[cobirds] New Yard Birds

2022-08-31 Thread Kelly Ormesher
Three weeks ago, my husband and I made the move from Colorado to Missouri.
During the ten years we lived in Longmont, I had a life list of 91 birds
for our home. I am missing my morning coffee on the back patio where we
would listen and watch as birds visited our garden and made flyovers on
their way to Union Reservoir and various ponds. Migration always brought
some new visitors which were wonderful to experience.

Blue Jays, European Starlings, House Sparrows, and Eurasian-collared Doves
are also regular visitors here. Red-bellied and Red-headed Woodpeckers have
replaced visits from Downy Woodpeckers and Northern Flickers. Ruby-throated
Hummingbirds and Northern Cardinals are abundant at my feeders. Sunrise and
sunset flights by Chimney Swifts are a nice daily addition.

New migrants are arriving and I'm looking forward to exploring and
branching out as we settle into our new home on Stockton Lake. Colorado
calls to me and I know I will return a couple of times a year to visit and
bird my favorite areas.

Cheers,
Kelly Ormesher

[cobirds] Crow Valley Campground

2022-05-04 Thread KELLY ORMESHER
With the return of the wet, cool weather I decided to head back to Crow Valley.
Lots of bird activity this morning starting with a large mixed flock of
sparrows at the entrance. There were also a substantial number of House Wrens,
Orange-crowned Warblers, and Spotted Towhees. I counted 14 SPTO in foraging in
one sport along the Crow Creek.

The Ash-throated Flycatcher continues in the trees to the west side of the
group site. It stays pretty high in the trees.

Two nice finds this morning were a male Common Yellow Throat and Plumbeous
Vireo.

[cobirds] Weld County Birds

2022-05-02 Thread KELLY ORMESHER
Hi All,

Today I headed out to Weld County on a rainy/snowy and windy day. In one week,
there's a noticeable increase in birds. The Lark Buntings, Lark Sparrows, and
Bullock's Orioles have returned. Interestingly, as I drove a stretch along
CR89, I noticed three Swainson's Hawks in less than 1/4 mile that were all
standing on the ground, tucked in behind yucca plants getting some protection
from the wind and rain.

At Crow Valley, I encountered an Ash-throated Flycatcher along Crow Creek south
of the group picnic area. I also found a Least Flycatcher in the Yellow Current
shrubs along with three Blue-gray Gnatcatchers. An Eastern Bluebird has
returned along with a Brown Thrasher.

Norma's Grove had at least seven Swainson's Thrushes and a great variety of
sparrows.

Happy birding,
Kelly Ormesher

[cobirds] Pine Warbler

2022-03-26 Thread Kelly Ormesher
On my home from birding in Pueblo yesterday, I stopped at Chico Basin
Ranch. I ran into a couple of other birders who told me about the Pine
Warbler hanging out at Rose Pond. It's a male foraging along the south
shore. About 8 birders arrived as I was leaving. Hopefully, it continues
today.

[cobirds] Re: A situation (Boulder)

2022-03-03 Thread KELLY ORMESHER
Hi David,

I often walk Old Saint Vrain Road to enjoy the birds and beauty. I was there
yesterday afternoon and was surprised not only by the number of people, but all
the cars parked along both sides of the road. This has not been my experience
in the past and I decided to move on. The group was a mix of birders and
photographers. As I left, a local officer was arriving, so someone did call
from the neighborhood.

Although this is a popular spot, the people I meet are usually friendly and
respectful to property and wildlife. As I've already mentioned, this was the
first experience of this kind and like Eric, I love this location and would
also hate to see the loss of access.

Subject: [cobirds] A situation (Boulder)

It has come to my attention that photographers, some of whom may be birders,
are causing a problem west of Lyons in their lust for a pygmy-owl. At the risk
of pissing some of you off, and causing even more people to seek this bird by
publicizing it, I ask for restraint. The person who called me is not a birder
but a guy I used to work with who knows I am into birds. He owns property
bordering Route 7 w of town where he says 16 cars full of loud-talking people
pointing big cameras, rutting the right-of-way that he maintains are back again
today, the way they have been in numbers for days (weeks?). He is upset and I
don't blame him. He says that whoever these people are, they don't really care
about the bird, that they act very entitled, that this is all just about
getting the photo and social. In short these sorts of situations give birders
a black eye and they are becoming more commonplace. If anyone reading this
knows about the situation first hand, has been there, has a comment or rebuttal
I can pass on to my friend, I am all ears. My friend hasn't called the sheriff
yet but is about to and it makes me sad to think "we" might have caused a
reasonable person with deep sentiments for conservation and the natural world
to be so upset.

[cobirds] Surprise Visit

2022-01-15 Thread Kelly Ormesher
Good morning,

While enjoying my morning watching the birds visit the feeders, I had a
surprise visit from a very late Yellow-rumped Warbler (Myrtle). The female
arrived with a large flock of mixed birds for a brief visit before flying
off. With my bins, I could clearly see her bright yellow side patches and
rump, streaking on the flanks, and pale throat. I was hoping she would stay
around long enough to take a photo.

Cheers,
Kelly Ormesher

[cobirds] Birding With Grandkids

2022-01-13 Thread Kelly Ormesher
Apologies for the YCNH reported today. I took my grandkids for a walk along
the South Platte River around 88th and we birding along the way, that is I
was birding along the way. I was definitely keeping better track of the
kids than I was keeping track of selecting the right species, which were
BCNH. Thanks to Kathy Holland for shooting me a message about the mistake!

It was a beautiful day and we enjoyed the walk. My six year old grandson is
interested in birds and it's never to soon to share the love of birding.

[cobirds] Tennessee Warbler

2021-11-01 Thread KELLY ORMESHER
This afternoon (4:15ish) while looking for the Black-throated Green Warbler,
Adrian Lakin and I saw a Tennessee Warbler. The bird was in the block to the
northeast side of the cemetery. Adrian first spotted the bird in the Honey
Locust tree behind the chicken pen on the south side of the north alley. We got
good looks before the bird flew south from us to the giant beech tree in the
middle of the block. We were unable to relocate the bird.

Adrian also got to see the Black-throated Green, but unfortunately, I missed it.

I spotted a Little Blue Heron on my way into Jackson Lake SP in Morgan County this morning. It was located in the Andrink Pond on the left side of the road immediately after crossing the inlet canal. My husband and I got great looks. It was hunting along with a GBHE, SNEG, and GREG. Unfortunately, the only photo I took was with my phone as I forgot my photo card at home. I was there on Saturday and same as Linda said - a few puddles but otherwise
fine. I think we saw a road grader out there, too, so they may have worked on
some of them on Saturday, not sure. But they were in pretty good condition as
