[cobirds] American Bittern

2020-04-21 Thread Karen Drozda
I can assure you, from the shade of red of my eyes, I could not find the
American Bittern as of 1330 today. I looked for 2 hours. The winds were
calm, so the cattails were still. The east side of the marsh is being
dredged, and they are doing road construction on MLK Blvd. If anyone gets
on it again, please post. I live a short distance from there. Thanks.

[cobirds] American Bittern Update

2019-10-22 Thread 'Egret' via Colorado Birds
The Bittern was last recorded on Ebird by Aaron Driscoll on Saturday at 4:15
pm. I saw it earlier and returned at 5 to try for a photo. I did a quick lap
around the lake Monday at 4:15 and today at 1. I did not see it.
It has been on Memorial Lake in El Paso county.

The Boulder Bird Club observed an American Bittern today at 11:25 AM. It flew
out of the cattails on the south end of the marsh (parking lot side) across to
the edge of more cattails on the south east side.

[cobirds] American Bittern continues at Reservoir Ridge NA (Larimer)

2017-06-17 Thread John Shenot
An American Bittern was calling Friday evening at Reservoir Ridge, after
7:30pm. Possibly earlier but it was windier earlier. I heard this same bird
(presumably) LAST Saturday, also in the evening. It had been previously
reported on eBird by other birders who may or may not follow COBIRDS.

Reservoir Ridge NA has multiple parking areas. This bird could be heard from
the east-west trail that starts at the Overland Trail parking lot. It was in
the reeds around the pond that is south of the trail about 0.5(?) miles from
the parking lot.

We don't get many bitterns in Larimer County. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE stay on the
trail. Don't approach the pond. Hearing the bird is good enough. Don't make me
regret posting here, which I do with some hesitation but with thanks for all of
you who share so much information here.

Also: bobolinks are present here in numbers, and some other lovely birds, but I
didn't find the Dickcissels reported yesterday morning.

[cobirds] American Bittern on RBA

2016-05-28 Thread Joyce Takamine
American Bittern is not normally considered rare and on the RBA.
But the recent report of one in Archuleta county was a first for the
county so I included it on the RBA. When a bird is a new county
record and I know it, then I include it on the RBA and indicate it is
a country record. We do have county listers. Another recent county
record is Black-chinned Hummingbirds in Gilpin County. We may have
another of Eastern Phoebe in Rio Grande but I will have to check on that.

I saw that the American Bittern was on rare list for Colorado. I was
photographing at Walden Ponds on May 12 and was able to photograph two
American Bittern. I have not been there since that day. They were

[cobirds] American Bittern at Sawhill Ponds in Boulder

2016-05-03 Thread Jamie Simo
Lifer! I heard and saw an American Bittern at Sawhill Ponds this
afternoon. First I heard the gulping and then I saw the bird standing on a
little hillock. When you park at Cottonwood Marsh it was at the 2nd pond
on the left as you walk past the sign for Sawhill Ponds.

[cobirds] American Bittern- Crow Valley CG -

Subject: [cobirds] Eastern Wood Pewee- Crow Valley CG - and around Weld

For some reason cobirds does not like me today! Third time trying to post
this...

Crow Valley was filled with normal breeding birds and few migrants this AM.
Best bird was an Eastern Wood-pewee, which was silent until I played a
recording, at which point it vocalized in response, supporting the physical
traits of very pale chest (almost no vest), pale all orange lower mandible, and
two uniformly bright (almost white) wingbars. It also shows the slight
cocked-tail pose typical of Eastern per ABA article
(http://www.aba.org/birding/v40n5p34.pdf). I uploaded a couple of photos at:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/aphelionart/

Other birds of interest include female Rose-breasted Grosbeak, Northern
Waterthrush, and a pair of wood ducks (maybe only notable because I have never
seen them here). On the whole not many warblers there today.

I cruised through WCR 59 ponds, loloff, lower latham, Stewart's, and Bebee Draw
and although a good number of species I really didn't turn up anything truly
noteworthy at any of those locations.

[cobirds] American Bittern -- Lake Estes/Larimer

2012-04-22 Thread Gary Matthews
Scott Rashid and I were quite surprised to see an American Bittern at Lake
Estes this evening. Fortunately a young fisherman asked us what that bird
was that had been standing in the same spot for an hour. It was standing
on the rocky east shore of the Big Thompson River as it enters Lake Estes.
It was readily visible for the walk bridge over the river. We believe
this is the first record of an American Bittern at Lake Estes. In addition
we saw our first Willet, Brown Thrasher and Common Yellowthroats for the
year at the lake.

[cobirds] American Bittern, Solitary Sandpiper - Lower Latham

2010-04-02 Thread mike
Thursday evening Doug Kibbe and I stopped by Lower Latham on our way
to go owling and were rewarded with a First of the Season (FOS)
American Bittern, a lone Solitary Sandpiper, and a couple of American
Avocets. There were good numbers of Northern Harriers, but we didn't
spot any Short-eared Owls.
