Re: Best book for learning Objective c and cocoa
I second that. Cocoa Programming for Mac OS X is an awesome resource for getting started, and remains a staple on my bookshelf. Scott Stevenson has a book coming out soon (http://theocacao.com/document.page/607); being a fan of his online writings I preordered it and got Rough Cuts access through OReilly's safari network, and I gotta say its an excellent tutorial as well as a good reference, and its not even finished yet. And of course, Apple's primers are (typically) helpful and often referenced themselves from within almost every Cocoa book you'll find. Some of them are either too simplistic to remain useful beyond a read, or so complicated as to be difficult to understand on the first (or tenth) pass. -nick -- Nick Peelman n...@peelman.us On Wed, Mar 31, 2010 at 11:40 AM, Steven Degutis wrote: > Depending on your level of experience with Cocoa and Objective-C, you may > benefit from Cocoa Programming for Mac OS X, by Big Nerd Ranch: > > http://www.bignerdranch.com/book/cocoa > ®_programming_for_mac®_os_x_3rd_edition > > -Steven > > On Wed, Mar 31, 2010 at 8:20 AM, Nikhil Khandelwal < > nikhil_khandel...@persistent.co.in> wrote: > >> Hi all, >> >> I am looking for books to learn Objective C and Cocoa. Re: Best book for learning Objective c and cocoa
I am fortunate to live within a few miles of Nerdbooks, and always look forward to trips that take me there. I am never disappointed, they always have a wonderful selection that you can actually browse through, and today's trip was no different. Since I mentioned them, I'll point out that they always sell at a substantial discount, and since most of their business is web based they operate out of a warehouse, but if you don't mind a warehouse, which I don't, it is a great place to visit. I am in no way related to, etc, etc. I am a happy customer. All that having been said, they had several new books (published 2010) , and I bought three. I almost didn't buy the one by Bill Cheeseman, because as I scanned through it, it didn't have as many images as the others. Boy, what a huge mistake that would have been. When I got home, I started reading "Cocoa Recipes for Mac OS X", and within a few pages, I had absolutely fallen in love with this book, and with Bill Cheeseman's gifted writing style. I always use more images than text when documenting anything, because I tend to write poorly. I never take the time to proofread, and to this day when I type, I look at the keyboard instead the screen. Never have mastered this process. So I tend to look for books that have more images, because that is the style I am used to... In my case, I figure that if I do screen capture with minimal text I minimize the typos I introduce in my un-proofed documents. I personally buy tons of books, most of the time I will read parts of them, and at some point something is not explained well enough to suit me, and they end up becoming a reference. I always know when this is going to happen, because I start jumping ahead. I think because Bill Cheeseman is in fact so gifted at writing, and explains things so well, this is going to be a really great book. I am very excited to have found it, and if you hadn't asked the question, I would have not made the trip to Nerdbooks, and would have missed this book. Boy, talk about the "Butterfly Effect". Apple's materials are usually very good, and they are free. In particular see, http://developer.apple.com/iphone/library/referencelibrary/GettingStarted/Learning_Objective-C_A_Primer/index.html#//apple_ref/doc/uid/TP40007594 http://developer.apple.com/iphone/library/documentation/cocoa/Conceptual/ObjectiveC/Introduction/introObjectiveC.html If you know C++, this is a help, http://pierre.chachatelier.fr/programmation/fichiers/cpp-objc-en.pdf For Cocoa see this, http://developer.apple.com/iphone/library/documentation/Cocoa/Conceptual/CocoaFundamentals/Introduction/Introduction.html And be sure to investigate Apple's sample code, for Mac OSX or iPhone depending on your interest. Re: Best book for learning Objective c and cocoa
HI The one from Apress: Learn Cocoa on the Mac written by Jack Nutting, David Mark and Jeff Lamarche is very good. It still have some humour in it too, something I really appreciate in a programming book. I'm new to Mac programming myself and found some really usefull tricks in that book. It shows basic things about Obj-C itself, but covers a very wide range of Cocoa features. Hope it helps. Eric. I believe my book is the newest, since it is reaching bookstore shelves (in the U.S.) this week: Cocoa Recipes for Mac OS X: The Vermont Recipes (Peachpit Press, 2nd Edition, 2010). I believe an ebook version is also available. It covers many of the new features in the Cocoa frameworks for Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard. It is a complete rewrite of the first edition, which was published in 2003 for Mac OS X 10.2 Jaguar, and the original Web version that first appeared in 2000 (if I recall correctly) for the Developer Preview version of Mac OS X. Like the 1st edition, the 2nd edition takes the approach of writing a complete Cocoa application from start to finish, instead of explaining separate bits and pieces of the Cocoa frameworks in isolation. It includes detailed chapters on application-related topics that aren't often covered in Cocoa books, such as creating Apple Help books using the new Snow Leopard format, and implementing AppleScript support. It assumes that you already know at least the basics of C and Objective-C, and it assumes some familiarity with object-oriented programming. The project files and a short errata page are already available on the book's Peachpit Web page. -- Bill Cheeseman b...@cheeseman.name ___ Cocoa-dev mailing list (Cocoa-dev@lists.apple.com) Please do not post admin requests or moderator comments to the list.
