[cobirds] Colorado Christmas Bird Counts Final Results (2023-2024)

2024-03-10 Thread Brandon
Hi all,

Colorado had 51 official Christmas Bird Counts conducted this past winter
(December 14-January 5). This year Colorado counts found 217 species on
count day, plus two during count week. The total birds counted was way up
from last winter (763,932) compared to (669,780) in 2022-2023 (same number
of counts). Quite a few count reached the 100+ species number on count day:
Pueblo Reservoir (129), Penrose (118), Fort Collins (112), Colorado Springs
(111), John Martin Reservoir (108), Boulder (107), North JeffCo (102),
Denver (101), and Loveland (101). Another six counts made it to the 90-99
species range. Crook in north eastern Colorado, counted the most birds
(111,274), thanks to the large number of Snow Geese). There were a lot of
highlights, Colorado's first Christmas Bird Count record, of Pomarine
Jaeger at Pueblo Reservoir, also a first for count week for any Colorado
CBC, was a Laughing Gull there as well. A few other CBRC review species
were reported: Mexican Duck, Yellow-billed Loon, Pacific Wren, and Eastern
Towhee. A surprising seven species of shorebirds were found, Dunlin on two
counts and Long-billed Dowitchers on one count. Blue-winged Teal, Turkey
Vulture, Osprey, Franklin's Gull, Chipping Sparrow are all quite rare in
winter in Colorado. There's always some interesting water birds this year:
Trumpeter and Tundra Swans, plus feral Mute Swans, White-winged Scoters,
Black Scoter, Long-tailed Ducks, Red-throated Loon and Pacific Loons,
Red-necked Grebe, Short-billed, Glaucous and Great Black-backed Gulls. It
was nice that White-tailed Ptarmigan, Dusky and Sharp-tailed Grouse,
Gunnison Sage-Grouse and Greater Prairie-Chickens were all found on a
Christmas Bird Count in Colorado this past winter. Nine species of owls
were found. All three species of regular sapsuckers were found, six
Yellow-bellied, four Red-naped, and three Williamson's. The Phoebe show was
a bit crazy, 109 Say's Phoebes, six Black Phoebes, two Eastern Phoebes!
There were 21 Winter Wrens, one Carolina Wren, eight Hermit Thrush, one
Varied Thrush, six Gray Catbirds, one Brown Thrasher, one Sage Thrasher,
and four Northern Mockingbirds. Only Steamboat Springs found Bohemian
Waxwings (19), and only Fort Collins found a Common Redpoll on count day.
Chestnut-collared and Thick-billed Longspurs were found, neither are
regular in winter in Colorado, and two Snow Buntings as well. The warblers
were surprising, eight species were found. Black-and-white, Tennessee,
Orange-crowned, Black-throated Blue, two Pines, Yellow-throated, and a
count week Common Yellowthroat, along with 236 Yellow-rumped Warblers. A
few other sparrows of note: a Field, two Fox, 23 Harris's, 10
White-throated, Savannah on three counts, 24 Lincoln's, and 29 Swamp. Three
Pine Grosbeaks wandered to Weldona-Fort Morgan on the eastern plains. My
full summary has been sent to National Audubon and will be on their website
at some point.

Thanks to all the compilers, participants, and feeder watchers who have
helped with Colorado Christmas Bird Counts this past winter, and other past
winters.

[cobirds] Colorado Christmas Bird Count update

2024-02-10 Thread Brandon
This might be a record breaking Christmas Bird Count season for Colorado,
already we are up to 209 species (usually right around 200, last year was
lower than 200). Over 650,000 birds were counted on Colorado Christmas
Bird Counts this past week. I'm waiting for a few more counts to be
entered into the CBC Website, and details for a few rarities. Thanks to
all the compilers, participants, and feeder watchers who helped on Colorado
Christmas Bird Counts this winter, and in years past. If you want to look
over any of the results, please do so.

Go to
https://netapp.audubon.org/CBCObservation/CurrentYear/ResultsByCount.aspx
Then United States
Then Colorado
and then all the Colorado CBCs will appear, click on one and check the
results.

If you see any issues, please let me know. If you helped with a Christmas
Bird Count this year, and your name isn't on the participant list, just
send me an e-mail, and I'll get you added.

Hopefully all the results will be entered by the end of February, and I
will be finished reviewing all the results by early April.

[cobirds] Pueblo birds on 1/25

2024-01-25 Thread Brandon
Van Truan and I birded Pueblo Reservoir this afternoon. We started this
morning at Cattail Crossing Pond in Pueblo West, where the possible Mexican
Duck continues.

