[cobirds] Changes Coming to Chico Basin Ranch in 6 Months (El Paso/Pueblo)

2023-09-07 Thread linda hodges

Birders,

Aiken Audubon is close to signing a Chico birding lease with the State Land
Board. Prepare for some major changes.

*The lease and the restrictions listed below will go into effect on March
1, 2024.* This is earlier than we, the Bird Conservancy of the Rockies,
and Ranchlands anticipated.

· *Access*: Birders will have access only 10 weeks of the year: 5
weeks each during spring and fall migration. The dates will coincide with
Bird Conservancy of the Rockies’ (BCR) banding operation. A few Aiken
members will be able to visit the ranch one day/month during the off-months
in order to maintain a year-round bird species count.

· *Hours of access*: 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. only

· *Number of birders*: Limited to 20 per day

· *Locations open to birders*: Banding Station, Headquarters and Rose
Pond. Specific parking areas will be designated. Access to other parts of
the ranch will not be allowed.

*· **Reservations*: Birders will be required to register and pay in
advance via a registration system to be administered by Aiken. The daily
fee has not yet been determined.

*· **Time Frame*: Aiken will hold a five-year lease, though either
party may cancel at any time.

*Again, beginning March 1, 2024, access is expected to cease until spring
migration (date TBD by Bird Conservancy of the Rockies.) *We will keep you
posted, but urge you to visit the ranch while access is unfettered..

Linda Hodges, Aiken Audubon

[cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies - Barr Banding Report 9/7/23

2023-09-07 Thread meredith
A strange morning - We caught 20 of today's 27 new birds (~75%) in 5 (20%)
of our nets, and all in the 2nd half of the morning. These 5 nets are to
the south/left as you walk out past the front nets into the smartweed (for
those who know the station). This highly mixed flock (every species except
the WEWP was caught there) hung around the area for our final 2 hours.
Surprise of the morning was an early Yellow-rumped Warbler (Myrtle). Here
are the 27 new birds of the day:

Western Wood-Pewee 1
Warbling Vireo 1
Red-breasted Nuthatch 1
House Wren 2
Orange-crowned Warbler 2
Yellow Warbler 1
Yellow-rumped Warbler, Myrtle 1
MacGillivray's Warbler 1
Wilson's Warbler 17

For anyone thinking about a last-minute birding outing tomorrow morning,
our 7:30-8:30 visitor slot is part of a Denver Field Ornithologists field
trip to Barr Lake, led by banding volunteer and great birding guide Charlie
Chase. In addition to the visit to the banding station, there will be a
walk around the area - think egrets, herons, shore birds, bald eagles,
peregrine, etc. I believe there are a few spaces left - go to the DFO
website to sign up!

Except for tomorrow (and for that see above!), if you would like to visit,
we have one-hour slots (up to 15 visitors at a time) from 7:30-8:30 most
weekday mornings (Tues-Fri, we are closed on Mon) and 8, 9 , and 10 a.m.
one-hour time slots on the weekends. Click here

 to
make a reservation.

[cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies-Chico Basin Ranch 9/7/2023

2023-09-07 Thread Chicobander
Each day is a mystery as to what birds or if many birds will appear in the
nets or around the banding station proper. Very quiet today- the
hummingbirds were active after about 8 AM today. Yesterday hummingbirds
were not active until after 9- 10AM. A couple net checks with zero to 2
birds and then the migrants overnight must have dropped into the olive
grove around 7:30. The day heated up quick so birds quieted down @ 10 AM.
We did catch 15 bird species today.

*50 New Birds Banded*
Wilson's Warbler- 20
Orange-crowned Warbler- 1
MacGillivray's Warbler- 3
Western Flycatcher- 1
House Wren- 3
Red-breasted Nuthatch- 1
Chipping Sparrow- 4
Lincoln's Sparrow- 2
Lazuli Bunting- 1
Swainson's Thrush- 2
Yellow-breasted Chat- 1
Green- tailed Towhee- 4
Western Tanager- 4
Gray Catbird- 2
Brown Thrasher- 1

No Recaptures

The Banding Station will be open tomorrow and Saturday from Sunrise to
around 11:30 AM. It looks to be another couple warm days so we will
probably be closing a little early these next couple days. Stop by and
visit the banding station if you are in the area. Have a good day!

[cobirds] Sandhill cranes?

2023-09-07 Thread mkeilly
I will be passing through the San Luis Valley tomorrow and have in the past
gotten to see sandhill cranes as they migrate through. This is earlier than
I've gone but I'm wondering if they have been observed yet this fall.

Thanks,

Michael Keilly, Erie, Colorado
