[cobirds] Black and White Warbler

2023-05-30 Thread Paula Hansley
I made a mistake. I heard the warbler again and the song is that of a Black
and White Warbler not a Bay-breasted.

I’m walking around the neighborhood to see if I can head it again.

I think the warblers are attracted by the sound of my waterfall.

Trying to figure out how to record on my iPhone!

Hey CoBirds,

Wanted to report a Black-and-White Warbler passing through N. Boulder this

and a first for me and very unexpected this snowy morning.

[cobirds] Black-and-White Warbler and Hooded Warbler in Bent County

2019-05-10 Thread Duane Nelson

Birders,

I was at Tempel Grove between 12:15 and 2 this afternoon. For the fourth
consecutive day, it was jacket/gloves/winter cap weather. I found the
continuing female Hooded Warbler again today. Like me, she was stressed
by the cold. Today, she was just south of the westernmost tree brush
pile west of the bridge and south of the canal, foraging on the ground
on straw next to the brush pile. The male Black-and-White Warbler was in
tall trees on the extreme west end of the grove, south of the tree
piles, and just east of the cleared agricultural land.

Like Mark, I observed two Northern Waterthrushes. Unlike Mark, I saw no
Yellow-throated Warblers.

[cobirds] Black-and-White Warbler - deKoevend Park (Arapahoe Co.)

2016-10-12 Thread Jared Del Rosso
I visited deKoevend Park (Arapahoe Co.) this evening, hoping to collect my
first juncos at the park. (There were a half dozen in my yard near the
park, so I thought I might spot one there too.) I didn't see any, but a
walk along the High Line Canal trail on the southwest side of the park
yielded many robins, a Townsend Solitaire, seven White-crowned Sparrows,
and my first Hermit Thrush at deKoevend.

I took the High Line Canal Trail back home, stopping on the southern edge
of the park to watch, count, and photograph a flock of Bushtit. I'm glad I
did. Above the Bushtit were a few Black-capped Chickadee. Above the
chickadee were three Downy Woodpecker. Above the woodpeckers was a
Black-and-White Warbler, my first in Colorado. (Photographs of the bird,
which was fairly high in trees across the canal from me, are in my eBird
checklist: http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist/S32012559.)

Two days ago, I had the good fortune of watching a late Common Nighthawk at
deKoevend.

[cobirds] Black-and-White Warbler, Red-headed Woodpecker, hummer building nest on Canon City Riverwalk yesterday

2016-05-07 Thread SeEttaM .
Yesterday the Arkansas Valley Audubon Society co-sponsored a field trip to
the Canon City Riverwalk with Leon Bright and I co-leading with Steve Olson
and Ron Torretta from the Forest Service. The Red-headed Woodpecker was
refound and viewed by the 7 adults and 2 children participating. Steve
Olson spotted a Black-and-White Warbler but it disappeared before others
could view it (I was going to look for it this morning but they had a big
foot race going that precluded birding and when I looked after the race I
did not find it, or for that matter many birds).

Also spotted was a Black-chinned Hummingbird building a nest right over the
parking lot. I got a couple of photos of that and have uploaded them to
my Birds and Nature blog.

P.s. Somewhere out there, Tony Leukering is getting a chuckle out of this.
(Inside joke; I just sent off a note about Boulder County's too-lax filter for
eBird, and I specifically cited April reports of BW Warbler. Serves me
right...)

[cobirds] Black and White Warbler here Wednesday

2011-12-08 Thread Robert A. Spencer
hi cobirders. Surprise about 11: 30AM Wednesday a Black and White
Warbler showed up at the Thistle feeder. It fed for
about 5 minutes before flying away. It was a first year male . I
found my copy of Warblers book by Jon Dunn . Jon described
the autumn male and notes it wanders west. Great yard bird #35 for
the year. I thought it should be in Costa Rica long ago.

Jon Dunn was great at observing sparrows and enjoyable to bird
with. I noticed my book was also signed by Jon Dunn at

the 1998 Lamar Convention. Join the CFO!

Keep watching for rarities.

