[CODE4LIB] Systems - to librarian or not to librarian?
Late to the conversation, but my two cents: I would remove or make "MLIS a plus" . Like you, I've also noted the challenge that Libraries are facing while recruiting candidates with technical skills. Additionally, I am unaware of any library school that actually teaches library systems technology. As far as I can tell, most library systems folks learn on the job- I've certainly done my part in training library employees about how authentication and systems work and interact with each other. [CODE4LIB] Digital Asset Management systems
Hi: We are looking at Digital Asset Management systems and I am curious what systems other institutions chose and why. If you can, please let me know. I am happy to compile results and send to the group. If you would prefer your response be anonymized or not included, let me know. Thank you all so much! [CODE4LIB] Useful stats
In our Annual Report, our ERL has always provided a detailed list of database /resource usage. It is a ponderous pile of figures which few actually review. I'm looking at presenting usage data differently this year, and wondering how others may have approached this. Total ebooks, or articles downloaded- number of logins or searches to our discovery layer...? Any inspiration out there? Thanks! Re: [CODE4LIB] Email ticket system
We've been using LibAnswers and it hasn't been working. Every email sent to the system becomes a new ticket (even if it is from the same people on the same topic with the same subject line, etc.) From what Springshare has said, it isn't Springshare's fault. They have said that the way our email server manages headers is cutting off vital information that LibAnswers uses to decide if the ticket is new or not. Our IT department disagrees. Springshare's solution has been to tell us to only respond to the ticket within the LibAnswers interface. Not realistic. The system seems to work fine when it is a single reference librarian chatting with a single end user. But for some reason, the multiple stakeholders aspect of our tech issues just doesn't work. We had ZenDesk prior but the cost was prohibitive and they kept changing the cost structure, and charging more for less services. Regardless, we are now looking for a new ticketing system. But... first sentence - in bold- states that they are not getting rid of customer support for stand alone EzProxy- and that is reiterated throughout the communication. Your highlighted portion mentions sales alone. I read this as, if new libraries want EZProxy, they can get it- just hosted. As Chair of the Fiscal Sponsorship Working Group, I have co-signed the MOU with Bethany Nowviskie, Executive Director of DLF. There were 158 votes cast for the MOU, with 154 in favor and 4 opposed. 95 individuals asked to be listed on the wiki as publicly endorsing the MOU. This is a significant moment of collaboration and sustainability for Code4Lib, and I believe I can speak for the other members of the committee in saying that we are honored to have been entrusted to work on behalf of this community. Thank you to Galen, Coral, Chad, Carol, and Morgan from the committee and to Bethany and Sharon from CLIR / DLF. I have attached the MOU for your convenience, and this will be placed in the Code4Lib wiki. We have some streaming audio but not having a problem with Firefox, Chrome, Edge, or IE- we upload the file directly. example - http://scholarship.shu.edu/summer-institute/6/ Elizabeth Leonard Assistant Dean for Information Technologies and Collections Services University Libraries Seton Hall University 400 South Orange Avenue South Orange, NJ 07079 973-761-9445 -Original Message- From: Code for Libraries [mailto:CODE4LIB@LISTS.CLIR.ORG] On Behalf Of Joshua Hogan Sent: Thursday, July 27, 2017 9:49 AM To: CODE4LIB@LISTS.CLIR.ORG Subject: [CODE4LIB] Streaming Audio Files on Digital Commons Hello everyone, We have been streaming .mp3 audio files on Digital Commons (bepress) from our own streaming server using streaming software from Wowza since last year. In the past, we have had no problem streaming audio and video files, but we are now experiencing issues with .mp3 audio files only. The only way we can get our audio files to work consistently across desktop browsers is to revert to the flash protocol (rtmp). When we try to use an HTML5-compatible url (using the http protocol and a playlist.m3u8 extension at the end) the files have intermittent and idiosyncratic issues. In an attempt to fix these issues, we upgraded to the most recent version of Wowza (4.7.0) last week. Yesterday we were able to resolve some of these issues by enabling a previously disabled property on Wowza. Has anyone else experienced issues streaming video or audio files on Digital Commons or in another platform using Wowza and JWPlayer? If so, I'd love to hear some details as we try to troubleshoot. We do not want to use the flash urls as the main streaming url in light of the impending death of flash. We still believe that many, if not all, of the issues might be resolved if bepress upgrades to JWPlayer 7.12.2, which is the most recent stable version of the player. Digital Commons is currently using JWPlayer 7.8.4., which is several upgrades out of date. I appreciate any help you can give me. I concur with Tim's assessment. If folks have limited funds for professional development, they are less likely to become a member of an association that requires them to join another organization as a prerequisite to membership. Re: [CODE4LIB] Accessibility of Digital Collections
We are in this process as well. We use SiteImprove to track problems (and their Chrome add-on for spot checking). I find this tool is more user friendly than some of the others out there. Dragon transcription for generating transcripts for our audio content. We try to upload video to YouTube because they make it easy-ish to create closed captioning. We use the color contrast checker: http://webaim.org/resources/contrastchecker/ Most of our work is just slow forward movement; knowing what needs to be done and doing it. I wish there were more magic bullets! :) There's a very good list of Accessibility tutorials here: https://github.com/mgifford/a11y-courses and I'd encourage anyone who is interested to take courses. Re: [CODE4LIB] Experience migrating to Alma or OCLC WMS?
