[cobirds] Registration is Now Open for CFO's 3rd Annual CO Birding Challenge!

2023-03-18 Thread BCO gal
Hundreds of birders from the Western Slope to the Eastern Plains have
participated in the past, raising more than $75,000 for critical
conservation efforts in our state.

This year’s event takes place Saturday, May 20th during peak spring
migration. The objective for this year’s event is to:

· Engage hundreds of birders in a fun day of finding and learning about
Colorado's birds.

· Raise funds for Pinyon Jay conservation; specifically, the surveying and
mapping of breeding colony locations to prioritize for land conservation.
>From 1967–2015, the population levels of Pinyon Jays fell by an estimated
83.5%. Identifying these areas is critical for long-term habitat management
and protection.

· Generate eBird data for all 64 counties on the same day.

· Provide support for the expanding programs and work of Colorado Field
Ornithologists.

The Colorado Birding Challenge is a team effort, so register and start
organizing your team now! Click here to find out more about organizing a
team:

[cobirds] CFO's Year of the Pinyon Jay - And How You Can Get Involved

2023-02-22 Thread BCO gal
For CFO, 2023 is the Year of the Pinyon Jay.

In 2023 Colorado Field Ornithologists (CFO) are offering several ways to
make an impact for Pinyon Jays. This species has been declining in
population range-wide. From 1967–2015, population levels fell an estimated
83.5%. In 2022, Defenders of Wildlife petitioned the U.S. Fish and Wildlife
Service to have the species federally listed as threatened or endangered
species.

*Surveys*
CFO has had two Zoom presentations in the last few months
on the state of Pinyon Jays as well as a request for community scientists
to participate in community science survey efforts. On December 22nd we
heard from John Boone of the Great Basin Bird Observatory, kicking off
CFO's partnership with them (among other partners) to survey Pinyon Jays in
Colorado. On February 8th we also heard from Amy Seglund and Liza Rossi
(from Colorado Parks & Wildlife) about Pinyon Jay phenology and how
community scientists can help with Pinyon Jay breeding surveys.
Videos of both of these presentations can be found on Colorado Field
Ornithologists' Pinyon Jay related presentations playlist

 on
our YouTube channel. The pdf of the CPW slide presentation can be found
here

.

If you are interested in participating in either of these surveys, we
strongly suggest looking over our Pinyon Jay Community Science Project page

 on
our website for additional information, guidelines, and resources.
*IMPORTANT:* If you document Pinyon Jay breeding behaviors in an area,
please immediately leave the area and do not disturb breeding birds. Birds
will readily abandon nests if disturbed and you can inadvertently attract
predators to a colony.

*Financially Support Research Efforts*
We're pleased to announce that the beneficiary of CFO's 2023 Colorado
Birding Challenge

 (which
takes place May 20, 2023) is a research project, led by Emily Macklin and
Dr. Amanda Cheeseman (and in partnership with USFWS, BLM, and CPW)
to identify locations of Pinyon Jay colonies and to further map
areas of high-quality nesting habitat across Colorado, ensuring woodland
management is consistent with Pinyon Jay recovery. So start to assemble
your teams and stay tuned for the official kickoff to our popular Colorado
Birding Challenge!

Over the next few months there will be additional opportunities to
review the protocols and understand opportunities to provide more in-depth
field work.

*MONITORING FOR YELLOW RAIL IN COLORADO WITH ERIC DEFONSO*
 Friday, July 22, 2022 5:00PM—7:00PM

*Description:* Earlier this week Eric DeFonso discovered a singing yellow
rail only the second ever for Colorado (first was in 1906). Later a second
one was found in the same marsh. CFO will offer this field trip to educate
birders about this interesting bird.

We will journey to the Monte Vista NWR to listen carefully for the
extremely rare Yellow Rail that has been detected since July 12th. The bird
can be heard from the auto-tour route at the 2nd stop (about 2/3 mile from
the main entrance), but we will also listen for a 2nd bird that has been
reported between the 1st and 2nd stops. We will arrive in the late
afternoon (after 5pm) and leave when Refuge closes to the public 1 hr after
sunset (9:22pm, or 2122), or earlier if participants are ready to do so.
The Yellow Rail is only detectable by its characteristic ticking sound –
the bird has not yet been seen, nor is likely to be seen. Photography is
unlikely, but please feel free to bring cameras and especially your means
of recording bird sounds! Cell phones can make pretty good recordings these
days, and that’s what I used when recording the bird back on the 12th when
I first encountered it.

Eric DeFonso has been involved in the birding and conservation community in
Colorado for over 15 years, ranging from volunteer stints with a raptor
rehabilitation program and being on the Board of Directors for the Fort
Collins Audubon Society, to giving presentations to Audubon chapters across
the state and guiding field trips for the Colorado Field Ornithologists.
Eric has an extensive collection of bird sound recordings, and now writes a
regular column on birding by ear for the journal Colorado Birds. Eric has
also been a surveyor for the ongoing IMBCR Breeding Bird survey project run
by the Bird Conservancy of the Rockies since 2013, and has been the crew
leader since 2021. He also now serves on the Colorado Bird Records
Committee, and edits reports for the North American Birds journal by the
American Birding Association (ABA).

*SAN LUIS VALLEY BIRDING WITH JOHN RAWINSKI*
Saturday, July 23, 2022 5:30AM—2:30PM

*Description: *John will not only give excellent bird viewing but also a
background about the plants, geology, history and diversity of the San Luis
Valley. Participants will do a car caravan to nearby locations and
discovering the Valley’s hidden treasures. After listening to the Yellow
Rails, we will then be travelling the west side of the Valley (The field
trip will start on the west side of the Valley and finish in Alamosa). SUV
is best vehicle with full tank. Carpooling encouraged but only if driver
allows, being still cognizant of COVID. Guests will need to sign the CFO
liability waiver electronically with registration. Guests will need to
bring a lunch. It has been very hot statewide so please stay hydrated.

