[cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies Chico Basin Ranch Daily Update 10/2
Wow! Today was an awesome last day, as I caught two rarities at the station and 4 new species for the season. Highlights included a BLUE-HEADED VIREO, and a intergrade Fox Sparrow with characteristics of a Northern Fox Sparrow and Slate-colored Fox Sparrow. We banded 870 birds over 54 species this season, so it was definitely a good run. I will miss everyone that comes by the station and I hope to see you soon. [cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies Chico Basin Ranch Daily Update 10/01/21
Today was my second to last day of work, and it was super bittersweet. My last brigade of elementary school kids came through and seemed to really enjoy their time here at the banding station. Hey ya'll! Sorry I didn't post this last night but figured I would post before my banding day starts. Yesterday was our slowest day of the season, and just based on my short walk this morning, I think today is going to be more productive. Tomorrow is my last day of banding here at Chico, so if you'd like to chat with me or make birding arrangements, please come before 1PM tomorrow! [cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies Chico Basin Ranch Daily Update 9/29/21
Today we actually had to close early due to the wind. We had over 90 2nd and 3rd graders come to the station today, and the wind put a real damper on everything, though it was great to educate about bird banding. We did manage to capture and band a NEW Veery, which may stick around for a few days. Like I said previously, Saturday is my last day, so if you'd like to come out to the banding station to visit, please do. [cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies Daily Update 9/28/21
Today our capture rate slowed down significantly and I hope it will increase tomorrow as we are expecting the temperatures to dip tomorrow night. We have a school group of 50 showing up tomorrow, so I expect we'll be pretty busy (if not with the birds, definitely the kids) Chico captures for 9/28: Wilson's Warbler 5 Hermit Thrush 3 Lazuli Bunting 1 Ruby-crowned Kinglet 1 Brown Thrasher 1 We are open 6 days a week at Chico Basin Ranch (closed Sunday), usually returning from the first net run around 7am and staying open until about 11:30am, weather permitting. [cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies Chico Basin Ranch Daily Update 9/27/2021
The weather was very bizarre this morning so I was unsure if I could keep my nets open, but the weather died down and as a result we got a great variety of birds! Today seems to be the day for Woodpeckers as we caught our first Northern Flicker (intergrade) and the first banding record for a Yellow-bellied Sapsucker. More pictures would be appreciated if you were at the station, as we believe we do have a hybrid on our hands. Thank you to the MAMBO group for bringing me goodies and your awesome company today. I am going to post the link to my Western Bird Banding Association Webinar video to this update if you're interested in hearing me talk about net set up at Chico and a bird-banding demo. https://youtu.be/DrBHgtX-21M Chico captures for 9/27: Wilson's Warbler 13 Dark-eyed Junco 1 Northern Flicker 1 Ruby-crowned Kinglet 2 Gray Catbird 1 Hermit Thrush 5 Chipping Sparrow 3 Gambel's White Crowned Sparrow 3 Song Sparrow 1 Lincoln's Sparrow 7 Orange-crowned Warbler 2 Yellow-bellied Sapsucker 1 We are open 6 days a week at Chico Basin Ranch (closed Sunday), usually returning from the first net run around 7am and staying open until about 11:30am, weather permitting. [cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies Chico Basin Ranch Daily Update 9/25/21
Wilson's Warblers were still coming in strong yesterday, and remained a majority of my captures. We are starting to get a nice variety of sparrows and juncos trickling in, though, and the Ruby-crowned Kinglets are a staple for the seasons changing. This is my last week here at Chico and I am so thankful for everyone I have met here so far. I'll be banding my last day on Saturday! [cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies Chico Basin Ranch Banding Update 9/24/21
No shortage of Wilson's Warblers here-- they made up a majority of our captures today, which was 54. We have crossed the threshold of 700 birds banded for the season, which is an exciting milestone! We were also given the opportunity to present to an AP Biology class today and they were fascinated by the banding process and even got to see a Sharp-shinned Hawk up close! Thank you to Kara for volunteering these last two days. We had some relief from the slow day tomorrow, with 15 captures. We also had some school groups coming through so it was exciting to get to share that experience with them! [cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies Chico Basin Ranch Daily Update 9/22/21