We then enjoyed the goose show in Colorado Springs, El Paso County, saw the
Black Brant, Greater White-fronted Goose, Snow Goose, Ross's Goose, and a
couple hybrid geese too. Along with other Colorado Springs birders, we saw
a female Williamson's Sapsucker (which turned out to be the only Sapsucker
we saw today). We decided to go to Canon City and try for Sapsuckers and
other birds, and stuck out. We forgot to go to one of the Sapsuckers
places, which we found out when we got home, did have sapsuckers today. Oh
well.

We then birded Pueblo Reservoir, where our luck changed, saw the continuing
Yellow-billed Loon (note this bird has a yellow upturned bill and is tan
colored), 7 Common Loons (which are not the same color as the Yellow-billed
Loon), Red-necked Grebe, Pacific Loon, Field Sparrow, Great Black-backed,
several Lesser Black-backed Gulls, Iceland (Thayer's) Gull, Double-crested
Cormorant. We saw a hybrid gull, which may be a Glaucous-winged x Herring
Gull. It has a two toned bill, that looks like a Glaucous Gull, though the
wing tips look more like Glaucous-winged. There are photos on the ebird
checklist.

Always fun to bird with my uncle, and see some fun birds.

Good birding,

[cobirds] Pueblo birds 1/22

2024-01-22 Thread Brandon
The weather was finally nice around here, and not too cold. Pueblo
Reservoir was windless this morning, so scoping the lake was nice.
Highlights on Pueblo Reservoir today: YELLOW-BILLED LOON, a Pacific Loon, 3
Common Loons, Red-necked Grebe, Lesser Black-backed, Iceland (Thayer's),
California Gulls (and many Ring-billed and Herring), other birders saw the
Great Black-backed Gull that avoided me today. A land bird surprise, was a
Field Sparrow that Al Garner and I saw with some American Tree Sparrows,
and seen by many other birders. Below the dam, there was an immature
Black-crowned Night-Heron.

[cobirds] Christmas Bird Counts tomorrow (29 Dec 2023)

2023-12-28 Thread Brandon
There's two Christmas Bird Counts tomorrow in southern Pueblo County and in
Huerfano County. If you want to come and help these counts that don't have
a lot of observers usually. Here are the details.

*Lake Isabel CBC:*
Meet at 8am at the dam at Lake Beckwith in Colorado City in Pueblo County,
to help with the southern half of the circle (Colorado City, Rye, and San
Isabel areas). If you have bird feeders and want to be a feeder watcher,
that is also possible.

*Spanish Peaks CBC:*
Meet at 8am at the La Veta Town Park, in La Veta, Huerfano County. This
circle includes La Veta and Cuchara.

[cobirds] Warblers in Canon City, Fremont County 17 Dec 2023

2023-12-17 Thread Brandon
I helped count birds for the Penrose Christmas Bird Count today, and my
area produced a BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER (Pueblo area's first winter
sighting), and a male BLACK-THROATED BLUE WARBLER. Both were from the
Sells to Raynolds portion of the Canon City Riverwalk, Fremont County.
There's certainly been quite a few December warbler this year, and some are
being found on Christmas Bird Counts, which is exciting.

Since I missed seeing the Yellow-billed Loon yesterday at Pueblo Reservoir,
I'll try tomorrow. Sounds like it and the Pomarine Jaeger were seen by
lots of people at Pueblo Reservoir, Pueblo County, today.

[cobirds] Christmas Bird Counts begin tomorrow

2023-12-13 Thread Brandon
Hi all,

We have over 50 Colorado Christmas Bird Counts scheduled around the state
from 14 December 2023 to 5 January 2024. Colorado's 2023-24 Christmas Bird
Counts has already started pretty well, with Count Week birds (species that
are missed on count day, and seen within a circle three days before or
after count day, will go on the list). I know Fountain Creek, Denver, and
Pueblo Reservoir have some nice count week species already, hopefully those
rarities will turn up on count day too. You can read how Christmas Bird
Counts work, and you can find a circle, and contact the compiler, to see
what area you can help with.

Good luck everyone, on this year's Colorado Christmas Bird Counts.

Re: [cobirds] Yellow-throated Warbler - El Paso County 11/21

2023-11-21 Thread Brandon
That sighting was on 24 October 2023. Since Fountain Creek Regional Park
is a popular birding location, that bird may have been different then this
one, since there weren't any sightings between Oct 24th and Nov 19th. If
the sighting from 24 October 2023, was right at the nature center too, then
maybe it would be the same bird, if it was somewhere else in park, then
maybe not the same bird. It is interesting that this bird has the yellow
lores, since all the photos I've taken of Yellow-throated Warblers in
Colorado, haven't had any yellow on the lores like this bird.

