Re: Link Livesites: http://www.ctg.albany.edu
Joerg I was browsing the white paper referred to; in http://www.ctg.albany.edu/publications/reports/xml?chapter=9 it mentions that XML files are connected to XSL files by placing links to the stylesheets at the top of the XML files. It then goes on to say: This significantly simplifies content management because it enables you to make changes to only one content file and make no changes to the stylesheets because the content is totally separated from the presentation. Figure 8 illustrates how these XML/XSL transformations occur within the Cocoon publishing framework. This is a little misleading and underplays the true value added by Cocoon in completely separating content from presentation - the connections happen in the sitemap; there is no need to specify stylesheets in your XML files; as soon as you do this you are implicitly mixing content and presentation. If you are able, I think some changes would help clarify the situation. Regards Derek [EMAIL PROTECTED] 30/06/2003 10:03:04 We had it already on the list last week, here is the official announcement. Hello Derek, yes, that's obviously misleading. But I'm not related to this page. After the mention on this list last week I only asked them to be listed on Cocoon's Livesites page and Jim Costello sent me this mail below. I added the link in the CVS and forwarded this mail, especially because of the impressive figures. Now the report: It's the typical Cocoon 1.x handling using processing instructions. But I don't know if they wrote their own component handling processing instructions or if the report is outdated or simlpy wrong. The X-Cocoon header clearly states that they use Cocoon 2.0.4, but he also wrote (in the mail below) that they still have Cocoon 1.x in use for a part of their homepage. I'm cc-ing Jim Costello, so he can read and clarify your objections. FYI Joerg Original Message Subject: RE: Link Livesites: http://www.ctg.albany.edu Date: Tue, 1 Jul 2003 09:03:26 -0400 From: Jim Costello [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: 'Joerg Heinicke' [EMAIL PROTECTED] Joerg and Derek, The white paper (which is nearly a year old) on our Web site does refer to XML applications we had developed using Cocoon 1, so that's why there is no mention of the sitemap of Cocoon2. In fact, that paper is directed to a general web site audience who may be wondering about the advantages/drawbacks of moving from an HTML-based website to an XML-based website. So while we do mention Cocoon since we use it, we primarily focused on general use of XML/XSL. The Web site itself uses Cocoon 2 - with the sitemap performing the functions as noted below of associating stylesheets with XML files - but we didn't start using Cocoon 2 until after we had written the paper. However, in Cocoon 1 the separation of content/style/logic was still achieved when properly implemented within the Cocoon 1 framework. So I don't think the point is incorrect, although I see where it may be a bit misleading or confusing to someone who is familiar with Cocoon. We can look to clarify this in the paper by stating that our references are to Cocoon 1 and that Cocoon 2 handles these things differently and more effectively through its use of the sitemap. But again, the paper is primarily directed to a general audience (not Cocoon specific) and not surprisingly, one of the main questions we'd hear when developing the paper was from Web developers who were familiar with HTML and JavaScript etc., but not too familiar with XML, and asked how you connected your XML files with your XSL stylesheets. That basic separation of content from style is still a big mystery to many HTML users. So that's why we explicitly mention the connection using processing instructions in the paper. Thanks for the comments. We'll try to clear up some of its misleading elements. Hi, I don't know if my site can be listed in your Live Sites, but i'm using XML/XSL files with tomcat/cocoon 1.8.2 to produce a static html website, for all the informative pages (around 1000 html files are created this way). You can see that here : http://www.histoiredumonde.net It's very useful, because no need of cooon on the production server, you serve simple html files. But the advantage is that u manage xml files only ! I'm using the redirect:write extension. I've put the cocoon logo, in my home page, in the bottom. So, if u think u can give me a link back.. i'll be proud. Thanks, and sorry for my poor english. === Vincent Majer http://www.histoiredumonde.net === - Please check that your question has not already been answered in the FAQ before posting. http://xml.apache.org/cocoon/faq/index.html To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I'm just setting up a new site which is dedicated to using Domino and Apache Cocoon. It's due to go live by the start of next week. Before you go live you may want to make sure that thepage background is set to white for all pages. As it is, it defaults to the browser background which may not be white. In that case looks rather like someone pasted togethergraphics fragments into a scrap book...

