RE: Why is my cocoon app an IE6 killer?

2002-10-04 Thread Ryan Agler

I experienced similar behavior awhile back. I did some fiddling, and
finally came to the conclusion that it had something to do with Tomcat's
Coyote connector. I commented out the Coyote connector in server.xml,
and used the old HTTP/1.1 test connector, and the problem went away. I
went so far as to submit a bug report (see
http://nagoya.apache.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=6 ), however I
havnt yet taken the time to do the HTTP traffic capture he recommended.

Subject: Why is my cocoon app an IE6 killer?

Hi,
most generally I would describe my problem with my cocoon-app as
follows:

When accessing a
- servlet generated site
- with (lots of) images
- using a recent versions of Internet Explorer (i.e.6) on windows
then IE stops loading images. And even better: from this moment on it
generally
doesn’t display images anymore, even from other sites until you restart
IE.

The problem only (but not necessarily) occurs with IE on windows,
but only on servlet generated sites.

I found reports on this problem in the tomcat-user list,
http://marc.theaimsgroup.com/?l=tomcat-user&m=103340719301191&w=2
but its not just tomcat related. It’s the same with jetty.

If someone likes to see the problem live, start a recent windows IE and
go to
http://www.helnwein.com/werke/theater/tafel_1.html
It's nothing wrong with the HTML and there is no JS at all.
The current server configuration is
c2.0.4-dev jetty 4.1 mod_jk 1.2 apache 2.0.42 – images directly from
apache
on a RH linux 7.2., Java 1.4.1.

Itested the following configurations with no effect to the problem:
c2.0.3 tomcat 4.0.5/4.1.12 standalone – images served by cocoon
c2.0.3 tomcat 4.0.5/4.1.12 standalone – images from an extra context
c2.0.3 tomcat 4.0.5/4.1.12 mod_webapp apache 1.3 – images served by
cocoon
c2.0.3 tomcat 4.0.5/4.1.12 mod_webapp apache 1.3 – images from an extra
context
c2.03 tomcat 4.0.5/4.1.12 mod_webapp apache 2.0.42 – images served by
cocoon
c2.0.3 tomcat 4.0.5/4.1.12 mod_webapp apache 2.0.42 – images served
from an extra context
c2.0.3 tomcat 4.0.5/4.1.12 mod_webapp apache 2.0.42 – images directly
from apache
c2.0.4-dev tomcat 4.0.5/4.1.12 mod_jk 1.2 apache 2.0.42 – images served
by cocoon
c2.0.4-dev tomcat 4.0.5/4.1.12 mod_jk 1.2 apache 2.0.42 – images from
an extra context
c2.0.4-dev tomcat 4.0.5/4.1.12 mod_jk 1.2 apache 2.0.42 – images
directly from apache
c2.0.4-dev jetty 4.1 mod_jk 1.2 apache 2.0.42 – images directly from
apache

This is really frustrating.
Does anyone have similar experiences or hints to solve the problem?
Please tell me!

Thanks
/Leo

Hi Cristina,

why don't you want the tag?? AFAIK there is no parameter to avoid
the output of and I think it would be bad, if the correct
encoding is not written to the head of the HTML file. So why don't you
like ?

Well, I have written an XLink processor a long time ago, because
XInclude has not really existed by then, but I interpreted XLink as
XInclude is interpreted today. So I guess, this is not what you are
looking for.

For what purpose would you like to use it?

How to insert multiple rows with a database actions.

2002-10-04 Thread Antonio Gallardo Rivera

Can someone help me?

I need to insert multple rows at once. How I can do that. I ask because the
only docs I found is at
http://localhost:8080/cocoon/documents/userdocs/actions/database-actions.html
and there is only this: .(

Can someone provide a example of that?

"Inserting Multiple Rows - Sets

Once common task is to work on more than one row. If the rows are in different
tables, this is catered for by table-sets. Operating on multiple rows of one
table requires to mark columns that should vary and among those one, that
determines the number of rows to work on.

This is done with sets. All columns that cary a set attribute can vary, those,
that don't, are kept fixed during the operation. The column that is used to
determine the number of rows is required to have a value of master while all
others need to have a value of slave for the set attribute. There may be only
one master in a set.

Sets can be tagged either on column or on mode level but not both for a single
column. "

Thanks in advance,

How to synchronize combos ...

