[cobirds] CSR Report, El Paso Co, Friday

2023-09-22 Thread Steven Brown

Hey COBorders,

Wow. What a strange fall migration season this has been. It is a rare day that
I band more birds than either the Chico Basin or Barr Lake stations! I had a
whopping total of 15 birds today, and may have had more if I hadn’t been blown
out about 945. There were actually a lot of birds around today, and many
moving in the willows, up until the time the nets were perpendicular to the
poles! I also saw more flocks moving down the creek than I have all season -
several of smaller birds, and one flock of 250+ RW Blackbirds. Plus low fly-bys
of Sharp-shinned and Cooper’s Hawks.

This follows 10 birds on Wednesday, and 7 birds Thursday. Sigh.

Banded today:

RC Kinglet
RB Nuthatch (2)
Chipping Sparrows (2). Most years I’ve had about 1000 by now - this year - 150.
FOS Savannah Sparrow
Spotted Towhee (2)
Orange-crowned Warbler
Com Yellowthroat
Wilson’s Warbler (5, incl 2 ad F)

Have a good weekend,
Steve Brown

[cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies - Barr Banding Report, 9/21 and 9/22/23

2023-09-22 Thread meredith
Got a bit behind in my reporting, due to the craziness of the past few
days, so this covers both Thursday and Friday. Thursday was slow and
Friday (today) was pitiful...18 new birds on Thursday and only 3
today. I'm not sure there has been a day in mid-September when we only
banded 3 new birds. Here is the breakdown for the 2 days:

Thursday:
House Wren 2
Yellow-rumped Warbler, Audubon's 2
Common Yellowthroat 2
Wilson's Warbler 7
Yellow-breasted Chat 1
Green-tailed Towhee 1
Chipping Sparrow 3

Friday:
Orange-crowned Warbler 1
Yellow-rumped Warbler, Audubon's 1
Common Yellowthroat 1

If you would like to visit our station, we have one-hour slots (up to 15
visitors at a time) from 7:30-8:30 most weekday mornings (Tues-Fri, we are
closed on Mon) and 8, 9 , and 10 a.m. one-hour time slots on the weekends.
Saturday/tomorrow is full; there are a few spots remaining in the 10 a.m.
slot on Sunday. Still plenty of opportunities to visit next week. Click
here

 to
make a reservation.

2023-09-22 Thread Lori Pivonka
Great report Josephine!

I was walking around Dixon Reservoir yesterday afternoon and happened to spot a
rolled up net close to the trail. My friend asked what it was for and I shared
all about BCOR and bird banding! So excited there is a new station at Dixon.
I hope it will continue in future years.

Thanks so much for choosing a career in Ornithology and for all you to do help
us learn more about birds!
Hoot!! 黎

Happy Autumn Equinox!

Re: [cobirds] Red Crossbills: Type 2 and 4 recorded together (Boulder)

2023-09-22 Thread Nathan Pieplow
Richard et al,

Indeed, your recordings are of a Type 2 and a Type 4 bird. (People who want
to listen to these recordings might want to use this link instead:
https://ebird.org/checklist/S150498144
).

Type 2 Red Crossbills are the most common type, both nationwide and in
Colorado. Type 4 is the third most common call type in Colorado, after Type
2 and the high-elevation Type 5. Type 4s are not in Colorado every year,
but when they show up, they can be numerous. This year we are getting good
numbers of Type 4s both in the mountains and down on the adjacent plains. I
had a Type 4 bird fly over me at Twin Lakes in Gunbarrel about two weeks
ago, and a Type 2 bird there more recently.

[cobirds] Red Crossbills: Type 2 and 4 recorded together (Boulder)

2023-09-22 Thread 'Richard Trinkner' via Colorado Birds

A week ago, while with my dog on his morning walk, I noticed two Red Crossbills perched atop a spruce tree in our front
yard. They were calling and they sounded different from one another, so I pulled out my phone and used Merlin to record
them.I studied the sonograms today and think they were Type 2 Ponderosa ("pope-pope-pope") and Type 4 Douglas
Fir ("whit-whit-whit").This was the first time that I'd heard crossbills of different types calling together
and it helped me appreciate how different their calls are. This flock of mostly Type 2 RECRs has been in and around the
conifers within a block of the south side of the Boulder Community Gardens since August 28.  They were still there this
morning. You can hear the recording and see the sonograms at https://ebird.org/checklist/S150498144/media.By the way, I
recently read the fantastic book, "An Immense World" by Ed Yong.  In it, I learned that birds hear
"faster" than humans.  While we may need a sonongram to see the details of a few milliseconds of bird calls,
the birds apparently can hear the nuances quite easily.Richard TrinknerBoulder

2023-09-22 Thread Susan Rosine
Thank you for the update, Tyler.
I have found out that this year the bird banding will continue as usual.
FRICO mitigation work is not heading further towards our banding station
this year.
Next year, before we start banding, FRICO will do required work near/around
the banding station. Currently, they have said they will only remove trees
that MUST be removed, in order to save the dam, and thus the lake.
It is a big change, it is sad, but it could be way worse. Obviously the dam
and the lake must be saved, and unfortunately that does mean loss of some
habitat.

public sources. It is those of us who are from the outside to be rabble

[cobirds] Barr Lake - Statement From Bird Conservancy of the Rockies

2023-09-22 Thread Tyler Cash

Dear CO Birders,

As most of you know, recent changes in the management of water storage at
Barr Lake has led Farmer’s Reservoir and Irrigation Company (FRICO) to
begin a project to remove vegetation from a portion of the shoreline. Barr
Lake State Park is a wildlife viewing and recreation destination for the
local and regional community and it is one of the top birding destinations
in the state. The park is popular for horseback riding, fishing, boating,
kayaking, hiking, biking, waterfowl hunting and more. We are committed to
work with FRICO and Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) to mitigate as much
habitat loss as possible, to avoid any negative economic impact on Brighton
and surrounding communities. Bird Conservancy of the Rockies strives to
provide authentic, place-based nature opportunities for all, regardless of
ability, economic or ethnic background.

We are optimistic that we were heard and FRICO is committed to minimizing
the damage and protecting as much habitat as possible while addressing
potential safety issues.

We want to thank the bird and conservation community and our partners with
Colorado Field Ornithologists (CFO), Denver Field Ornithologists (DFO),
Audubon, Wild Birds Unlimited-Fort Collins, Longmont and Denver area
stores, individuals and other organizations who are raising their voices
and providing awareness for this critical place for birds.

As a science-based organization, we want to stay grounded and take a
level-headed approach, and use the data we have been collecting to help
inform future management. Grassroots efforts and partnerships are our path
forward so we are all contributing to solutions. We will continue to
monitor the situation and stay engaged with CPW and FRICO to help ensure a
sustainable place for wildlife and people for generations to come. Stay
tuned for additional information as it becomes available. Please continue
to visit and support Barr Lake State Park.

We appreciate you and your support of Bird Conservancy of the Rockies.

Sincerely,

*Bird Conservancy of the Rockies*

Tammy VerCauteren, Executive Director
Amy Burnett, Communications Director
Sherry Nickolaus, Education Director
Tyler Cash, Digital Engagement Manager
