I am skeptical of this claim.

In 2013, if organizations are disabling javascript, tremendous parts of the web
are broken for them.

That said, the diebold-o-tron is FLOSS

[CODE4LIB] Code4Lib Journal Call for Papers (proposals due mid-Jan, publication anticipated mid-Apr)

2013-01-07 Thread Peter Murray
Call for Papers (and apologies for cross-posting):

The Code4Lib Journal (C4LJ) exists to foster community and share information
among those interested in the intersection of libraries, technology, and the
future.

We are now accepting proposals for publication in our 20th issue. Don't miss
out on this opportunity to share your ideas and experiences. To be included in
the 20th issue, which is scheduled for publication in mid April 2013, please
submit articles, abstracts, or proposals at:

 http://journal.code4lib.org/submit-proposal or to jour...@code4lib.org

by Friday, January 18, 2013. When submitting, please include the title or
subject of the proposal in the subject line of the email message.

C4LJ encourages creativity and flexibility, and the editors welcome submissions
across a broad variety of topics that support the mission of the journal.
Possible topics include, but are not limited to:

* Practical applications of library technology (both actual and
 hypothetical)
* Technology projects (failed, successful, or proposed), including
 how they were done and challenges faced
* Case studies
* Best practices
* Reviews
* Comparisons of third party software or libraries
* Analyses of library metadata for use with technology
* Project management and communication within the library environment
* Assessment and user studies

C4LJ strives to promote professional communication by minimizing the barriers
to publication. While articles should be of a high quality, they need not
follow any formal structure. Writers should aim for the middle ground between
blog posts and articles in traditional refereed journals. Where appropriate,
we encourage authors to submit code samples, algorithms, and pseudo-code. For
more information, visit
C4LJ's Article Guidelines or browse articles from the first 18 issues (issue
#19 anticipated this month) published on our website:

Remember, for consideration for the 20th issue, please send proposals,
abstracts, or draft articles to jour...@code4lib.org no later than Friday,
January 18, 2013.

Send in a submission. Your peers would like to hear what you are doing.

congratulate the five (5) winners of this year's minority and gender diversity

The awardees are:

May Chan, Burnaby Public Library
Myrna Morales, National Network of Libraries of Medicine New England Region
Sarah Shealy, Richland Library
Brian Wu, Graduate Student in Library and Information Sciences, UIUC
Emily Zervas, Rockingham Free Public Library

There was a very strong pool of applicants this year, and I believe this
reflects both the strength of our profession and of the Code4lib Community.

I would also like to express a deep appreciation to the members of the
scholarship committee, who worked around holiday schedules and travel. So, a
big thank you to Ed Corrado, Christina Salazar, Jodi Schneider, and Santi

Finally, once again a big thanks to Oregon State University Libraries and the

Code4lib and our efforts to continue to develop an inclusive community that
they provided the funding to make the scholarships happen.

The issue is that I would really like to participate in the RailsBridge
pre-conference, but I had proposed the morning Blacklight session before Jason
proposed the RailsBridge session. I would be willing to miss the RailsBridge
session if we had tremendous demand for the morning Blacklight session, but
that is not the impression I'm getting.

I have marked the morning Blacklight session as cancelled on the wiki and I
have added my name to the list of helpers for the RailsBridge session. The
afternoon Blacklight session is still happening, and will be targeted for folks
who are new to solr and rails.

Adam, thank you for offering to gear the hydra session to cover the necessary
parts of Blacklight. Shawn, you would be very welcome to join us at the
afternoon Blacklight session, or it sounds like you'll be able to get a
Blacklight intro in the Hydra session too.

 don't know enough to make that call, and we use DSpace already, instead of

 I am reaching the conclusion that we do not need the morning Blacklight
 session. I would like to cancel the morning Blacklight session and help out
 in the RailsBridge workshop instead, but I'm happy to have two Blacklight
 sessions if we have the demand for it.

 Are there any objections to canceling the morning Blacklight session?