[cobirds] Yellow-throated Warbler - El Paso County 11/21

2023-11-21 Thread Brandon
A Yellow-throated Warbler was found over the weekend at Fountain Creek
Regional Park, El Paso County. I got photos today, and I see it has yellow
above the eyes. Usually I see the all white ones in Colorado. I'm not
sure how often Colorado gets the yellow lored ones. I think e-bird has
choices for this, I think it might work for Yellow-throated Warbler
(dominica/stoddardi).
Hopefully someone can confirm if that is what this bird is, as I think
Yellow-throated Warbler *(**albilora) *is the all white lored ones.

A few bird highlights this morning around Valco Ponds in Pueblo County, a
Winter Wren and latish Blue-gray Gnatcatcher. A bobcat eating a fox
squirrel was interesting too.

I looked at my photos of that Sandwich Tern, Colorado's only state record,
and I see the differences between the American and Eurasian subspecies.
that Sibley's article shows well. I agree the Colorado bird would be the
Eurasian subspecies, very interesting! We do get some crazy birds in
Colorado.

[cobirds] Limpkin update

2023-07-05 Thread Brandon
Has anyone seen the Limpkin since yesterday, 4 July in the morning? Seems
like no ebird reports at all after that. Some people were at Ramah SWA
this morning, and didn't see it. It seems like it can be hard to find when
it is hot in the middle of the day. No sightings this morning, is
interesting. There was cold front last night, and chilly today, perhaps it
moved on or hiding. If anyone sees it or any other Limpkins, please report
them. Colorado may well get more of them. Last summer, after Kansas got
the first one, several more showed up. Congrats to everyone who got to see
this amazing 1st state record, I believe the most westerly sighting of
Limpkin anywhere in the United States.

[cobirds] Pueblo birds June 17th

2023-06-17 Thread Brandon
Pueblo City Park is getting some interesting birds for mid June.

Adult Yellow-crowned Night-Heron found on June 15th by Mark Oreskovich at
Lake Joy in Pueblo City Park, he saw it again on June 16th. Other birders
saw it this morning at the pond east of the Pueblo Zoo. It flew east, not
sure where it goes, as it isn't in Pueblo City Park most of the day,
usually early in the morning, maybe later in the day too.

Rare for summer, both a Cackling Goose and a Greater White-fronted Goose
are still hanging out today, both present since May.

Green Herons bred successfully, four fledged young and adults are around.

I heard a singing Parula on June 15th, finally saw it today, and it is a
Northern Parula.

A Red-eyed Vireo has been singing since mid May in the park.

A pair Mississippi Kites are in the park, which is normal and we're seen
today.

Mark Yaeger found a female Summer Tanager on June 16th and last week Evan
Carlson photographed a male Rose-breasted Grosbeak in Pueblo City Park.

At Valco Ponds in Pueblo, singing Red-eyed Vireo there as well and a pair
of Indigo Buntings today on June 17th.

[cobirds] Arctic Loon update for June 6th

2023-06-06 Thread Brandon
It appears the Arctic Loon was present this morning until 8:30 am, and then
not seen after that. Who knows where it flew off to, so probably watch all
other reservoirs in Colorado for it the next few days. It stayed Friday to
Tuesday morning, so not bad for lots of people to see it.

[cobirds] Crowley County 5/31

2023-05-31 Thread Brandon
Van Truan and I saw a few interesting late migrants and rarities in Crowley
County this afternoon (31 May). A Laughing Gull was at Lake Henry, and a
Wood Thrush, Summer Tanager, and adult male Indigo Bunting at Olney
Springs. Ordway Reservoir had water in it again, it was dry last fall when
I was there, a Swainson's Thrush was the only late migrant there. There
was a lot of water at both Lake Henry and Lake Meredith, without much
shorebird habitat (also lots of campers). Lake Cheraw in Otero County, had
a late migrant Lesser Yellowlegs.

Re: [cobirds] Am. Redstart songs

2023-05-30 Thread Brandon
I agree with American Redstart songs sounding like various other warbler
species quite often. I've heard them singing in the east, and I think they
could be something else, and they turn out to be American Redstart quite
often. The Merlin App gets confused with American Redstarts too, I have
heard people have recorded an American Redstart that they are looking at
singing on their Merlin App, it has said it was a different species, like
Black-and-white. Even if Merlin hears something, it is a good idea to try
to see the bird, since it isn't always right. Also, Merlin App has issues
with Indigo and Lazuli Buntings it seems like. I have recorded a Lazuli
Bunting on Merlin, though it says it is an Indigo Bunting. I am sure there
are lots of other problem songs, and of course Northern Mockingbirds doing
a lot of different birds.

