[cobirds] Black-crowned Night-Herons

2016-01-24 Thread Kathy and Jeff Dunning
Hi -

Jeff and I wandered up to I-270 and the Platte and walked south a bit over
a mile this morning. Just upstream of the big effluent outflow south of
I-270, we found seven Black-crowned Night-Herons (6 adult, 1 immature)
which was a somewhat unexpected treat.

In that same area was an adult male Wood Duck.

Good birding,

[cobirds] Black-crowned night herons at City Park

2011-03-31 Thread Mary Keithler
Greetings,

I visited Ferril Lake in City Park this afternoon to see who was nesting on
the island. I didn't have binoculars with me, but was able to see several
double-crested cormorants on nests and two adult black-crowned night
herons. These were the FOY for me. There may have been nesting great blue
herons, but I couldn't tell without binoculars.

Yesterday I was at Cherry Creek State Park and saw several mountain
bluebirds and one immature bald eagle, as well as the greater yellowlegs.

[cobirds] Black-crowned Night-Herons at Holcim Wetlands east of Florence

2011-06-02 Thread SeEtta Moss
Though I have seen Black-crowned Night-Herons at Holcim Wetlands since I
began conducting bird surveys there several years ago I have never had any
indication that they were breeding (also none recorded breeding in Fremont
County). This week I found 2 adults and 1 immature Black-crowned
Night-Herons (I believe this is likely a first spring bird) and they are
foraging during the day which *Birds of North America* online states, "Feeds
mainly from evening to early morning, but feeds during day in times of high
food demand such as during breeding season."

Holcim Wetlands, located several miles east of Florence on CR120, was
created by Holcim Cement after a toxic release (Colo Dept of Public Health
and Environment allows those violating air standards to pay a fine or do a
good environmental deed and Holcim chose to do the wetland). It was created
in an abandoned gravel pit that had been dug in a former channel of the
Arkansas River which I believe accounts for the number of birds that use it
and do so increasingly each year.

I got some very nice photos of one or both adult Black-crowned Night-Herons
including several in flight plus not as good photos of the immature, all
uploaded to my BirdsAndNature

[cobirds] Black-Crowned Night Herons and Wood Ducks in Arvada (Jefferson County)

2015-01-27 Thread Barry
On Saturday, 1/24/2015, we headed down to Jack B. Tomlinson Park in Arvada
(Jefferson County) because of a recent eBird report of a dozen Wood Ducks,
which sounded unlikely, but interesting. Sure enough, when we got there,
all we could see from the quite windy parking lot were a batch of Canada
Geese and a few ducks at the far end. Turns out we were right, there
weren't really a dozen Wood Ducks there, there were *fifteen*, located in
both the main pond and the smaller pond to the west. We went back on Sunday
and found only two. However, over at nearby Four-Acre Lake Park (also
Jeffco), we found clusters of geese, shovelers, and mergansers...and a
juvenile Black-Crowned Night Heron sitting on a branch near the water. A
few minutes later, two more juvenile herons flew in.

While not super-rare, the big numbers of Wood Ducks and
aren't-they-too-far-north-for-January Night Herons were fun to see.
