[cobirds] Bushtit [Greeley, Weld]

2016-08-15 Thread The "Nunn Guy"
Hi all

Secondhand report:

 - "Saw a flock of 20+ bushtits in Greeley on August 13. Though I know
they are not uncommon, I don't see them in northeastern Colorado very
often. Seen a few blocks west of Shawsheen Elementary School (4020 West 7th
 Street). Diane T/Laramie"

[cobirds] Two Prime Shorebird Habitats That Are Active/Weld

2016-08-15 Thread The "Nunn Guy"
Hi all

I ventured up to Weld CR 124 pond and Weld CR 116/Hwy 77 pond (on
east)--both were shallow and muddy and full of birds.

Weld CR 116/Hwy 77--I parked on Weld CR 116 and walked fallow field to edge
of pond (.1-.2m)

 - Baird's Sandpiper - 18
 - Willet - 1
 - Lesser Yellowlegs - 4
 - American Avocet - 2
 - Wilson's Phalarope - 22
 - Greater Yellowlegs - 1
 - McCown's Longspur - 6-8 flying around
 - Red-necked Phalarope - 1

Weld CR 124 Pond--I didn't walk into Weld CR 122 Pond--which I suspect is
just as active. Park along Weld CR 75/122 walk to pond west about .5m or
so passing abandoned farmhouse. Great Horneds can be found here and/or at
abandoned house north of this one along Weld 124.

 - Greater Yellowlegs - 5
 - Least Sandpiper - 3
 - Baird's Sandpiper - 8
 - Long-billed Dowitcher - 2
 - Semipalmated Plover - 1
 - Ducks, geese, pelis
 - Other "peeps" - 8-10

Crom Lake has no exposed shoreline yet.

Thanks

[cobirds] Both Longspurs [Weld and Cheyenne, WY]

Hi all

Weld CR 114/45 had two Chestnut-collared Longspur. Badger crossed my path
on Hwy 85/Weld CR 120.

Chalk Bluffs Road had a plethora of both species--literally at your feet
(immatures).

 - Chestnut-collared Longspur - 10+
 - McCown's Longspur - 50+ (often time large groups just lounging on the
 road)
 - Brewer's Sparrow
 - Blue Grosbeak
 - Grasshopper Sparrow (many)
 - Lark Bunting (loads of)

Probably lead my postponed trip to there next Saturday-keep watching.

[cobirds] Dickcissel [Wellington SWA, Wellington, Larimer]

2016-06-24 Thread The "Nunn Guy"
Hi all

This morning looked and listened for birds from Larimer CR 64 aka Nunn Road
aka Weld CR 100 to Larimer CR 3.

 - One Dickcissel singing
 - Two Mule Deer
 - Two Skunks eating snake (Garter I think)

Completed my Nunn Breeding Bird Survey Route recently--5 new species added
to list--new species streak still ongoing!

 - Swift Fox along Weld CR 108 got photo, video
 - Two Badgers along Weld CR 37 north of Weld CR 114 near USDA building
(one seen here on recent Denver Audubon trip to CPER)

Owlets at Weld CR 33 colony not above ground just yet--met Greeley and
Loveland birders out looking for owls, too.

[cobirds] FYI Baltimore Oriole(2) [Private Residence, Fort Collins, Larimer]

2016-05-31 Thread The "Nunn Guy"
Hi all

Sharing via Ann M. in Fort Collins: "We had two male Baltimore Orioles
hanging around one of our gardens this afternoon By the time I was able to
get my phone out - they flew off. This is a first for this side (east of
Lemay and a mile from Carpenter road) to see one in our 16 years of living
here."

[cobirds] Re: Prothonotary Warbler [Poudre River Trail, Fort Collins, Larimer, CO]

2016-04-12 Thread The "Nunn Guy"
Hi all

Scientist here told me the story of the "Prothonotary" name-which I did not
know.

 - The name "Prothonotary" refers to clerks in the Roman Catholic church,
 whose robes were bright yellow.

Thought interesting enough to share.