Wow! The drop in captures overnight was significant, with only ten captures today. It looks like there was a storm-front that moved through from the west and it pushed the birds further south (or east) than anticipated. Tomorrow we should have some school groups visiting and are looking forward to the opportunity to teach students! Thank you so much to Camille, who has helped me for the last few days with banding and data entry! We ha a nice steady flow of birds going, and we caught our 600th bird of the season (which of course was a Wilson's warbler) The most surprising bird we caught which is a 7th banding record for Chico was a Black-throated Blue Warbler! Today was a slower day in comparison to the last few weeks, with only 24 captures. I can't complain, though! I was able to spend some time with new birders and volunteers, and we also saw a broad-winged hawk near some of our nets, which was both exciting and nerve-wrecking. [cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies Chico Basin Ranch Banding Update 9/18/21
Yesterday we could not open our nets due to the wind and we were in for a treat today! We have been getting lucky with capturing rarities here at Chico and today we caught a Yellow-throated Vireo! We also caught our first Black-headed Grosbeak of the season, which was personally a very exciting capture for me as a birder of the East. The Yellow-throated Vireo was captured next to the mud pit in the fenced-in area-- there should be a pathway in if others are trying to re-locate it. Thank you to all the birders who stopped by today to pay me a visit and take pics of the Yellow-throated Vireo. It is always a pleasure to see you all :) Chico captures for 9/18: Wilson's Warbler 13 Ruby-crowned Kinglet 1 Orange-crowned Warbler 1 Yellow-throated Vireo 1 Yellow-breasted Chat 1 Gray Catbird 3 Black-headed Grosbeak 1 Brown Thrasher 2 White-crowned Sparrow 1 We are open 6 days a week at Chico Basin Ranch (closed Sunday), usually returning from the first net run around 7am and staying open until about 11:30am, weather permitting. [cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies Chico Basin Ranch Banding Update 9/16/21
Today was a slower day here at the ranch, with only 27 captures (though it felt like more!) There was a Cassin's Kingbird vocalizing near the station, and I saw a large number of Blue Grosbeaks and White-crowned Sparrows moving about. I have started to submit Ebird lists from my banding mornings, but as it picks up this might become challenging. Highlight for the day was a hatch-year female Broad-tailed Hummingbird! We hit our 500th bird banded for the season today! Although we had no rarities here like we did yesterday, it was still a productive day with 39 captures. We caught our first Audubon's Warbler for the year, so they're starting to move through. I also caught another Veery, and know that a few birders are interested in seeing the Veery as well. What an exciting day! We caught two rarities today: a Nashville Warbler and a Philadelphia Vireo. [cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies Chico Basin Ranch Daily Banding Update 9/10/21
I thought I had already posted this, but I guess I exited it and didn't save it as a draft woops! Today was pretty interesting, with no captures our first round, but a surge of captures in our second round. A pleasant surprise was a hatch-year Sharp-shinned Hawk, and all of our visitors got to get a great look at the bird. We also captured our second Ovenbird of the season! Today we had 42 captures, bringing our number up to 382 birds for the season. It was extremely hot so we had to close early due to temperature. Thank you to all the birders that came out today! And thank you to Kara for being an awesome volunteer. [cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies Chico Basin Ranch Banding update 9/10
Today I was able to take the time to oogle some hummingbirds (both Hatch-year Calliopes), which was very exciting. On our second round we also caught a Sharp-shinned Hawk in the net which was fun to show to all of our visitors. We had a total of 42 captures for the day, with Wilson's Warblers still taking the cake on the highest number banded. Thank you to everyone that stopped by today! @Jim, Risa, John, Virginia and John Maynard, Joan and Tim. And thank you to Kara, Virginia, and John for helping me with clips and bird bags on my net rounds! It was highly appreciated. Today was very slow compared to our previous banding days, with only 29 captures for the day. We had our first school groups visit today and they had an amazing time! It should also be mentioned that we captured a Veery, Ovenbird, and a Philadelphia Vireo was spotted around the Banding Station. We also had a new species for the year: Slate-colored Junco! [cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies Chico Basin Ranch Banding Update 9/11/21
Sorry for the double post, but I wanted to post our banding update from today as well! I’d also like to mention that today I was featured on the Western Bird Banding Association’s online virtual conference! They will be sharing links of my pre-recorded video where I talk about the net set-up at Chico and do some bird-banding demonstrations. If you’d like that link when it becomes available please reply to this. We caught two new species for the season: a Common Yellowthroat and Townsend’s Warbler. It was amazing seeing the variation between a hatch-year male and female Townsend’s! We had 59 captures today, bringing out cumulative fall total to 433. Chico captures for 9/11: Wilson’s Warbler 32 Dusky Flycatcher 2 Townsend’s Warbler 2 Common Yellowthroat 1 Chipping Sparrow 3 Warbling Vireo 2 Cassin’s Vireo 1 Lazuli Bunting 1 MacGillivray’s Warbler 1 Lincoln’s Sparrow 2 Swainson’s Thrush 1 Yellow-breasted Chat 1 Western Tanager 1 Plumbeous Vireo 1 Ovenbird 1 We are open 6 days a week at Chico Basin Ranch (closed Sunday), usually returning from the first net run around 7am and staying open until about 11:30am, weather permitting. [cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies Chico Basin Ranch Banding Update 9/10/21