[cobirds] Re: Acadian Flycatcher update

2023-05-23 Thread Brandon
No sightings of 2nd ever Acadian Flycatcher for Colorado today, maybe 30
birders were able to see it yesterday, some drove down from Fort Collins,
Boulder, Denver, etc.

The ranch was a bit quieter for migrants today. The singing male Hooded
Warbler, an Ovenbird, and Veery on the El Paso County side were the best
things. Very slow today at Headquarters Wiilows and Rose Pond. Sometimes
the last week of May at Chico Basin Ranch can still produce rare birds,
though some days can be very slow like today. It has been a good week for
me at Chico, with over 20 species of warblers and a good number vireos,
among other birds from May 14-23. I may only get back out there a couple
more times before June. Luckily banding will be going on into early June
this year, so there may be some more interesting birds being banded in the
coming days hopefully.

[cobirds] Chico Basin Ranch birding on May 14th

2023-05-14 Thread Brandon
After being out of the state for a week, I got back to birding in Colorado
a bit today.

The Pueblo County side of Chico Basin Ranch (Headquarters and Rose Pond),
male Black-throated Blue Warbler, Nashville Warbler, four Northern
Waterthrush, American Redstart, Cassin's Vireo, singing Least Flycatchers.

On the El Paso County side of ranch (banding station), singing male Hooded
Warbler, male Magnolia Warbler, male Black-throated Gray Warbler, Northern
Waterthrush.

I ended with 13 species of warblers there today.

Just a reminder, any birders going to Chico Basin Ranch are required to pay
$15 per person to visit the ranch each day they go there. Most of us local
birders have paid the annual fee of $125. I am not sure if everyone who
was out there today from out of town, signed in and paid. If you aren't
planning to pay, then please don't go there. The people not paying, may
ruin the birding for us local birders who go there often.

Re: [cobirds] Historical perspective on Bohemians?

2023-01-31 Thread Brandon
In Southern Colorado, the last eruption of Bohemian Waxwings was in
February 2005, there were 3,000+ around Lathrop State Park, Huerfano
County. Between 2005 and 2022, I only saw Bohemian Waxwings in Colorado in
2013 in Fremont County, a small number.

Colorado Christmas Bird Counts this winter, found some Bohemian Waxwings,
though the big numbers were mostly found after the Christmas Bird Count
season was over. Since not all the results are in yet, I don't know how
many counts found them, and how many.

Though so far, six counts found them, with a total of 250 birds.

[cobirds] Early Cinnamon Teal in Pueblo 1/27

2023-01-27 Thread Brandon
Chris Knight and I saw an early spring migrant male Cinnamon Teal at the
South Shore Marina at Pueblo Reservoir, Pueblo County mid-day today. It
was in the cove south of the South Marina with mostly Green-winged Teal. I
don't remember seeing one this early in the year in Pueblo County before.
I know they are regular starting in early February. Earlier this morning,
saw an adult Short-billed Gull on the Arkansas River, just west of the
footbridge, west of Runyon Lake in Pueblo County, seen with Chris Knight
and Al Garner. There seems to be maybe 3 or 4 Short-billed Gulls around
here this winter, at least 2 adults and younger one around Pueblo Reservoir
as well.

The Bohemian Waxwing invasion hasn't really happened in Pueblo County, as
far as I know. Early in January, Chris Knight saw a little flock of 12
west of the Pueblo Nature Center, since then just lots of Cedar Waxwings in
that area. Luckily, last Sunday, I got up to El Paso County, and Kara
Carragher and I saw two in Pleasant Valley and then a flock of 98 in a park
in Manitou Springs. Looks like more Arctic air coming soon, so maybe
Pueblo will get going with the Bohemian Waxwing invasion too.

Good birding,

[cobirds] Colorado Christmas Bird Count reviewing

2023-01-18 Thread Brandon
Hi all,

I am currently reviewing the 50 some Colorado Christmas Bird Counts that
were held around the state this past winter. Many counts found
rarities for their count (or during count week), if you happened to
photograph any of them, you can copy your ebird checklist (that shows the
photos), so I can put the comment (ph = photographed on the CBC Website for
that count for the specific species). Or you can email the photo, and let
me know what count it was on, and that will work too. I am emailing
compilers, if I am getting a different species total, from what they
reported and asking for documentation for certain species. All Colorado
Bird Records Committee review species, always require documentation to be
submitted to the Colorado Bird Records Committee, when found on Colorado
Christmas Bird Counts. So far, from the Christmas Counts submitted and
completed on the CBC Website, only the following Colorado Bird Record
Committee have been reported: Eurasian Wigeon, Mallard (Mexican) Duck, and
Purple Finch. I always require details on all Turkey Vultures and Chipping
Sparrow sightings on any Colorado CBC (waiting for details on those now).
I'm also asking for details on a few sapsuckers depending on which count
they were found, since Red-naped and Yellow-bellied could be
misidentified. You all are welcome to look over Colorado CBC Results from
this winter, on the CBC Website, and let me know, if you see any issues
with any of the results. I will be reviewing Colorado Christmas Bird
Counts, until the end of March, all compilers *MUST *have their results
entered into the CBC Website by the end of February, though *WAY *before
that is always helpful.