2002-10-04 Thread Antonio Gallardo Rivera

Hi!. I continue with this :) One of the problems is already solved.

I have a table called "clientsproducts" with 3 keys:

cli_id(Client)
cat_id (Category)
pro_id (Product)

In this example, the pro_id and cat_id are a complex key from the table
"products", because every product has a category. And one category can have
many products.

When I need to create a relation between a client and his products. I need to
know the category of this product. If the cli_id is fixed (the user already
selected a client in the last page then comes to this pages), then I need to
make the following behavior:

A) If the user select a product, then I need to select the category in the
combobox.
B) If the user selects a category, I need to refresh the combo of products, to
show only the products of this category.

As you can see I have two combos.

The point (B) Is done:

I made a "refresh" botton. When the user press this botton, the page send a
parameter called cat_id with the "cat_id" value from the combo "category".
When the same page is redone, it catch this parameter "category" and filter
the query of the "product's combo" based on the parameter "cat_id".

But, in the case (A), I cannot get the "cat_id" based on the "pro_id"
parameter of the request without make a query before all the procedure B
based on the parameter "pro_id" (This is what I dont want to do. If there is
another way to do that, please help me.

The queries runs with XSP.

esql:get-string is quite magic and may work, esp. . the other one would be
esql:get-blob.

Re: Servlet-Ouput as Cocoon-Input

2002-10-04 Thread Dario Liberman

What is the correct way of doing it?
I am new to cocoon too, but I see here serialization and deserialization
done perhaps unnecessary.
If the servlet used a DOMXML object to represent the outermost data, and
then serialized it to give it to cocoon, it is a waste.
Is there anyway to have the servlet give an XMLobject to the cocoon pipeline
instead of a character-stream?

In my case, I am used to WebMacro, that is similar to Velocity from apache.
In this architecture (more or less), the servlet receives a request, and
then processes an action (like searching something in the database) and then
puts objects in a hashtable (like a collection of javabeans representing the
query result) and then invokes a template. The template can use the objects
passed to the hashtable by specifying $keyname.method() for example. It has
primitive logic directives as iteration, if-then-else, and a set statement
in order to modify variables (this way you are forced to code well, since
most of the logic must be in a java class, not in the template). This output
then can be sent to the response stream, or to a file or to wherever you
like (but 99% of the time you set it to the response).

I like this architecture, and I would like to mix it with cocoon. So I
suppose that instead of WebMacro, I should be doing similar things with an
xsp, so that instead of a stream of characters I get as output an XMLobject
to introduce into the pipeline.

Does anybody have a simple starter example of how to do this? Because I like
to decide the final pipeline (decide the template) from the servlet. As far
as I could see, the usual way is to have a fixed pipeline map.

Also, I need to get hold of the final xmlobject from the pipeline (instead
of serializing it to the response) since I have to put this xml in a SOAP
message as the final result (not a webbrowser).
So what I need cocoon to be, is an invisible module that I put objects to it
in some hashtable as input and a template name (or map ref, as you like),
and gives me magically as output (after a pipeline of transformations with
automatic-caching, etc) a nice XMLobject. Then with it I do what I like (for
example put it in a soap message response/request or even put it back in a
cocoon-pipeline of transformations get yet another xmlobject).

Perhaps I am lost, since I managed to make cocoon2 work just today, on my
tomcat 4.1.2 container on jdk1.4 I was told to look for a manifest file
entry problem or rather unpack the war (I went with the second choice and
was just fine). Thanks to Vadim!!

Well, I hope someone did this style of programming.

Salutes,
Dario.

2002-10-04 Thread Antonio Gallardo Rivera

Hey, Patrick for me this issue is important. :)

I think that every language, Cocoon must have a naming convention. It saves
time to all the users.

We need help here from one of the BIG developers, that can give us the light
to resolve this issue. ;)

R: R: embedding html in xml ?

2002-10-04 Thread Lorenzo De Sio

Luca,

the result of your example is:

value-of with escaping

value-of without escaping
well-formed Apache html

copy-of

which I guess is what you expected :-))

The key is that, I suppose, automatically escapes any
markup it encounters in any field, which I checked with
?cocoon-view=content .

Sample such output is:

I can confirm that you've still got the problem with IE 6 and SP1...