John Rawinski is an author and retired soil scientist for the USDA after 31
year career. He has spent 14 Years as part-time naturalist for the Zapata
Ranch, Nature Conservancy.

P.S. And don't forget to check out the eight CFO's Hummingbird Workshop
Series field trips coming up! The first one starts this Thursday. For more
details and to sign up for one,

[cobirds] Colorado Birding Challenge results

2022-06-06 Thread BCO gal

It has been almost a month since the Colorado Field Ornithologists’ Birding
Challenge, and the donations keep rolling in. As of today CFO has raised (*drum
roll please*) $44,542 toward the $50,000 goal. This far exceeds the $35,496
that was raised in the CFO Birding Challenge last year.

If you scroll to the bottom of this email you'll see the winners in each of
the categories for this year's Challenge. Congratulations to those teams,
and we greatly appreciate every team that participated.

As a reminder, 85% of the funds raised will support Gunnison
Basin-Sagebrush Ecosystem Alliance cheatgrass removal and sagebrush habitat
restoration. In addition to Gunnison Sage-Grouse recovery, this will
support habitat recovery for other sagebrush-dependent species. The
remaining 15% will support other services to our members, including those
focused on research and education.

I’d like to share with you a video from the Co-Founder of the Alliance,
Patrick Magee, thanking all of the participants and donors, and
highlighting the impact these funds will have on Gunnison Sage-grouse
habitat restoration. Click here to access the video
,

and, when prompted, use passcode *@0m3?16y* to open it.

If you haven’t sent in your checks for the Birding Challenge, please do so
now. And if you’d like to make an additional donation, or someone you know
would also like to support this effort, here is the link to donate
. CFO would like to
reach that $50,000 goal and make the maximum impact.

Thank you everyone for stepping up for these critical sagebrush species in
our state!

[cobirds] CO Birding Challenge this Past Weekend

2022-05-11 Thread BCO gal

A big thank you to all the participants and donors in Colorado Field
Ornithologists’ Colorado Birding Challenge. We’re still processing the
eBird Trip reports and the donations. But as of right now, your efforts
mean more than $35,000 has been raised! If you pledged to pay by check, you
still have time to make it count toward the fundraising goal. Just mail it
to:

Colorado Field Ornithologists, ATTN: COBC, PO Box 1568, Loveland, CO 80539

Any donations collected by this Sunday, May 15th will count toward this
fundraiser.

We’ll report final numbers soon. Winners will be announced and honored at
the CFO annual meeting on May 21, 2022 in Pueblo, CO, during the annual CFO
Convention: https://cobirds.org/current-convention/

This year’s Birding Challenge fundraiser will help support the Gunnison
Basin-Sagebrush Ecosystem Alliance's (GB-SEA’s) cheatgrass removal and
sagebrush habitat restoration. In addition to Gunnison Sage-Grouse
recovery, this will also support habitat recovery for other sagebrush
dependent species including Brewer’s Sparrow, Sagebrush Sparrow, Sage
Thrasher, Green-tailed Towhee and Vesper Sparrow.

Would you like to support this critically important restoration effort? You
can donate here: https://charity.pledgeit.org/c/hgqOlXNfUt/contribute/select

Thanks and enjoy that Spring birding!

[cobirds] Birding Tour in Boulder County - Benefits Greenwood Wildlife Rehab Center

2010-08-24 Thread BCO gal
This is a shameless plug for a fundraiser that benefits Greenwood
Wildlife Rehabilitation Center in Lyons. We have a lot of great
auction items, but one of interest to my fellow birders is a four-hour
Boulder County birding tour for up to six people conducted by Joe
Prentice, a local bird expert and Daily Camera journalist. This item
will be available for up to a year after the auction. He will also
provide a checklist for everyone in your group.

This fundraiser takes place Friday, September 10 at the Glenn Miller
Ballroom at CU-Boulder. For more information about this event visit
the Greenwood website: http://www.greenwoodwildlife.org/fundraiser.php

Oh and btw, other items include condo stays in Puerto Vallarta, Maui
and Keystone, lunch with the acclaimed animal behaviorist Marc Bekoff
(who will be speaking at the event), a private tour of the Wild Animal
Sanctuary (with - yes - lions, tigers, and bears), a shopping spree in
downtown Longmont, an electric scooter and lots more.

A bit about Greenwood: this non-profit cares for 2,000 - 3,000 animals
each year representing over 130 different wildlife species. Most of
the patients are birds and small mammals.

[cobirds] Re: Snowy Owl

Correct me out there if I'm wrong, but I believe the street is Prairie
Vista Lane. That word "view" messed me up when I tried to plug it into
my GPS.

[cobirds] Re: Rockies hawk?

2009-07-28 Thread BCO gal

I was at that game and actually had my binoculars with me and was
watching that smaller bird from my seat (club level, right field
side). I believe the smaller bird was a grackle and was sitting in
between right and center for about a good 10 minutes (like some sort
of utility outfielder). Then, just as I pulled the binoculars away I
see this larger bird swoop down and yes, there was a collective gasp
from the crowd as the grackle escaped at the last second. Now here is
where I need help identifying the hawk since I'm still a birding
neophyte. It had a very dark head and neck. I know I've seen it before
but I just can't seem to identify it.