A big thanks to all the compilers, participants, and feeder watchers who
make Christmas Bird Counts a success in Colorado each winter.

[cobirds] Pueblo birds this week

2023-01-14 Thread Brandon
Since I was out if the state the first week of the year, I finally got to
bird around Pueblo this week. Quite a few rarities around Lake Pueblo
State Park this week. My highlights: The Gull show, first year
Glaucous-winged Gull (also a hybrid Glaucous-winged x Herring Gull
continues since December), first or second year Glaucous Gull, at least one
adult Short-billed Gull, many Iceland (Thayer's) Gulls, Lesser Black-backed
Gulls, and an adult Great Black-backed Gull. Three species of Loons,
several Commons, 1 Pacific and 1 Red-throated. Six species of Grebes have
been seen, 1 Red-necked and 2 Clark's Grebes, many Horned, Eared, Western,
Pied-billed. One Double-crested Cormorant, a White-winged Scoter,
Long-tailed Duck, and male Barrow's Goldeneye. For passerines this week,
highlights were Winter Wren, Gray Catbird, Harris's, White-throated and
Swamp Sparrows. Out of the Pueblo Reservoir CBC circle, I saw the
continuing Yellow-bellied Sapsucker and Golden-crowned Kinglet in Blende,
and Brown-headed Cowbird in Vineland. I am nearly at 100 bird species in
Pueblo County this year, since Sunday late afternoon.

2022 at Pueblo Reservoir, flying around in the SE corner of Pueblo
Reservoir. I remember a late Tree Swallow along the Arkansas River at
Valco Pond a long time that was around for a few days. We haven't had any
Swallow on any of our local Christmas Bird Counts down here, just
White-throated Swifts one year.

[cobirds] Pueblo Reservoir Nov 19

2022-11-19 Thread Brandon
Chris Knight and I scoped Pueblo Reservoir this afternoon, hoping for lost
eiders. Duck numbers on the Reservoir seemed pretty low, because of
hunting, the smarter ducks know it is more safe to hang out on the various
ponds or along the river instead of the Reservoir. Today's highlights,
adult Short-billed Gull, juvenile Iceland (Thayer's) Gulls near South Shore
Marina, an adult a Lesser Black-backed Gull at North Shore Marina, and two
Red-necked Grebes (one off West Fishing Road and one off Hobie Cat Road).
Hundreds of Western/Clark's Grebes, fewer Eared, Horned, and Pied-billed
Grebes. About 8 Common Loons and many Bonaparte's Gulls around the
Reservoir.

[cobirds] Pueblo birds 11/6-7

2022-11-07 Thread Brandon
Quite a few highlights the last couple of days in Pueblo.

Chris Knight found a Sedge Wren at Valco Ponds on Nov 6th, also Swamp
Sparrows continue at Valco Ponds as well. Adult Great Black-backed Gull is
back again, at South Shore Marina at Pueblo Reservoir, seen on Nov 6th and
7th. Chris and I found a female Hooded Warbler on the Rock Canyon side of
the river, below the dam, on Nov 7th, other highlights in this area, two
Dunlin, Lesser Black-backed Gull, Harris's Sparrow, Common Yellowthroat,
Golden-crowned Kinglet, Say's Phoebe, and Ladder-backed Woodpecker.
Hopefully there are more surprises along the Arkansas River, in Pueblo.
November and December can be pretty exciting around here.

[cobirds] Two Philadelphia Vireos Crowley Co. 8 October

2022-10-08 Thread Brandon
Two Philadelphia Vireos were at Ordway Reservoir today (both all bright
yellow underneath and seen in same tree), also continuing Cassin's Vireo,
Olive-sided Flycatcher, 2 White-throated Sparrows, plus Western Tanager and
Gray Catbird, it appears a Warbling Vireo was photographed after we left
there.

While scoping a bunch of dowitchers on the north side of Lake Meredith this
afternoon, Kara and I heard and saw briefly a flyover Sprague's Pipit.

Lake Henry had some shorebirds in the morning, though when we returned
around noon, there was a lot less shorebirds. No sign of the Purple
Sandpiper.

Sandhill Cranes were heard and seen pretty much all day in Crowley County
for us.