I know that this is a fairly specialised area in the world ofCocoon but thought you might be interested to have a look at the site - www.piacevole.com - and look forward to any feedback about it that you might have. I hope to be putting more in detail articles about Cocoon up there in the near future, specifically aimed at the Domino Developer audience. The artist manufactures one or several works of art, which are transferred to the Künstlerförderung Berlin. The Website will help in lending or selling this artwork. The money from this is used to support the programm and so on. The Frontend uses: - Linux + Apache HTTP + Tomcat - Cocoon 2.0.3 In the backend works: - Windows 2000 - IBM DB2 7.2 - OS:DRT DMS Server (http://www.optimal-systems.de/industrie/software/drt.php) All content is created in the DMS system which uses the DB2 for data storage. Cocoon acts as the view in a MVC framework with a special controller and businesslogic layer. All generators are xsp pages, which include the data from the backend via xml that is stored in the session. The application uses dynamic html, pdf and vrml output from different stylesheets. Re: Livesites: Be Blogging
watching eagerly. I think this (and other complete applications like it) will make a large difference for enlarging the cocoon community. Put bundles of code like the blog you are building up, rather than 'hello world' handwaves! When you are ready, an announcement at http://www.scripting.com/ scripting news will show off cocoon to hundereds of prospective users. Hopefully you will also include a short discussion of the history of development and issues that you ran into while making the blog, while the subject is fresh in your experience. This , in my opinion, would be a significant addition for the documentation project underway over on cocoon-dev. best regards bob phillips At 06:57 PM 4/29/2002 +0200, you wrote: Having finally implemented caching, my humble Cocoon2-based weblog should be able to withstand the hordes of developers that will be hitting it ;). Hello, Id just like to submit my sites powered entirely by Cocoon 2.1. For the last 3 years I have developed a Web Application for a couple small food-delivery companies, and growing. I've spent the last year converting my sites from Microsoft ASP/MSSQL to Cocoon XSP/MySQL, and not only is it nice to be Microsoft-free, but Cocoon's framework is unparalleled in it's power and manageability. Here they are, check them out: http://www.boonetakeout.com http://www.orderupdelivery.com http://www.datadreamers.com Thanks, Ryan Agler _ Join the worlds largest e-mail service with MSN Hotmail. http://www.hotmail.com - Please check that your question has not already been answered in the FAQ before posting. http://xml.apache.org/cocoon/faqs.html To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I would appreciate it if this site got listed in the Cocoon2 livesites list. URL: http://www.OWAL.co.uk/ Software: Cocoon2 The site is fairly simple but is designed to be easy to update. It includes a pdf brochure containing most of the website in one easily printable document. It is static rather than dynamically generated for speed reasons. The site is combined with non Cocoon/java technology as it uses the popular slashcode software for its latest news. Hi ! We like to run our site with cocoon 2. At the Moment we are using it for HTML-Generation, rendering dynamic SVG to PNG for banner-generation an for Price/Availabiliy-Tables, PDF for Print-Preview etc, and PS for dynamic generation of accomodation-catalogues for print. Our site is running on http://www.urlaubstage.de. There is also a WAP-page under construction under http://wap.urlaubstage.de. We are also selling our Application as ASP and like the way how the content shows up in differen Design on other Pages. Some Examples are: http://asp.triplemind.com/urlaubstage/query/index.html http://asp.triplemind.com/accomundo2/query/index.htm http://asp.triplemind.com/fewotip/query/index.html http://asp.triplemind.com/bischofsheim/query/index.html and many more. We wrote our own producers for generating Pages from DB Data, so that the design can be cascaded. If some content, template or static file is not found in one application, the generator tries to get it from the ancestor design. After working over a longer period of time with cocoon 2 (we tried cocoon 1.8 before, prior we used JSP) it wourld be very nice for us to be in your list of Livesites. It would be nice to hear from you, sincirly Christoph Gaffga Urlaubstage.de Triplemind Internet Service OHG 60386 Frankfurt Germany P.S.: Sorry for my bad english language. - Please check that your question has not already been answered in the FAQ before posting. http://xml.apache.org/cocoon/faqs.html To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