Though you don't explicitly state it, it sounds like if the same page is
servered as static HTML it renders properly? If so, it's just a guess, but
one possibility would be that there's a difference in the HTTP handling.
Perhaps the servlet engines are negotiating HTTP 1.0 vs. 1.1 for static
pages or vice versa? In such a case perhaps the servlet engine has a bug
and doesn't close the image streams exhausting some resource on IE? Or
similarly, perhaps it's an IE bug of the same type.

It seems to me the first place to look would be to see what the HTTP headers
have to say, though you may have to get pretty low level to see what the
differences might be.

You can place almost every file when you want.

There are some standards place for some files that depend of what version are
you using. Please check the samples/tutorial is a good intro.

I've a cocoon application that uses JSP XSP and XSL pages.
Developing Apache + Tomcat applications I used to put all my

SunShine-InsertTransformer: encoding problem

Hi,

I'm trying my way around SunShine and running into 2
problems:

1) I have an existing XML file with UTF-8 encoding. I
use InsertTransformer to add a new record. It does so
correctly, but changes the file encoding to ISO-8859-1
and replaces all non-English text with "С"s and
alike.

2) I have namespace declarations at the root elemet of
the file. After running it through the transformer,
the namespace declarations disappear.

Here is my sitemap:

And add-news-item.xml:

http://cocoon.apache.org/sunshine/1.0";>

content/news.xml
/news

Hello1

item[@id='test']

Any ideas on what I'm doing wrong?

Thanks,
-Alex

Re: Why is my cocoon app an IE6 killer?

I noted it 2 days ago. I noted that the Cocoon machine is not doing NOTHING
and the Internet explorer works like I am browsing a server placed somewhere
in Pluton!.

It does not look like a Cocoon problem. Because the java jobs was idle. But in
the Windows machine I saw like it was checking every file in the temps!

But in the same machine browsing with KDE-Konqueror 3.0.3 it works fine.

Here my environment:

LAN (100 Mb) - just this two computers (no other trafic):
I have a Linux machine (Cocoon Server) with:
Athlon XP 1.6 GHz, 512 MB, 40 GB
Red Hat Linux 7.3 (lastest patches)
Java 1.4.1
Tomcat 4.1.12
Cocoon 2.1 (last updated from CVS on 3-Oct-2002)

Client computer with Windows Me and IE 6 SP1.
Pentium III 750 MHz., 256 MB, 30 GB (Windows use only 5 GB of all disk space).
Windows Me (lastest patch)
IE 6.0 (SP1)

Maybe the question may be:

Why is IE6 an Cocoon App killer? and not like the subject of this mail ;)

If someone know why it happens, let know, pease.

HOW TO DEVELOP....

Hi! I'm developing my first application with Cocoon. I want to confirm
that what I am doing is correct.

This is my project structure:

MyFirstProject
\src
\docs
\web
 sitemap.xmap
 welcome.html
 \WEB-INF
  cocoon.xconf
  logkit.xconf
  web.xml
  \lib
\*.jar (including all the cocoon's jar files that comes with cocoon2)
  \classes

The *.xconf and *.xmap files are the same that cocoon brings with some
changes (e.g. changes to the pipelines).

Am I doing right?
Do I have always to put the .jar files in web/WEB-INF/lib (or links to
them)?
Do I have to write a pipeline to access to "welcome.html"?

Thanks in advance.

Why is my cocoon app an IE6 killer?

Hi,
most generally I would describe my problem with my cocoon-app as

Thanks

2.1-Dev and Tomcat 4.1.12 experiences

To all,

I wrote as of 2 days ago that I was getting the malformedURI error
inside Cocoon 2.1 Dev and just couldn't seem to figure out how leaving
me with a crippled build.

Today I decided to take a fresh look at the error logs(access.log
specifically).

First I attempted Antonio's technique as follows:

c:\Java\xml-cocoon2>build -Dinclude.webapp.libs=true
-Dinclude.scratchpad.libs=true installwar

Alas to no avail.

That is when I took the fresh look at the access.log.

Well to my surprise and/or not surprise with Windows XP it's consistent
irritation of not following a tried and true approach to filenames, etc
brought my attention to a most curious default installation path name
for Apache Tomcat 4.1.12.

For the life of me I cannot understand whoever develops Tomcat why they
even bother to make Windows friendly Pathnames, ala "C:\Program
Files\Apache Group\Tomcat 4.1>" by default, instead of forcing a
typical Unix convention.

I group all my Java stuff under a c:\Java> top directory.