The challenge with WMS' Kb (and one that OCLC has struggled with and tried to fix, to their credit) is that the vendors generally supply the eresource files and they are not always accurate. They've taken great steps forward to allow community users to edit these resources and keep those changes when vendors send the (wrong) data again. Elizabeth Leonard 973-761-9445 -Original Message- From: Code for Libraries [mailto:CODE4LIB@LISTS.CLIR.ORG] On Behalf Of Kyle Banerjee Sent: Wednesday, May 3, 2017 4:52 PM To: CODE4LIB@LISTS.CLIR.ORG Subject: Re: [CODE4LIB] Experience migrating to Alma or OCLC WMS? These theoretically perform similar functions but are different in their strengths. CZ metadata is maintained algorithmically using data from many sources and can be enriched by libraries (though changes can also be be lost depending on what is going on). The CZ also contains many packages of electronic resources and can be used to maintain packages for groups. However, the CZ should not be seen as a substitute for OCLC as there are quality issues and many records obviously don't have OCLC numbers. All the same, it is one of the compelling features of Alma because it dramatically improves and simplifies electronic resource management. Short version is that OCLC is great for physical stuff and CZ is great for electronic stuff. I am less enthusiastic about Alma ILL -- definitely not an area of strength. kyle On Wed, May 3, 2017 at 1:25 PM, Josh Welker wrote: > In the case of Alma, does anyone have any feedback regarding the > "Community Zone" metadata feature compared to something like WorldCat? > And what about Alma's ILL? > > Joshua Welker > Information Technology Librarian > James C. Re: [CODE4LIB] Post-election statement draft - also waiting for merge
I love this. It gives me hope. Elizabeth Leonard From: Code for Libraries on behalf of Jason Bengtson Sent: Thursday, November 17, 2016 1:02:10 PM To: CODE4LIB@LISTS.CLIR.ORG Subject: Re: [CODE4LIB] Post-election statement draft - also waiting for merge Hi Bohyun, Well said. Thank you for your work on this. I've pasted the statement below, with a few suggested tweaks. I'm not sure if I would remember to check back about the merge (knowing me, probably not): Under ordinary circumstances, there shouldn't be a great need for Code4Lib to reiterate our values of diversity, equity, and inclusion. However, this year's contentious election season followed by many appalling acts of hate around the country has left us with no choice but to re-affirm our unfaltering support and strong commitment to these fundamental values. As technologists, we always look for ways to make things work better. We love efficiency; we love elegance; we aspire to be free of any pain point or bug in everything we design and build. We do this not only for the sake of efficiency, elegance, and our deeply-rooted desire to improve things; we do this for the sake of people. Our ultimate aspiration is to help people get things done with the tools we painstakingly create. For this, we try to understand our users, with all their differences in race, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, religion, disability, age, genetic information, veteran status, ancestry, national or ethnic origin, language, socio-economic background, citizenship status, etc. This is why we rely on empathy as one of the most important guiding principles in all we do as technologists. Without our such empathy, our work as a developer, designer, information specialist, and IT professional would be missing its heart. Code4Lib has a proud history of recognizing the lack of diversity in the technology sector as a serious problem and acting to address it head-on. In the Code4Lib community, diversity, equity, and inclusion are not mere words. They underpin all we do, be it Diversity Scholarships, the Newcomer Dinner, our Code of Conduct, or our decision regarding where to host our next Code4Lib conference. These actions represent and reflect our shared and cherished understanding that we always solve difficult problems better together. As a community that deeply values diversity, equity, and inclusion, Code4Lib will always be a welcoming and safe community for all who are passionate about information and technology. Everyone in our community is valued and respected regardless of what they look like, what their faiths are, what disabilities they may have, how they identify their gender, who they love, where they come from, what language they speak, or where they live. There is no place for bigotry, intolerance, hatred, harassment, or violence in Code4Lib. Today, we stand together in unshakeable support of diversity, equity, and inclusion.