Good birding,

[cobirds] West Slope Sept 26th

2022-09-27 Thread Brandon
The Thick-billed Kingbird was still calling a lot and hanging out near
Mack, Mesa County yesterday (26 September) at the usual location, from
around 9-11am (it was nice to see a few familiar faces), and it sounds like
it's still around later too. It seems to be hanging around the house, we
could see it with the scope well, sitting on branches in the cottonwoods,
it never came close to the road when I was there. Thanks to everyone for
continuingly updating sightings about this major Colorado rarity. It was
fun to see this species in Colorado, after looking all morning back in 1992
at Waterton Canyon, for the one there the afternoon before.

Another highlight, were found juvenile Sabine's Gulls at the Rifle Airport
ponds along I-70 in Garfield County. The fall colors around Aspen and
Independence Pass were very nice on the way back. Be alert to delays for
road work in Aspen though.

Re: [cobirds] TBKI MESA

2022-09-22 Thread Brandon
When cobirds started and for many years after, rare birds in Colorado were
always posted right away on cobirds. Now it is best to have hourly ebird
alerts for Colorado coming to your email to hear about more rarities. This
rarity is Colorado's 4th ever Thick-billed Kingbird found near Mack, by
Grand Junction area birders yesterday morning and seen by many western
slope birders throughout the day yesterday.

Yesterday, six juvenile Sabine's Gulls were off West Fishing Road at Pueblo
Reservoir, Pueblo County, also a Common Tern, with Forster's and Black

[cobirds] Worm-eating Warbler - Pueblo Co. 9/15

2022-09-15 Thread Brandon
While birding at the Chico Basin Ranch ($15 per person to visit), Pueblo
County at the Headquarters Willows, I spotted a Worm-eating Warbler around
10am this morning. At least two other birders Jim Merritt and John Maynard
also got views of it. It was quite hard to see in willows. Worm-eating
Warbler isn't as regular in the fall, as they are in the spring.

Good birding,

[cobirds] New Colorado species

2022-08-03 Thread Brandon
The AOU just announced the split of Eastern Meadowlark into two species.
Colorado has had both, the regular Eastern Meadowlark and the new
Chihuahuan Meadowlark. I don't know if any Colorado county has records of
both. I have Chihuahuan in Pueblo and Baca Counties, and Eastern in
Fremont, Chaffee, and Huerfano Counties. Since Eastern Meadowlark is on
the CBRC review list, so hopefully the CBRC will figure out how many
accepted records there are for each species.

A correction, the other sightings for Dickcissels in Custer County are from
Wetmore, most years they are there. I haven't had any on my property in
the Wet Mountains.

I saw and heard two Dickcissels, near Rye in Pueblo County this morning,
near the intersection of Hwy 165 and the lowe part of Old Lake Isabel Road,
there were a long Old Lake Isabel Road, very close to Hwy 165.

[cobirds] Pueblo birds 6/1

2022-06-01 Thread Brandon
The first day of the summer season was pretty exciting in Pueblo. Several
birders were out and about.

Mark Yaeger found a *Purple Martin* at Runyon Lake, on a telephone wire in
the parking lot on the north side. Four other Pueblo birders were able to
see it, before it flew south. Many photos were taken. Van Truan and I
walked around the lake, after seeing the martin, and saw and heard an*
Alder Flycatcher* on the south side of the lake, by the small pond.

Ed Landi found an adult *Yellow-crowned Night-Heron* at Pueblo City Park,
on the island at Lake Joy. I believe this bird was seen yesterday as well,
so hopefully it will hang around.

Earlier in the morning, I had the singing Red-eyed Vireo on the west side
of Pueblo City Park and another one singing in the eastern part of the
Osprey Picnic Area, in Rock Canyon, below Pueblo Reservoir dam. Both of
these birds have been around since May. I scoped the Pueblo West Gravel
Pit, there were over 20 White-rumped Sandpipers, 2 breeding plumage Horned
Grebes, four Lesser Scaup, and five Hooded Mergansers.

Other migrants that should be in the mountains that were around Pueblo
today: Yellow-rumped (Audubon's) Warbler, MacGillivray's Warbler, Western
Tanagers, Lincoln's Sparrows, Swainson's Thrush, lots of Violet-green
Swallows, among other things. Singing Willow Flycatchers were around
Runyon Lake as well.

[cobirds] Pueblo County: Arctic Tern and Surf Scoter 5/28

2022-05-28 Thread Brandon
I went over to Swallows State Wildlife Area, at the end of Swallows Road on
extreme West end of Pueblo Reservoir, Pueblo County this morning. There
was an adult Arctic Tern flying around, and a male Surf Scoter, was near a
male Canvasback, and two Great Egrets are also present. I scoped from the
Swallows Cemetery. Since this is a State Wildlife Area, you need a SWA
pass or Fish Licence.