[cobirds] Glenmere Park Rebounding? [Greeley, Weld]

2016-04-11 Thread The "Nunn Guy"
Hi all

About two or three years ago the abundant rookery here was thriving 80-100
birds on nests--the following week every one of them were gone
mysteriously. The last two years for most part no nesting birds.

Sunday I visited (hoping) and found a Black-crowned Night Heron

and a Snowy Egret
!
Hopefully more to follow. Plenty of Great-tailed Grackle

(12+) along Weld CR 48 as well as Wilson's Snipe (6)--here are four

together. Along Beebe Draw Swainson's Hawk (6) here is one

and one other
.

I've seen multiple in Nunn-area as well. A pair chased a Great Horned Owl
from its roost at Behren's Lake--btw lake is full of water (and
waterfowl). Stood atop my car to get a peek at it ... :-)

Burrowing Owl population now up to three along Weld CR 33 (btw 98/100) here
is newlywed pair

and a current bachelor

.

Traveled the most northern roads of Weld County yesterday. I saw 6
Rough-legged Hawks up there along Hwy 14, Weld CRs 129, 134, 111, 124 and

[cobirds] Sandhill Crane (and more) [Wellington SWA, Wellington, Larimer]

2016-03-21 Thread The "Nunn Guy"
Hi all

While commuting to work along Larimer CR 64 (aka Nunn Road aka Weld CR 100)
at Wellington SWA this morning there were 20 Sandhill Crane

in cultivated field on south just before frontage road. A few of them were
gleefully
dancing picking up corn stalk and cow manure and flinging it
(video) about.

Yesterday, while traversing Weld County I saw a Mute Swan

at Arrowhead Lake; Ring-billed Gull frenzy

at Woods Lake; Yellow-rumped Warbler

along Beebe Draw; our two active Great Horned Nests
near my
house are doing well; our contingent of Ring-necked Pheasant

continue to visit our yard and chow down
; two Snow Goose
at
Neff Lake; and a "zillion" loafing Ring-billed Gull
(I took 11 photos of entire
flock at link below) at Latham Reservoir Marsh. Horned Lark
was nice enough to stay and
sing for me.

No plover or burrowing owl anywhere yet.

[cobirds] Horned Grebe/Timnath Reservoir Marsh [Larimer]

2016-03-07 Thread The "Nunn Guy"
Hi all

I saw pair of Horned Grebes in the Timnath Reservoir marsh--they've
excavated both side of road for a potential bike path(?) which for now
makes for nice road parking along the marsh. Also, saw Hooded Merganser
pair at Arapahoe Bend Natural Area [Larimer], Killdeer-3 [Crom Lake,
Pierce], Say's Phoebe [Nunn], American White Pelican-39 [Cozzens Lake,
Eaton], Snow Goose [Woods Lake, Severance], a bunch of loafing
gulls-nothing else [north shore of Timnath Reservoir, Larimer], too.

[cobirds] Cinnamon Teal/Crom Lake [Weld]

2016-03-02 Thread The "Nunn Guy"
Hi all

Been taking various commuter routes from Nunn to Fort Collins of late.
Today's highlights:

Crom Lake
Cinnamon Teal

Cobb Lake, Antelope Reservoir, Cobb Lake SWA and Wellington SWA Ponds are
full of birds (ducks, geese, gulls)--for each there are huge numbers of
Redhead. Cobb Lake had many loafing gulls (Ring-billeds, Herring) and
geese on north shore.

The Bald Eagle pair renovating a Nunn Great Horned Owl nest were both on
the nest again this morning.

[cobirds] "Clash of the Titans"/Nunn Yard Last Night

2016-02-05 Thread The "Nunn Guy"
Hi all

We were treated to a spectacular event just before near dark in our
"fenced" 12,000 sq ft landscaped-backyard (35-acre lot)--as my wife opened
our backdoor to turn on heated water bowls for birds, she froze as a Great
Horned Owl flew into top of our Cottonwood trees. Soon after a Short-eared
Owl came in to harass the Great Horned! It dive-bombed the Great Horned
Owl a few minutes and then flew southerly direction.

