[cobirds] Weld County Today

2015-03-16 Thread Nick Moore
I took a rather easy day wandering around the Greely area today. Water it's
number were decent and ring-billed gulls were around in very high numbers but
many winter species, like Herring Gull were difficult to find.

The lower Latham area had thousands of ring-billed gulls between behren's
reservoir and and lower Latham itself. Pintail, green-winged teal and redhead
were best represented. A very good number of Canada and Cackling geese remain.
Two Greater White-fronted Geese were at Loloff. The best bird was a female
Mexican x Mallard also at Loloff. My only Herring gull of the day was at Lower
Latham in flight.

Eaton and Evans Cemetery had little diversity but both had Brown Creeper and
Eaton had a single Golden-crowned Kinglet.

Wind hit me at Wood's Lake and a huge number of purely ring-billed gulls and
good number of ducks were around there and a Windsor lake. But the late
afternoon heat waves and real waves led me to miss a lot.

A nice day out in the sun.

Windsor Reservoir was astonishingly packed with birds. At least 50k Cackling
Geese, maybe 100k. Nearly 10k Common Mergs. A couple thousand gulls. Due to
numbers and distance, hard to sort thru. 7 LBB Gulls and 5 THAYER'S the rarest

Glenmere Park was a potpourri of more montane birds, the highlight being a
flock of 21 Red Crossbills, mixed type 3 and 5. Also Mtn Chicks and nearly 20
RB Nuts

2014-10-17 Thread 'Steven Mlodinow' via Colorado Birds
Greetings All
Today I wandered around SW Weld County
The biggest highlight was an apparent YELLOW PALM WARBLER at Eaton Cemetery
(which is just SE of town). The bird was hanging out deep within the cover of
conifers, and eventually flew across the street to a private residence. Photos
to be posted in a day or two. Also at Eaton Cemetery was a MONTANE DOWNY
WOODPECKER with only two white spots on its wing coverts, and a Mountain
Chickadee

At Linn Grove Cemetery, a MISSISSIPPI KITE soared southward on thermals. Also
there were 2 Mountain Chickadees and a GC Kinglet.

Other highlights included a RN Phalarope at Lower Latham, a THAYER'S GULL at
Windsor Reservoir (note that Windsor Lake is nearly birdless), a MEXICAN DUCK
female and hybrid male at Stewarts' Pond, and 2 late Cattle Egrets at Union
Reservoir.

2014-10-17 Thread DAVID A LEATHERMAN
Steve et al,
You always seem to shake a few apples from the trees, even when the farmers and
calendar told us they've been picked over.

Beating a dead horse, re the Palm Warbler at Eaton, I would wager it was inside
the spruce seeking out hackberry psyllid adults moving from the myriad
hackberries nearby to overwinter within the spruce crowns. Your description
sounds exactly like what the Grandview Cemetery Cape May Warbler did within
spruce near hackberries last October here in Fort Collins.

I would remind everyone Linn Grove Cemetery is in Greeley a couple miles east
of Highway 85 off E. 18th Street.

Seems to be a definite dispersal of good numbers of Mountain Chickadees (and
perhaps Golden-crowned Kinglets) from the mountains to the plains this autumn.

Banner Lakes SWA was a bit slow on water-birding front but did have 3 WILLOW
FLYCATCHERS

At the wild animal reserve about 3 miles south of Banner (there is a sign for
it off CO 52), about 50 gulls were lounging at the side of this narrow road,
including a one-year old LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL, and at LUNA Reservoir there
was a juv LAUGHING GULL- morning light sucks and heat shimmer can be an issue,
so early to mid afternoon, when clouds first roll in but thunderstorms are
distant threat, is best.

Loloff was packed with birds today, including a spiffy male Mexican Duck

At Glenmere Park in Greeley, the herons of mostly hatched, no sign of that
Mexican Duck, but there was a juv montane Hairy Woodpecker and a Broad-tailed
Humm. At Duck Lake in Larimer County, there was a Shoveler x BW Teal male.

Union had no birds beyond an abundance or Western/Clark's Grebes, Latham was
birdless, and Ish looks fabulous but had relatively few birds

[cobirds] Weld County Today: Mtn Plover and RN Duck x Lesser Scaup

2012-04-05 Thread Steven Mlodinow
Greetings All,

Well, today was mostly negative data gathering. The only migrant, beyond
robins, grackles, and such, that I encountered at Crow Valley Campground was a
Northern Mockingbird. BYO Playa was birdless. The Murphy's Pasture area had few
birds, but a burn along Weld CR 96, about 2 miles west of Weld CR 69, had a
Mountain Plover on it.

The dairy water treatment ponds (anyone have a better title?) along Weld CR 51
north of Kersey (at intersection with Weld CR 62.5, on westside of 51) had
250 Lesser Scaup, 1 Greater Scaup, and one fine Lesser Scaup x Ring-necked Duck
hybrid.

The Weld CR 59 ponds, se. of Kersey, still had avocets and 13 LB Dowitchers,
but no Dunlin or BN Stilt.
There were plenty of birds at Loloff Reservoir, but nada of interest.
The flooded areas near L Latham and Beebe Draw were nearly avian-free zones,
excepting meadowlarks and blackbirds.

Union Reservoir is starting to gather a nice flock of Clark's and Western
Grebes, and has a few Eared and Horned Grebes, but little else.

[cobirds] Weld County today

2011-10-09 Thread Steven Mlodinow
Greetings All,

Well, today started off much as yesterday ended, but with more wind and less
rain.
Nonetheless, it was a rather tough go.

BYO Playa still had shorebirds, but nothing new, with a golden-plover being the
best bird.
Given that water is no longer scarce on the Pawnee, passerines were not drawn
to this spot :o)

Crow Valley Campground was quite birdy, though the birds were quite skulking.
Highlights were

1 Eastern x Spotted Towhee (very much like Eastern in appearance)
1 Mountain WB Nuthatch
3 White-throated Sparrows
2 semi-late BG Gnatcatchers

Windsor Lake is still dull

I stopped at Kodak SWA on the way home, just south of Windsor on the s. side of
the Poudre River.
Egads, it was fun. Why? Because winds were light and the sun was out!!!

It was fairly birdy, with 3 WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS being the highlight.

Greetings All

Migration was sluggish today
At Crow Valley, the singular highlight was an AMERICAN REDSTART
There were no Empids, only one Swainson's Thrush, etc.

At a private ranch near Norma's Grove I had 2 WILSON'S WARBLER, which ebird
informs me is quite late

At Norma's Grove there was a tardy MOUNTAIN WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW

At Lower Latham, along road, there was a late WILLET

And at Loloff Res there was a slightly late SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER

There are still lots of ibis in Beebe's Draw. Might have had a hybrid... an odd
bird anyway. No clear Glossies.

Best Wishes and Good Cheer
