most of the day. A few
clouds developed over the ridge and west of us late in the day, which
helped us locate a few birds. Temperatures were very warm, and we had a
moderate wind all day. Winds varied in direction but maintained an easterly
component all day.

Raptor Observations:
Raptor movement was slow today. We located birds east, west and over the
ridge, but there was no steady flow of migrants, just a trickle through the
day. We experienced about three hours with no migrants.

Non-raptor Observations:
Mountain Chickadee, squirrel (maybe red squirrel) at observation.

Predictions:
Winds are predicted to be strong tomorrow. A red flag warning has been
issued for the ridge, indicating high fire danger due to winds and low
relative humidity.

[cobirds] Red Crossbills on the Big Thompson (Larimer)

2023-04-11 Thread Jeff Kehoe
I've had about a dozen Red Crossbills at my tray feeder the last couple
days. Several males & females. What a wonderful site! We are at about 5600
feet right on the river in the lower canyon.

Re: [cobirds] Large committee of vultures in the skies above Fort Collins

2023-04-11 Thread Ajit Antony
I hadn't heard of a group of vultures called a committee so I looked it up
online and found :

"The term or name for a group of vultures varies depending on where they
are, although the generic term is a flock. When they are flying in
formation, they are referred to as a kettle. When they are resting in a
tree or on the ground, vultures are called a committee, and whilst feeding,
they are known as a wake."

A bit surprised to see 3 Snow Geese this morning at Union Res. In the NE
corner, loafing with the resident pelicans.