So my path was c:\Java\Tomcat 4.1> (Note: Does this look conspicuous?)

Well first I like my path to reflect the release of software and I must
have been lazy the day I installed Tomcat.

Add/Remove Tomcat and Reinstall Tomcat I gave it a brand new directory
as follows:

c:\Java\Tomcat4.1.2> (Note: Does this look different? It should.)

Now applying Antonio's technique as follows:

c:\Java\xml-cocoon2>build -Dinclude.webapp.libs=true
-Dinclude.scratchpad.libs=true installwar

(Note: ignore wordwrap between the -Dincludes if they appear as such,
just a single space as billed)

And letting the Service instantiate Tomcat and extract the WAR file I
first of course touched http://localhost:8080/ to great fanfare.

Then I touched cocoon root http://localhost:8080/cocoon/ and Presto!!!

Success! I get a slick copy of
http://localhost:8080/cocoon/documents/index.html proving that pattern
matching for:

within sitemap.xmap works as billed, residing here:
C:\Java\Tomcat4.1.12\webapps\cocoon\sitemap.xmap

I cannot speak for Linux or various Unices which I would expect to be
more compliant that Windows but I can speak for XP when Pathnames will
bite you hard if you leave those spurious whitespaces between string
names.

Please try to use instead of .
If that doesn't help, and your SP *does* use out parameters, you need
to declare them according to jdbc, using tags in .

Please try to search the mailing list archives, I'm quite sure there
have been others that use MSSQL SPs with ESQL.

BTW most likely you don't need the "needs-query='true'".

Cocoon confusion

I've created a pipeline to access my welcome.html file like this:

When I put this on the browser:

http://localhost:8080/PendCobro/welcome.html

...I get this error message:
"Cocoon2 - Coccon confusion
engine failed in prosess"

I do not know what I am doing wrong.

On the other hand if I write an incorrect URL, e.g.:

http://localhost:8080/PendCobro/pp

I get correctly this message:
"Coccon2 - Resource not found"

So I think in the first case is finding the pipeline, but not
solving it well.

I'll appreciate any help, thanks.

General questions about caching in Cocoon

Does Cocoon provide a mechanism by which all pages on the site can be cached
(perhaps via a crawler)? I'm aware of the command-line interface (and had
trouble getting the crawler to get past the first page, but that's another
story). Ultimately, I would like to use Cocoon as a servlet but have as many
pages cached as possible at the "click of a button", as opposed to waiting
for each page to be requested. I suppose this could be done externally (with
my own crawler) but I was wondering if Cocoon had some built-in mechanism
for doing this.

Also, I am building a site that has three versions per page (Flash,
non-Flash, etc.) and that uses cookies to set a user's preference. All of my
cookie logic is specified in sitemap.xmap, so I am already committed to
using Cocoon as a servlet. Are there caching issues with such an approach?
If performance ultimately becomes a problem, I suppose I could statically
generate most of the pages and just use readers for each version of each
page, but that wouldn't be ideal, as certain portions of the site are indeed
dynamic.

Finally, if anyone has any words of wisdom with respect to using Cocoon for
serving multiple versions of a page (from the same URL), I'd be happy to
hear them.

Thanks,
Evan

multiple webapps sharing XSPs

Can a guru out there give me a hand?

I recently installed Tomcat 4.1.12 with the latest Cocoon CVS. I have 4
Cocoon webapps which share the cocoon jars, are all in
$TOMCAT_HOME/shared/lib. When I fire up Tomcat, the webapps get
initialized and the normal log files appear under each one's
WEB-INF/logs.

It starts getting crazy here -- All 4 webapps seem to write their logs
to ONE of the webpps' WEB-INF/logs when I start accessing pages. On top
of that, say webapp1 has a page called "test.xsp". I access "test.xsp",
it compiles just fine and the .class file appears in $TOMCAT_HOME/work,
etc. However, if the sitemap for webapp2 matches "test.xsp", the page
from webapp1 gets pulled from webapp1's cache and used!? No .class file
gets compiled for webapp2, unless I explicitly go in and "touch"
webapp2's test.xsp so cocoon thinks it has been modified.

I found that this only happens if the cocoon jars are shared (i.e. in
$TOMCAT_HOME/shared/lib), as opposed to each webapp having copies of the
jars in WEB-INF/lib. I have made the usual precautions of deleting the
work directory before starting Tomcat each time.