I tried posting this update yesterday but it was deleted twice so here goes! We had quite the exciting day with a variety of different visitors. The heat became intense very quickly so we had to close early, as it was 92 degrees by 10:40 AM. We caught a very spry hatch-year Sharp-shinned Hawk! We had a total of 42 captures, bringing the cumulative total for this fall up to 382 captures. I’d like to thank Kara for being an awesome volunteer, as well as Virginia and John Maynard who helped out as well, and thanks to all the other birders that showed up! (Risa, John, Joan, Tim, Jim)! I think I’m starting to remember all of your names! Chico Captures for 9/10: Wilson’s Warbler 21 Orange-crowned Warbler 4 Hammond’s Flycatcher 1 Chipping Sparrow 1 Lazuli Bunting 1 Lincoln’s Sparrow 6 Ovenbird 1 Yellow-breasted Chat 3 Sharp-shinned Hawk 1 Brown Thrasher 1 We are open 6 days a week at Chico Basin Ranch (closed Sunday), usually returning from the first net run around 7am and staying open until about 11:30am, weather permitting. [cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies Chico Basin Ranch Banding Update 9/9/2021
We had a lot of birders try to stop by the station this morning in search of the Black-billed Cuckoo, but to no avail. 533+ birds were predicted to have migrated last night, so it may have moved on. Birdcast is predicting that these next few nights as a part of peak migration, so we should see more interesting birds trickling in. A Philidelphia Vireo was spotted both at the house and at Headquarters today! We caught one new species for the season: a Green-tailed Towhee! I had 54 captures today and can only expect my numbers to increase from here. Hope to see more of you tomorrow. Chico captures for 9/9: Wilson's Warbler 22 Orange-crowned Warbler 14 Western Wood-pewee 1 Chipping Sparrow 3 House Wren 1 Indigo Bunting 1 Lincoln's Sparrow 7 Green-tailed Towhee 2 Yellow-breasted Chat 1 Brown Thrasher 1 Cordilleran Flycatcher 1 Also a little fun fact about bird migration: Day length changes are the primary reason that birds begin to migrate they can navigate using celestial cues from the sun and stars, the earth's magnetic field, and mental maps (how cool!) We are open 6 days a week at Chico Basin Ranch (closed Sunday), usually returning from the first net run around 7am and staying open until about 11:30am, weather permitting. [cobirds] Bird Conservancy of The Rockies Chico Basin Ranch Banding update 9/8
Today was a very peaceful day compared to the 91 captures we had yesterday. Some cedar waxwings flocked over the station which was a pleasant surprise as well. The last round brought with it a very molty Black-billed Cuckoo, which was super cool! Thank you to John and Virginia Maynard that came out to see the banding process and helped me on my net runs! It was appreciated. [cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies- Chico Basin Ranch Banding Report 9/7/21
Wow! Today was extremely busy with 91 captures. At one point I was a little bogged down and had to release some birds so I could catch up with the volume. Compared to yesterday we had 91 captures over 13 species compared to 40 with 23 yesterday, so diversity went down! Today I also recorded a banding demo that is going to be available at the Western Bird Banding Association Online Conference this Saturday. If you have any questions, please send them my way. What started off as a slow morning turned into a fruitful late-morning as the heat became more intense. We had 40 captures of 23 different species, and 7 new species for the season. New species included a Black-and-White Warbler. Ruby-crowned Kinglet, Cordilleran Flycatcher, Indigo Bunting, Plumbeous Vireo, Ovenbird, and Western Tanager. [cobirds] Bird Conservancy of the Rockies Chico Basin Ranch Banding Report 9/3
We received a large amount of rain and thunderstorms last night, which left the nets a little water laden, which may have affected our capture rates today. Though Birdcast anticipated as it being a high volume day for migration, our station had a few trickle in with 26 captures, with a majority of them being Wilson's Warblers. It was Kara's first day volunteering and she did a wonderful job! She will be helping out on Friday and you are able to see our Ebird report from today if you'd like. Chico's captures for 9/3: Wilson's Warbler 10 Orange-crowned Warbler 2 Western Wood-pewee Traill's Flycatcher 1 (we did wing formula and everything and the bird could not be determined) Macgillvray's Warbler 1 Chipping Sparrow 1 Cassin's Vireo 1 Yellow Warbler 1 Lazuli Bunting 1 Lincoln's Sparrow 1 Swainson's Thrush 2 Veery 1 Recaptures: Wilson's Warbler 1 Unbanded: American Robin We are open 6 days a week at Chico Basin Ranch (closed Sunday), usually returning from the first net run around 7am and staying open until about 11:30am, weather permitting.