[cobirds] Pueblo weather

2022-05-22 Thread Brandon
The weather this weekend, for the Colorado Field Ornithologists Convention
in Pueblo, certainly wasn't what I expected. I have never remembered snow
in Pueblo this late in May ever. Even though some trips got cancelled or
rerouted, (mostly because of dirt roads that are very bad when wet), I
still think lots of bird species were found. I hope everyone got to see
some birds they wanted to see and meet new people and still had a
good time. Hopefully the next convention in Pueblo, will not have so many
weather issues. My field trips were interesting, Friday at Chico Basin
Ranch was fine, lots of Swainson's Thrushes, and it was very cold.
Saturday morning, we birded in snow in Pueblo, it was very quiet (had to
save a few very wet Swallows that couldn't fly), it got better in the
afternoon. Sunday were rerouted and birded Pueblo again, and saw lots of
birds, 10 species of shorebirds we're pretty nice for Pueblo.

Thanks to CFO for the award they gave to my uncle Van Truan, at the banquet
on Saturday night. As some of you know, Van is why I became a birder. He
took me out at age six back early 1980s and got me interested in the
outdoors and nature. I would not have become interested in birds, if it
wasn't for my uncle Van. I overheard people saying, they really enjoyed
his all day trip he lead on Friday during the convention.

Nice to see everyone in Pueblo, hopefully better weather for your next
visit here.

[cobirds] COMMON GALLINULE in El Paso County 4/19

2022-04-19 Thread Brandon
It seems like some birders don't post much about rare birds in Colorado on
cobirds, as much as they used to. Hopefully Colorado Bird Records
Committee Review species at least get posted more often. Tanja Britton
found a COMMON GALLINULE today (19 April 2022) at Cross Creek Regional Park
in Fountain, El Paso County. The bird was present all day, hopefully it
hangs around. View from the south side of the pond, looking across the
pond to the north. It comes in and out of the reeds. Since, there's
only 12 accepted records for Colorado, and none in El Paso County, at least
a few people who saw it, and photographed it today, did document it for the
Colorado Birds Records Committee. Remember to document any CBRC review
species that you see in Colorado.

[cobirds] Pueblo birds 4/9

2022-04-09 Thread Brandon
A couple of surprises this morning, there was a female Yellow-bellied
Sapsucker at Valco Ponds in Pueblo, it was between pond 4 and 5. The other
highlight was a Pectoral Sandpiper, east of Pueblo Reservoir dam, at the
spillway, just below the dam, in the rocks. All six normal swallows have
been around this past week in Pueblo. It sounds like some of the grouse
tours have been finding all four species of loons at Pueblo Reservoir this
week, one Yellow-billed, one Red-throated, one Pacific, and several
Commons, usually seen from the middle of the reservoir east to the dam.
Look from the Sailboard launching area, or N-1 Road on the top of the dam,
or maybe from North Picnic Road/Juniper Breaks Campground, or from the SE
portion of the reservoir.

Good birding,

[cobirds] Loons at Pueblo Reservoir, Pueblo Co.

2022-04-04 Thread Brandon
I ran into a grouse tour this morning at Pueblo Reservoir at the Sailboard
launching area, Pueblo County, and we saw a YELLOW-BILLED LOON, a Pacific
and Common Loons. The Red-throated Loon was still around over the weekend
too. Down at the Gravel Pit, there were hundreds of swallows of five
species (couldn't find a Bank), also American Avocet and Lesser Yellowlegs,
and still many ducks and gulls. I saw my first of the spring Chipping
Sparrow, below Pueblo Reservoir dam this morning, as well.

Good birding,

[cobirds] Re: Pine Warbler Pueblo Co.

2022-03-26 Thread Brandon
The male Pine Warbler is still at Rose Pond on the Pueblo County side of
Chico Basin Ranch this morning. Just a reminder, since it is spring, please
remember to sign in at Headquarters first, sign the liability waiver, and
pay $15 per person if visiting Chico Basin Ranch. The warbler was found by
Tanja Britton, and is the 38th species of warbler for the ranch and bird
species #351! There are new checklists at the sign in kisok that Bill
Maynard updates annually, if you happen to find something not on the
checklist, please let us know and try to get a photo of the bird.