I suspect this has something to do with contexts? I say that because
the log files for all 4 webapps are all being written to a single
${context-root} (from logkit.xconf). Here is a snippet from my
server.xml if you can see anything wrong:

RE: R: embedding html in xml ?

Jessica & Lorenzo,

I'd like conducting a little experiment

let's suppose we have an XML like this:

well-formed http://www.apache.org";>Apache html

...and an XSL like this:

http://www.w3.org/1999/XSL/Transform";>

value-of with escaping

value-of without escaping

copy-of

..and a simple sitemap like:

...the result is that only "copy-of" respects the "tagging" of the HTML fragment.

Since I believe your method, somehow, works, could you please send me an example of
the output of the generation step (i.e. what
your XSP page retrieves from the database) ?

Why is my cocoon app an IE6 killer?

Hi,
most generally I would describe my problem with my cocoon-app as

Thanks
/Leo

BSF: defining XSLT extensions with scripting languages [Fwd: A feature suggestion (and a solution to ... Re: [Bsf-discussion] Where's the script code if in BSFEngine.call() ??? Request for help.]

Hi there,

a couple of weeks ago I misplaced a posting in the Cocoon-listserver lists with
respect to a BSF
("Bean Scripting Framework", used in quite a few places of Apache projects) engine not
working (the
correct place was Xalan and BSF).

This message is just to state, that BSF works and that the problem I ran into my own
implementation
of a scripting language (Rexx, cf. ,
) running under BSF has been resolved.

In order to present the entire case, I forward you the message clarifying the problem
and the
resolution mostly for BSF developers.

In addition you will find those files attached, which demonstrate how to define and
use an extension
to XSLT, where the function is implemented in Rexx and JavaScript. Maybe that helps
the one or other
solve problems.

Regards,

---rony

P.S.: I will be subscribed to the Cocoon lists for a week in case there are questions
w.r.t. BSF.

Hi,

on 2002-09-17 I sought help for the following problem:

-- cut here -
  Hi there,

in the course of tracing down a particular problem with a particular BSFEngine it
turns out that
it's call() method does *not* supply the script code to be executed, but rather the
name of the
function/method to be invoked and optional arguments.

So, could anyone shed some light where one could find the script code in such a
situation?

[The problem occurred for the first time with the RexxEngine, which assumes in the
call() method
that the code either is passed in as the first argument "object" or as the second
argument "name",
which seems to not be correct at all!

As Apache's Cocoon (acutally Xalan) employs BSF it would be very productive, if one
could write
  XSLT-extensions using the Rexx language.

But at the moment I am clueless, where to locate/retrieve the script-code to be
executed/passed to
the Rexx interpreter; the name of the function as well as the arguments arrive as
expected.]

Any help and any hints *very* welcome !

  Regards,

  ---rony
-- cut here -

In the meantime I found the solution, thanks to the very kind help of one of Xalan's
developers who
informed me, that prior to invoking BSFEngine.call() the method BSFEngine.exec() is
invoked, so that
it becomes possible for scripting engines to compile the script (if possible for that
language at
all).

So the solution was to "catch" the source in method BSFEngine.exec() and use it for
invocation in
method BSFEngine.call(). The appropriately adjusted RexxEninge.java and
RexxEngine.class can be
found at:

 or

(You could point either to the bsf*.jar in the above package or extend your BSF
environment with the
above Rexx BSF engine.)

The attached files, originally created by Gerald Michalitz, demonstrate the usage of
the XSLT
extension mechanism via BSF in Apache's Xalan (the Java implementation). As a matter
of fact the
supplied files allow you to use Apache's "publishing frontend" Cocoon for testing
purposes: this way
one can use any of the BSF-supported languages to create functions which can be
used/invoked in the
XSL-transformation process.

*Very* powerful stuff. Hence, I thought this might be interesting for readers of this
list (users as
well as developers). Mereley replace the Rexx-code with your language's code and
adjust the
programming language attribute to contain the name known to BSF.

---

FEATURE SUGGESTION for BSF: For purposes like this BSF *should* define a method
"BSFEngine.prepareScript()" with the same signature as BSFEngine.apply(): this method
should be
invoked immediately before "BSFEngine.call()". BSF-languages could then use this to
pre-compile the
code, interpreter-only languages could use this method to get a hold of the source
code method
BSFEngine.call() expects to be executed.
