[cobirds] Re: Yellow-crowned Night Heron

2022-04-21 Thread birding...@gmail.com
I'm sure this is the same bird. The pond is what I call Dunkirk Pond
(Himalaya changes to Dunkirk St just south of 53rd) and is a main feature
of the First Creek at Green Valley Ranch Trail. This is the same spot
that has had the Blackburnian Warbler, Blue-winged Warbler, several other
eastern warblers, Ash-throated Flycatcher, Rose-breasted Grosbeak,
Woodhouse's Scrub-jay, White-throated Sparrow, Field Sparrow, etc (I'm
getting tired of naming them all).

[cobirds] Black-throated Blue Warbler - 1st Creek @ GVR, Denver

2021-09-17 Thread birding...@gmail.com
Adult male Black-throated Blue Warbler was seen this morning around 8am
north of the Dunkirk Pond. It was on the north end of the woods the last I
saw it.

[cobirds] Possible Tennessee Warbler - 1st Creek @ GVR, Denver County

2021-05-05 Thread birding...@gmail.com
Tennessee Warbler. My confidence level is 99%. White underneath,
yellow/green on the back, gray head with a light/white eyebrow. Under-tail
looked white. My look at that was just short enough to cause the 1%
hesitation, but only for reporting purposes. I believe this to be a TEWA.
It was seen along the creek just east of the willows that are on the far
east end of 1st Creek Park. There are two boards spanning the creek. It was
right there among a mixed flock of Yellow, Yellow-rumped, and
Orange-crowned Warblers.

Also seen were the Blue-winged Warbler, the two Eastern Phoebes, a whole
lot of Chipping Sparrows, Spotted Sandpiper, and the Virginia's Rail was
very vocal.

[cobirds] New Year - Great Horned Owl - Denver

2020-12-31 Thread birding...@gmail.com
Not a surprise, but a minute or two after minute, I saw a Great Horned Owl
perched on a tree just north of the Dunkirk pond at First Creek at Green
Valley Ranch. Throw in some geese and the Denver Urban count is up to
three species already. I'd have stayed out longer to listen, but all I
could hear were fireworks and geese.

[cobirds] Re: Broader question about access to Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge, Adams County

Just the visitors center is closed for those times. The arsenal itself is
usually open sunrise to sunset (except a couple of holidays - possibly
Christmas and Thanksgiving, but I'm not sure).

[cobirds] First Creek @ GVR - Denver County

2020-10-03 Thread birding...@gmail.com
I took a quick walk this morning along the First Creek Trail at Green
Valley Ranch. In a twist from recent visits, I had no warblers at all, but
plenty of sparrows. Among dozens of White-crowned Sparrows was a lone
White-throated seen on the west side of the Dunkirk. It was foraging in
some trees along with all of the robins. There were several Lincoln's
Sparrows, a Townsend's Solitaire, a couple of Hermit Thrushes, and a good
number of Pine Siskins (Hermits were north of the pond, the siskins were at
First Creek Park). Fun Day

[cobirds] 1st Creek @ GVR - Denver : Birds of Minor Interest

2020-08-30 Thread birding...@gmail.com
Starting a little before sunrise and birding for approximately three hours,
I picked up 50 species along the newest and eastern-most portion of the
First Creek Trail system.

*The Dunkirk Pond area* (previous spot for the Yellow-crowned Night Heron
and Blackburnian Warbler) was reasonably slow. It did have the resident
White-breasted Nuthatches, 3 Wood Ducks, a Great Blue Heron, Great Horned
Owls, Red-tailed and Swainson's Hawks, American Kestrel, and a juvenile
Black-crowned Night Heron. A Cooper's Hawk was seen a little east of there.

*The far western end of the trail, just east of Tower Rd* had Gray Catbird,
Blue Grosbeak, Broad-tailed and Black-chinned Hummingbirds, Wilson's
Warblers, Lark Sparrow, Cedar Waxwings, and Red-breasted Nuthatch.

In between these two spots, *in the Willow and Cottonwood area north of the
bike path behind the row of houses just east of First Creek Park* was were
the fun was. In no particular order, I observed Common Nighthawk,
Nashville Warbler, Western Tanager, Clay-colored and Brewer's Sparrow, both
Cassin's and Red-eyed Vireo, Sage Thrasher and a Blue-gray Gnatchatcher.

Annoying ID Alerts that you can ignore: A Warbling Vireo was around a week
or two ago, so pay attention to the vireos with eyebrows if looking for the
REVI. A MacGillavray's
Warbler was seen yesterday, so the same advice applies for gray-headed
yellow birds if you are looking for the Nashville. Also, even though I
managed to not see a single one today, the juvenile Chipping Sparrows
should be around, so the spizella IDs are interesting.

I think that covers it. Have fun out there.
