I saw 2, Surf Scoter, 1, f. Black Scoter , and 1, f. type White-winged Scoter. I could not get a good view of a third Scoter which was way on the other side of the lake and behind the Canada Geese. What a stitch to watch these Scoters. I could barely pull myself away. We are talking major chowing down. One Surf Scoter ate 1, Crayfish, quickly dove, ate a second Crayfish, dove again and ate a third Crayfish, dove again, ate a fourth Crayfish, and dove again and ate a fifth Crayfish. While this Surf was eating the other Surf Scoter continued to swallow Crayfish, while the Black Scoter also ate Crayfish. The Black was having a harder time swallowing the Crayfish than the Surf. Then these 3 scoters swam a bit out into the middle of the lake and closed their eyes very briefly and Not for long. The 3 of them proceeded back to where they were originally feeding and they all started chowing down as if they had never eaten. No wonder the Scoters are at this park. It is a giant restaurant . I've seen Scoters eat Mussels off the east coast, but they did not swallow them as quickly as the the Scoters ate their prey in Prospect Lake. Also present, but not in order, were Lesser Scaup, 1 pair of greater Scaup, 1, pair of Canvasback, 1, pair of Redhead, Common Goldeneye, many Ruddy Duck and Hooded Merganser, Canada Geese, Cackling Geese, 1, California Gull, and many Ring-billed Gull. [cobirds] Re: 2, White-winged Scoters,Marston ,Denver Co.
I went to Marston this afternoon specifically looking for the Swans, I also saw 2 White-winged Scoters at great distance on the southeast side of the lake, very far off but identifiable. Art Hudak Denver County On Friday, December 14, 2012 8:33:16 PM UTC-7, tjcalliope wrote: OK, I give up or I need new eyes. Today at Marston Reservoir, I saw 2, first winter White-winged Scoters in the north section of the lake. I thought one of the Scoters had left the lake about 6 days ago, to find a second one today. Again Marston birds tend to be way out far away, so maybe I just missed the bird or it went somewhere else temporarily. After looking for birds almost daily at Marston for 3 weeks now, hopefully I will get a better look at the Scoters tomorrow duriing the xmas count. Who knows, maybe the Surf Scoter is out there in the lake, also. I could not find any Tundra Swans anywhere today in other nearby ponds/lakes. Marston, because it is so deep is not the best feeding habitat for Swans. It would be very difficult for Swans to get seeds and roots, and plant material. Because of this, both Trumpeter and Tundra Swans only stay at Marston for about a day or several hours when migrating in late fall [at least this is my experience]. Later on we saw one Palm Warbler in a mixed flock of birds in the pines on the west side of the small lake. Later in the morning when it seemed like there were more birders than birds, everyone had good looks at the Palm Warbler on the east side of the small lake. There were not near as many Yellow- rumped Warblers as yesterday, and we did not see either the Blackpoll or Black-throated Blue Warblers today. Go outside and bird! Birding is exceptional currently. I arrived at Belmar Park at 3:00 this afternoon. In 3 hours of time I had several oddies. A *Palm Warbler* (PAWA) presented on the northwest side of the park working between some Pinyon's and wild plums. Always look low 6' or less from the ground. On the west side of the wetland pond to the north of Kountze Lake along the horse trail I had a *Pine Warbler *(PIWA). 49 YRWA, 3 OCWA, and 1 WIWA were also present, this flock keeps on giving and giving. As an added bonus a Brown Creeper (BRCR). The horse trail to the north of Kountze and the west of the wetland pond is excellent, specifically where the large Willow trunk has fallen into the Spruce. 