[cobirds] Weld County Birds

2022-05-02 Thread KELLY ORMESHER
Hi All,

Today I headed out to Weld County on a rainy/snowy and windy day. In one week,
there's a noticeable increase in birds. The Lark Buntings, Lark Sparrows, and
Bullock's Orioles have returned. Interestingly, as I drove a stretch along
CR89, I noticed three Swainson's Hawks in less than 1/4 mile that were all
standing on the ground, tucked in behind yucca plants getting some protection
from the wind and rain.

At Crow Valley, I encountered an Ash-throated Flycatcher along Crow Creek south
of the group picnic area. I also found a Least Flycatcher in the Yellow Current
shrubs along with three Blue-gray Gnatcatchers. An Eastern Bluebird has
returned along with a Brown Thrasher.

Norma's Grove had at least seven Swainson's Thrushes and a great variety of
sparrows.

Happy birding,
Kelly Ormesher

[cobirds] Weld County Birds

2014-07-09 Thread JBreitsch - Denver
Date: 9 July 2014
Time: 1030-1130

It took me a few days to chase down these birds, but I followed up on the
Mountain Plover sightings from Mark Chavez (I believe on the 6th or 7th of
July).
In the same area, I found 3 Mountain Plovers, and I also found and
photographed a McCown's Longspur just a little east of there and a
Grasshopper Sparrow just a little west of there.

There was a truck parked along the road for pipeline construction. The
entire time I was there, I only saw two other vehicles. The first scared
one of the plovers just as he was getting really close to me. The other
blew up my chance at getting a better picture of the sparrow. Timing. Oh,
well. I remind myself that roads are for driving and it's me that's being
the nuisance. Sigh

I visited the Poudre Trail along 35th Avenue in north Greeley and found:
mute swans, coots, horned grebes, belted kingfishers, bald eagles, canada
geese (min max), snow geese (no ross), redheads, mallards, gb herons,
ringed-billed gulls, american wigeon, ring-necked duck, common goldeneye,
northern harrier, and a common merganser. Not bad for one hour on foot on
the trail. It is amazing how quickly 2000+ Canada geese can vacate a lake
when 2 bald eagles come soaring in.
