[CODE4LIB] Design for Diversity, opening forum: Oct 16-17

2017-09-21 Thread Sarah Sweeney
The Design for Diversity project, supported by the IMLS, focuses on the ways in
which information systems embody and reinforce cultural norms, and asks how we
can design systems that account for diverse cultural materials and ways of
knowing. Our project therefore focuses on issues of diversity and inclusion in
areas like metadata, user interface, standards, algorithms, programming
languages, and operating systems. Based on a series of working meetings, we
will be developing a collaborative pedagogical toolkit to encourage inclusive
and ethical practices in information sciences and system design in the cultural
heritage sector.

I'm excited to let you know that registration is now open for the Design for
Diversity opening forum and working meeting October 16-17 in Boston,
Massachusetts: http://dsg.neu.edu/d4dreg2017

We've been really pleased and surprised by the strong expressions of interest
in our opening forum, and due to the limited size of the venue, we're not sure
we'll be able to accommodate everyone who wants to attend. Registration will be
on a first-come, first-served basis. However, in order to maximize
participation, we will also be offering a live stream of the event, live
tweeting, and other forms of virtual participation.

[CODE4LIB] Upcoming vote on fiscal continuity options

2017-09-21 Thread Galen Charlton
Hi,

Now that the Fiscal Continuity IG's report [1] is finalized except for any
errata that may trickle in, we'd like to proceed with calling the vote.

Taking up a suggestion Eric Hellman made in July, a draft of the ballot we
propose to put in the Diebold-o-tron is available here:

https://github.com/code4lib/fcig/blob/master/ballot_draft.md

Pull requests are welcome if folks wish to suggest or discuss modifications
to the ballot and voting process we're proposing; we can of course also
discuss here, though I suggest that if there ends up being a lot of mailing
list discussion about the ballot, we try to keep on a thread distinct from
substantive discussion of the report and the options it presents.

We suggest that voting start on 2 October and close on 30 October.

The voting period is a time for open discussion, debate, and community
analysis of the information presented in the FCIG Report. If you have any
questions about the FCIG report, this ballot, or any of the options
provided, please ask your questions on the Code4Lib listserv so that the
community can discuss them and so that previous conference volunteers, FCIG
members, and potential fiscal sponsors can provide more details as needed.

Indeed. I think I can fairly say that the FCIG does have a consensus
insofar that we recommend that we do not stick with the status quo.
The disagreement lies in which of the alternatives to pursue.

Just thought I’d weigh in from the CLIR/DLF perspective to say that we
understand why the report is laid out in the way it is, and don’t feel
slighted! Sections on the first four organizations analyzed (Fractured Atlas,
LITA/ALA, Nercomp, and CLIR/DLF) are here:

https://wiki.code4lib.org/FCIG_Report#Summary_of_Findings_from_Each_Organization

and groups that were interviewed after the report was written (Educopia, OLF,
Duraspace) appear in a different format in appendices. All the options that
remain in the running are nicely summarized:

https://wiki.code4lib.org/FCIG_Report#Table:_Summary_of_Options

(Maybe a direct link to that table would be helpful, in the ballot.)

Once again, a huge thank-you to the FCIG for wrangling this whole process in
service to the community! — Bethany