Third time we have had Short-eared Owl in/near yard

 1. One last night
 2. One I called in with iPod one winter five years ago
 3. Over on Weld CR 33 (btw 100 and 98) we flushed three from roadside
one night (7 years ago) near large prairie dog colony

Why do predators visit our yard you ask?

 - Two dozen+ bird feeders (tubes and ground trays)
 - Lots of Cottontails visit/eat (we've counted up to 20 at times) manage
to get in our "fenced" landscape-which we don't mind

Thanks Gary Lefko, Nunn

[cobirds] Record Day on Raptor Alley (Saturday)/Nunn

2016-01-19 Thread The "Nunn Guy"
Hi all

Great day for raptoring with about 20 or so enthusiastic birders! We set a
record by my account with 89 total raptors in 4-5 hours time.

Highlights of day included two Merlin (lifer for some), Golden Eagles
(lifer for some), a "tornado" of Horned Larks (multiple thousands) that had
numerous raptors chasing and watching flock, and a very friendly
Rough-legged Hawk that flew about 30 feet directly over our group and
landed on fencepost right next to vehicles--staying the entire time as
folks got great photo closeups of the photogenic bird.

Ferruginous Hawk - 14
Bald Eagle - 4
Northern Harrier - 17
Red-tailed Hawk - 18
Prairie Falcon - 3
Unknown buteo - 7
Great Horned Owl - 1
Rough-legged Hawk - 5
Merlin - 2
American Kestrel - 15
Cooper's Hawk - 1
Golden Eagle - 2

Finally got around to doing a map of route for those interested ...

[cobirds] Lesser Black-backed Gull/Weld

2015-12-14 Thread The "Nunn Guy"
Hi all

Toured lakes from Greeley to Lake Loveland yesterday. Frozen pond to west
of Windsor Lake had an adult Lesser Black-backed Gull hanging out with
handful of Ring-billeds.

Lakes with "huge quantities" of birds

 - Seeley Lake (north half covered with birds--22 Snow Goose, Greater
 White-fronted Goose)
 - Windsor Reservoir (thousands of birds out in middle)

Looks like "climate change" will provide us much open water this year for
CBCs from what I saw yesterday.

[cobirds] Re: Cobirds vs Ebird Reporting

2015-10-30 Thread The "Nunn Guy"
Hi all

To add, just today while "walking the internet" I found two local "Birds
and Brews" and "Northern Colorado" birding groups. Seems to have been
around awhile as well. I agree with Joey, Diana people bird for personal
reasons and "centralized or one-stop birding" is quickly disappearing--21st
century digital birding is the norm. I even realize at some point my site

[cobirds] New Birding Spot and the "Other" Walmart Pond/Fort Collins-area

2015-10-16 Thread The "Nunn Guy"
Hi all

There is a great dabbler viewing pond on Hwy 287/College Ave between Fort
Collins and Loveland. It is just before the Walmart and adjacent to the
BBQ restaurant there. It seems to have loads of birds every time I drive
by it. It was chockful of dabblers today. The sun is behind your back,
there is a pull off for 2-3 cars right there, your close(viewing range) and
the ducks don't mind the company. Great place to study up close.

 - Mallard
 - Northern Shoveler
 - Northern Pintail
 - Gadwall
 - American Wigeon
 - Green-winged Teal
 - American Coot

The "new" birding spot (relatively) is the Rigden Storage Reservoir
Project--a very large reservoir. Follow Horsetooth Road all the way east
until just before Arapaho Bend Natural Area turn south--reservoir on
north. Looks like great spot for birds once it is found--keep an eyeball
out this fall.

 - Canada Goose
 - Ring-billed Gull
 - Ruddy Duck
 - Eared Grebe
 - Western Grebe
 - American Coot
 - Mallard

[cobirds] Re: Slow Migration?

2015-10-14 Thread The "Nunn Guy"
Hi all

"I'm not a rocket scientist" but I am sure the "CC" word (Climate Change)
has an effect--one article writes "Steadily rising temperatures have been
prompting birds to begin their migration patterns either too early or too
late." Probably many more similar articles out there.