Thanks,

An adult Harris's Hawk was photographed in Pueblo West (north of Hwy 50),

[cobirds] Colorado Christmas Bird Count Results

2022-02-27 Thread Brandon
All the Colorado CBC Results are in for this past winter (December
14-January 5), *204 bird species *found on the 53 counts that were held,
plus four Count Week only species. I have written my summary already, and
there were some interesting birds for sure, eastern warblers, and other
things. Maybe the most interesting thing, there was only one Golden-crowned
Kinglet found on a Colorado CBC this year! A summary with most of the
results will be in the Colorado Birds, the Journal of the Colorado Field
Ornithologists, in the near future, and the full summary will be on the
Christmas Bird Count website. If you want to see a copy of the summary of
highlights and high counts for each species in the state on Colorado
Christmas Bird Counts, just email me.

[cobirds] Eurasian Wigeon in Pueblo 2/26

2022-02-26 Thread Brandon
Roger Massey found a male *Eurasian Wigeon *(a CBRC review species) at
Valco Pond #4, the pond directly north of the Chain of Lakes Parking lot
along Hwy 96, in Pueblo. This parking lot is part of Lake Pueblo State
Park, so a park pass is required to park there. Many birders were able to
see it late morning into the afternoon and many photos were taken. This is
the same pond, a male Eurasian Wigeon (likely the same bird), was seen in
December (first seen on the Pueblo Reservoir CBC on December 18th, by Chris
Knight), and probably the same bird that was seen in Canon City in late
December and in early January. Surprisingly with the cold air down here,
the ponds were mostly open, and not frozen.

Good birding,

Re: [cobirds] Snowy Owl/Weld

2022-02-24 Thread Brandon
It doesn't seem like any of the five Snowy Owls this winter in Colorado,
stuck around for more than one day (one of the five was found dead, the
four alive ones, were one day wonders as far as I know). As far as I know,
Snowy Owl is a CBRC review species throughout the state, so if you are
lucky to find one, make sure to document it for the Colorado Birds Records
Committee, if even no one else gets to see them.

Nearly all the Christmas Bird Count Results are in, and a summary will be
in Colorado Birds, the Journal of the Colorado Field Ornithologists for the
counts that got their data in early enough (next year Colorado Christmas
Bird Count compilers will be asked to enter all their results by February
1st (so that I can get a summary in Colorado Birds with all the counts
included). My summary on the CBC Website, will be sent to National
Audubon, as soon as all the counts are submitted, by the end of the month.

[cobirds] Pueblo Reservoir, Pueblo Co. 2/15

2022-02-15 Thread Brandon
Nothing new to report, only one Yellow-billed Loon (not sure where the
other one went), one Red-throated Loon, two Red-necked Grebes, seven Common
Loons, and the adult Great Black-backed Gull all continue at Pueblo
Reservoir, Pueblo County, this morning. Calm and cloudy conditions out on
Pueblo Reservoir this morning, and there was no sign of the Pacific Loon
that has been present most of the winter.

Walked around Pueblo City Park today too, and couldn't find the juvenile
Northern Goshawk, the juvenile and adult female Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers,
the male Red-naped Sapsucker, or the Pygmy Nuthatches which were all seen
last week (9 February 2022). Went to Mountain View Cemetery in Pueblo
this morning as well, there were quite a few Yellow-rumped Warblers, the
most I've seen this winter, over ten of them, and a Red-breasted Nuthatch,
which have been pretty hard to find in Pueblo this winter.

[cobirds] Rufous-backed Robin update

2022-02-09 Thread Brandon
It sounds like the last sighting for the Rufous-backed Robin at Denny Lake
in Cortez, Montezuma County is Monday 7 February 2022. Coen and Brenda
couldn't find it on 8 or 9 February 2022. If it has really departed the
area, it did stay quite awhile for many people to see this amazing first
state record for Colorado. First found on 18 January 2022 by Coen Dexter
and Brenda Wright and seen every day through 7 February 2022. Congrats
again to them for finding this first state record and helping many people
see it. Hopefully everyone who saw it has submitted their record on it for
the Colorado Birds Records Committee, so it will be added to the official
Colorado State List.

[cobirds] Colorado Christmas Bird Count results so far

2022-01-18 Thread Brandon
So far, with results from 32 Colorado Christmas Bird Counts entered into
the CBC Website we have 193 count day species, and three others for count
week only. I think we are certainly on the way to 200+ species again this
year, with many count results still coming in.

To see results from any count, go to
https://netapp.audubon.org/CBCObservation/CurrentYear/ResultsByCount.aspx
then click on Country and enter Unitied States, and then click on State and
enter Colorado, and all the counts will come up.

If you see any errors on any counts from Colorado from this winter, please
let me know, so I look into them. I haven't actually counted all the
species reported, for each count yet, if I get a different total, than what
is being reported, I will be contacting compilers, to see if something is
missing on the list, as sometimes the number entered, doesn't save, so the
species total reported can be different, than what is on the CBC website.
