[cobirds] Bohemian Waxwings continue - El Paso, County

2023-01-03 Thread Kip Miller
Bohemian Waxwings have been showing nicely and enjoyed by many the past two
days in Colorado Springs since their discovery by Steve Getty along South
Cheyenne Canyon Road near the Starsmore Discovery Center. At least 40 were
present this afternoon, along with a few Cedar Waxwings.

I watched them for over an hour late in late afternoon today and would
guess they'll stick around as long as the buckthorn berries they've been
feeding on remain present. (There were still many berries this afternoon.)

GPS coordinates to the location: 38.7881988,-104.8673876

Re: [cobirds] Pueblo West Gravel Pit

2021-03-17 Thread Kip Miller
Carl,

A couple of options Brandon Percival suggested to me: (And I use both)

1. Park in the Osprey Picnic Area lot of Lake Pueblo State Park and walk
east to the gravel pit/lake on the paved bike trail. (Just before getting
there I usually angle right on what seems to be an old road and then you
can walk closer to the shore where you like.)

2. Park in the state park's "Chain of Lakes and Arkansas River Access
<https://goo.gl/maps/d981dJGjDrLKYTwMA>" parking lot on Hwy 96 just east of
the "Goodnight Barn" and walk north to the gravel pit/lake. You'll actually
need to walk a bit northwest to cross a bridge, but it's pretty obvious on
site. You can also check the pond just north of the parking lot.

My son works at RMNP and has been clearing snow at the Alpine Visitor
Center and on the the upper parts of Trail Ridge Rd. He said they’re
shooting for a June 4 road opening if possible.

[cobirds] Rusty Blackbird - Kettle Lakes - El Paso County 4/17

2020-04-17 Thread Kip Miller
Hi all,

I had a male Rusty Blackbird earlier today at Kettle Lakes in El Paso
County.

It was in the NE corner of the lower pond, where an active flock of
Yellow-rumped Warblers (mostly Myrtles) and an Eastern Phoebe were actively
feeding along the water's edge.

I did not notice it for several minutes while I was standing and watching
the warblers and phoebe. It was slowly walking near the water's edge in the
underbrush and making occasional forays to the water's edge.
