2016-05-15 Thread JoAnn Hackos
Near the Soda Lakes boat launch, in the scrub around the parking lot, we found
an immature female Blackburnian Warbler and two Nashville Warblers among the
many Yellow-rumps. Bullocks Orioles, Yellow Warblers, a House Wren, grackles,
robins, red-wings, among others.

[cobirds] Bear Creek Park, Colo Spgs

2009-12-19 Thread Steven Brown
Hi COBirders,

Just back from my Colo Spgs CBC site. My area includes "Section 16"
and the Palmer Trail, in the foothills and cliffs above the Bear Creek
Nature Center on the SW side of Colo Spgs. The Douglas Fir are loaded
with cones - like I've never seen - and the montane birds are working
them, mostly at higher elevations there. I haven't done all of my
numbers, but I had over 110 Red-breasted Nuthatch, dozens of Cassin's
Finch, Pine Siskin, Mountain Chickadees, a couple of Red Crossbills,
and an even dozen Evening Grosbeak - a first at this site in my 25
years of counting. All were seen high up in the Douglas Fir, on the
sunny slopes. I even had my first Pygmy Nuthatches feeding in Douglas
Fir cones - (aren't they supposed to be Ponderosa specific???)

I t was a VERY good day.

[cobirds] Bear Creek Park Count (El Paso); record 13 warblers (incl Bl-thr Green W.) and species total

2014-05-17 Thread Stephen Getty
COBirders,

Today, 25 birders participated in the 20th Bear Creek Park spring bird count in
Colorado Springs. A species count of 86 was a record, and 13 warbler species
were very impressive. The best bird was male Black-throated Green Warbler at
the Bear Creek Nature Center (did not sing; listen for "tick" chip).

Other count highlights include:
Rose-breasted Grosbeak
Indigo Bunting
Black-and-White Warbler (min of 3)
Townsend's Warbler
N. Waterthrush
Ovenbird
Ash-throated Flycatcher
Band-tailed Pigeon

Thus far, "week-of" birds not seen today include Summer Tanager, Clay-colored
and Brewer's Sparrow, and Rock Wren (rats).

Cordially,
Steve Getty