[cobirds] Black-and-white Warbler -- Pueblo County 9/20

2011-09-20 Thread Brandon K. Percival
Margie Joy and I saw a Black-and-white Warbler in the extreme eastern end of
the Osprey Picnic Area in the Rock Canyon Picnic Area, near the bridge that
heads east to the Pueblo Nature Center.  It was last seen at this location at
1245pm.  It was with a group of birds, Black-capped Chickadees, Wilson's
Warblers, Downy Woodpecker, Yellow-rumped Warblers, Orange-crowned Warblers,
and Plumbeous Vireo.

In the western part of the Osprey Picnic Area I saw three Townsend's Warblers,
several Wilson's Warblers, and a Warbling Vireo.

The cold front, seems to have brought some birds in.  Tomorrow, might be even
better, who knows.

[cobirds] Black-and-White Warbler / Saguache County

2011-07-04 Thread Lynn Alterman
On July 3, while conducting Breeding Bird Atlas surveys in the Laughlin
Gulch-SE
block (Atlas Region 8, Saguache County), I observed a single male
Black-and-White Warbler singing spontaneously at approximately 0800. I heard
the distinctive wee-see-wee-see-wee-see (squeaky wheel) song, and was
extremely surprised. I am very familiar with this species, having spent three
summers in the south (Arkansas and Louisiana), so I my first thoughts were...
Black-and-white Warbler, cool..., and then what is this bird doing
here? The bird was singing from a thicket of deciduous shrubs in the
understory of a mixed conifer-aspen stand. About a minute or so after I first
heard the bird, it popped up from the shrubs and perched low in a tree about 20
feet in front of me. At that point there was no doubt it was indeed a
Black-and-white Warbler. Observed field marking for this species included a
black and white striped crown, with white eye stripe; black lores, ear patch,
and throat; white underparts with heavy black streaking on flanks; and two
distinctive white wing bars. What a fantastic surprise, and just goes to show
how fun and interesting atlasing can be! I did not observe a female or any
other evidence of breeding, so at this point I'm not even sure how to report
this bird for my Atlas block. Was this a possible breeding bird or just a
lonely lost male? According to the Birds of North America species account
(Kricher 1995), early July is still within the heart of this species' breeding
season, with the earliest records for fall migration initiating at the end of
July. Thus, I am tempted to record the bird as a Possible Breeder, using
breeding code X (singing male).

The location of the bird is as follows:

From the town of Saguache, travel south on HWY 285 approximately 6 miles and
turn right onto County Road T (gravel). Follow County Road T approximately 1.5
mi, then bear right following signs for Tracy Canyon and North Tracy Canyon.
Continue approximately 1.4 miles and turn right at sign for North Tracy Canyon.

The road becomes less improved at this point, but most vehicles with the
clearance of at least a Subaru should be able to continue. Continue on the
North Tracy Canyon Road about 4.5 miles. Along the way you'll come to a
make-shift gate/cattle guard (thick, metal wire with orange flagging) that you
can open and cross (please close to keep cattle from escaping). Turn left onto
another unimproved road. If you miss this turn, just up the road, you will see
a sign with a left arrow, then another sign for South Tracy Canyon Road, and
you
can turn left here and it will meet the other road. Follow unimproved road
about 2 miles (winding through pinyon trees) and you will come to a gate. Go
through the gate (don't forget to close it), and travel a little further until
you see a fire ring on the left side of the road. That is a good place to
park,
as the road gets narrower ahead and it is difficult to turn around. Walk up
the
road following a drainage with mixed conifer and aspen (habitat on the left),
about 1/4 mile or so, until you see a patch of deciduous shrubs. This is where
I observed the bird. The drive into the site takes about an hour from Saguache.

Good Birding!

[cobirds] Black-and-white Warbler and Brown Thrasher - Larimer County

2009-05-10 Thread Dave Renee Haip-Such
At home we've found the Black-and-white Warbler three days in a row (May
8-10). There have been lots of birds moving through at our elevation. The
other notable new yard bird is a Brown Thrasher, which I saw this evening.
 Otherwise, we've had a Plumbeous Vireo, Virginia's Warblers, Orange-crowned
Warblers, and lots of Yellow-rumped Warblers.