Maybe we are looking "too late" or "too early" ... :-)

 -

http://livinggreenmag.com/2013/02/22/mother-nature/bird-migration-patterns-changing-due-to-climate-change/

I would think we are only in the infant stages of research understanding CC
effects on birds and their behaviors and patterns as a result.

[cobirds] Re: Closure of Crow Valley Campground by the USFS?

2015-09-28 Thread The "Nunn Guy"
Answer from definitive FS source ...

Hi Gary,

Just wanted to let you know that there is no intention to close the Crow
Valley campground at this time. While the Forest Service across the nation
is suffering from budget restraints and trying to determine what size of a
recreational program will fit in the future, any decisions to close sites
would require much additional thoughts and analysis. We have not done
anything like that. Even should we enter into such a process, one point
that would be discussed and analyzed would be the distance to other
available campgrounds in the area. Crow Valley being the only one for many
miles has that going for it even in a worst case scenario. I just wanted
to let you know that we have not even gotten to that stage of the game yet
so, there is really no truth to the rumors you have heard. Are we short
money –yes. Are we wondering how to fix it – yes. Do we know what that fix
looks like – not at the present time.

Stop in and see me if you have any more concerns. I understand you live in
Nunn.

[cobirds] Timnath Reservoir/Larimer

2015-09-03 Thread The "Nunn Guy"
Hi all

TImnath Reservoir has drawn down a lot and has lots of birds--mostly on
north side of reservoir. Couldn't pick out anything unusual. Lots of
ducks ("billion" coots); gulls (usuals), some Forster's Terns; grebes,
pelicans, cormorants, herons, few Wilson's Warblers. It seems the marsh is
inaccessible--road was blocked from south and looks like they are doing
some heavy roadwork right in front of marsh viewing area. Didn't see any
signs (yet) that say "Timnath residents only" for park on south.

[cobirds] Black Tern/Loloff Reservoir (Weld)

2015-08-10 Thread The "Nunn Guy"
Hi all

I had a single Black Tern at Loloff Reservoir/Weld accompanied by about
100+ Franklin's Gull. There were 80+ Franklin's Gull at Weld CR 59, too.
Woods Lake drawing down nicely--big mudflat on NW corner along road. Had
two sandpiper-types trying to identify.

Weld CR 48 is just about bone dry these days.

We had Scrub Jay family at Lory State Park/Larimer on our hike.

We have Blue Grosbeak nesting in our windbreak (a first)--we've seen and
heard the male all throughout the summer. Yesterday while planting more
flowers in our landscaped backyard (12,000 sq ft) we had the male and
female chipping back and forth in and around windbreak then heard two
nestlings.

[cobirds] High Plains Birding Club Saturday Field Trip Results

2015-07-27 Thread The "Nunn Guy"
A group of 15-20 birders enjoyed a fabulous outing (and hot weather) to the
high plains of Northern Colorado and Cheyenne, WY for our target species
longspurs. They did not disappoint.

At Weld CR 108/Hwy 85 SE corner (permitted area) we had numerous
Grasshopper Sparrow, Lark Bunting, two calling McCown's Longspurs and when
we fanned out in the field other reported getting good views of McCown's
and possible female Chestnut-collared. On to Chalk Bluffs Road just over
WY border.

We probably saw and heard 12+ Chestnuts along the south portion--and a few
McCown's. At one stop we had the McCown's closeup in hay covering new
underground pipeline along road. Numerous points along road had Chestnuts
flying about. My "plant" male Chestnut-collared did not
disappoint--present and very active with others in the same vicinity.

We then went over to Hereford Ranch for a visit and some had lunch as well.
Nothing rare found here. This spring migration they had a cuckoo here as
told by Mark and Barb G from Cheyenne, WY.

Sunday my wife and I heard Nick's Baird's Sparrow near cattle crossing
about one mile in. Also at same locale on east were 12+ Burrowing Owls.
In Nunn on way to Greeley along Weld CR 33 owl site (btw 98/100) we had 10
Burrowing Owls on the fence line.