25 species at Belmar, 14 species in the backyard. I arrived at Belmar Park around 4:00 PM this afternoon in search of the Palms and Blackpolls. I ran into Ira Sanders, he told me he had just seen an* Ash-throated Flycatcher *(very late) working the east side of Kountze, after a short discussion Karleen Schofield arrived and soon thereafter Ira called me over to see the Flycatcher. The bird was very cooperative staying in one place for over ten minutes, exceptional views. Norm Lewis showed up and was able to also get good views of the bird. We then traveled around the lake and found a single *Palm Warbler* on the south side. No luck on the Blackpoll. Nothing else of note. There are still many YRWA present. More information than anyone really wants to know. Familial obligations disallowed me from tending to the warbler flock at Belmar this weekend and I have to say I pulled out a hankie and wiped my eyes when I read Mr. Chavez's post with regard to the oddies (my word not in the Oxford) he discovered. A complete breakdown follows: On 9/1 Mr. J S (eBird shared records) reported 2 YEWA and 1 WIWA. On 9/3 I had 2 YEWA and 1 WIWA. On 9/13 I had 4 YERU, 2 TOWA and 9 WIWA. On 9/20 I had 2 OCWA, 47 YRWA, 2 TOWA and 4 WIWA. On 9/21 I had 1 OCWA, 53 YRWA, 1 TOWA , 1 AMRE (oddie), 1 MAWA (oddie), and 3 WIWA. On 9/22 PJ R (eBird shared records) had 26 YRWA. On 9/23 PJ R (eBird shared records ) had 6 YRWA. On 9/23 D F (eBird shared records) had 6 YRWA. On 9/23 M C had 5 OCWA, X YRWA, 1 PAWA (very oddie), 2 BPWA (very oddie), and 4 WIWA. Does this mean anything? I think so. Art Hudak Denver County On Sunday, September 23, 2012 4:09:38 PM UTC-6, Mark wrote: Today, I went to Belmar to see if the warbler flock reported was still around. First and foremost this is not birding where you arrive and the birds have tea and crumpets layed out awaiting your visit, effort is required. In three hours on 9/20 I had 2 Orange-crowned (OCWA), 47 Yellow-rumped (YRWA) many more present, 2 Towsend's (TOWA) and 4 Wilson's (WIWA). The Roadrunner was observed by myself, Mark Amershak, Edward Donnan and three other birders from 12:30-1:30 actively feeding in the area between CR93 and Alameda, not on the ridge as usual , on the grassy slope down the hill from Alameda. When first seen the bird was sunning on a light colored rock for 10 minutes give or take and then became very active zig zagging up and down the slope pecking at grass clumps and around Yucca plants. One gentleman that ventured down to get better photos said the bird appeared to be eating earth worms and small grasshoppers. [cobirds] Lesser Black-backed Gull, Centennial Park, Arapahoe County
I observed the Lesser Black-backed Gull again today. After a review of photographs taken by Kayleen Niyo on 12/14, I am confident that this is the same bird. During observation today the bird took flight in direction of the transfer station (dump) across Union ave. I speculate the bird is very content at this location, an endless supply of garbage adjacent to a decent size body of water, a Gulls paradise. [cobirds] Snowy Owl at Aurora Resevoir.

[cobirds] Pine Warbler-Arapahoe CO
The Spectacular male Pine Warbler presented 5 times in an hour and 15 minutes of observation. I observed 19 species total with a White- breasted Nuthatch in addition to the aforementioned species that were present yesterday. Thank you so much Becky for allowing us all into your home to observe your birders paradise. [cobirds] Tundra Swan, Denver County 12/06
At West Florida Avenue and South Platte River Drive A short distance (100 yards) upstream from the water shack on the West side within a large group (350+) of Canadians I observed a single immature Tundra Swan. I spotted the Swan from my vehicle when turning South on Platte River Drive. I pulled off in a dangerous location, grabbed the binocs, ran across the road and observed for about 5 Minutes. I had to move the vehicle, I pulled off a short distance ahead, jogged back and to my dismay, disbelief, disappointment I could not relocate the Swan, maybe 6 minutes had passed. On a different subject at Belmar Park, Jefferson County November 30th I observed an American Bittern in the small pond to the North. I observed the bird for about an hour and had five other observers join for the second hour, I did not have a camera but the others took many photos. Snow Goose and hybrids are everywhere!
