[CODE4LIB] mobile framework for Win 8 + iOS + Android?

2013-04-01 Thread Ken Irwin
Hi folks,

I'm looking for simple, JS-based mobile framework (like jQT, formerly jQuery
Touch) that looks good on both iOS and Win 8 (and, you know, everything else).

For this particular purpose I'm NOT looking for a responsive framework (e.g.
Bootstrap, Skeleton).

I just checked out jQT on a Win 8 phone, and it just plain doesn't work. The
sizing is funny and the links DON'T WORK.

So: does anyone either
(a) know how to get jQT to work on a Win8 phone, or
(b) know of another good mobile framework that will work well on Win8, iOS, and
Android?

I'm looking for something with simple implementation like jQT -- add a few
classes and div attributes to turn a boring long page into something that
behaves like a suite of pages.

Any ideas?

Thanks
Ken

[CODE4LIB] A question about voting points

2013-04-01 Thread David J. Fiander
So, I just voted for the Code4Lib 2014 location. There are two possible
venues, and I was given three points to apportion however I wish.

While having multiple votes, to spread around at will, makes a lot of
sense, shouldn't the number of votes each elector is granted be limited
to max(3, count(options)-1)? That is, when voting for a binary, I get
one vote, when voting on a choice of three items, I get two votes, and
for anything more than three choices, I get three votes?

I mean, realistically, one could give one vote to Austin and two votes
to Raleigh, but why bother?

well those three points become useful in the event of a tie. maybe i see
that its a tie, and change my mind, remove the 1 point from austin and give
it to raleigh. now raleigh has 2 more points than austin and you've
managed to put raleigh over the top.

not that i've ever done that before

Sounds like it is live through Sunday April 14th - voting closes

We should have an announce by Monday April 15th for successful host.

Hi All,

Just wanted to make everyone aware of the two great proposals that have been
submitted for C4L 2014 (Austin, TX and Raleigh, NC). We have put these on the
code4lib main web site - http://code4lib.org/node/486 and have started a c4l
wiki page for them which is also listed on this page.

Please take a look at these proposals and be ready to vote - coming soon...

Hi David,

You actually can vote 0-3 on any option, for as many total votes as
you like.

The optimal strategy, assuming that you actually prefer one option to
another, is to vote 3 for the option you prefer and 0 for all others.

To slightly change the subject, systems are a policy decision, not a
technical problem. In the case of voting for presentations (more
important to me that conference location), different voting systems
will generate a different mix of presentations. Think of the
difference between the American congress and a parliamentary system.

The question is, does code4lib want conference presentations that are
more “first past the post” [1] or more representative of the diversity
of interests of the code4lib crowd (like a parliamentary system). The
existing system reduces to a first past the post system, which means
that the presentations which more people prefer win, rather than
presentations that a smaller group of people might feel strongly
about.

This is a question that shouldn’t be decided by the technology; the
policy should decide the technology. A google form might work, and
certainly hand-counted emailed votes would, given the relative
smallness of the c4l community.

[CODE4LIB] Austin conference proposal

2013-04-01 Thread Joshua Gomez
FYI before you vote on the conference proposals.

The Austin proposal states: "The idea is to keep that great energy that is
generated at SXSWi rolling on through to the end of the Code4Lib conference
as well as connecting 2 communities that have a lot in common, but rarely
have the chance to meet."

I have gone to SxSW Interactive the past two years and I plan to continue
going in the future. I highly recommend it. However, attempting to attend
both SXSW Interactive and the ERL/code4lib mashup would be difficult. Here
would be the potential schedule:

Thursday March 6 Fly to Austin
Friday March 7 SXSW Interactive day 1
Saturday March 8 SXSW Interactive day 2
Sunday March 9 SXSW Interactive day 3
Monday March 10 SXSW Interactive day 4
Tuesday March 11 SXSW Interactive day 5

Wednesday March 12 nothing
Thursday March 13 nothing
Friday March 14 nothing
Saturday March 15 nothing
Sunday March 16 nothing

Monday March 17 ERL day 1
Tuesday March 18 ERL day 2
Wednesday March 19 ERL day 3 / code4lib precons
Thursday March 20 code4lib day 1
Friday March 21 code4lib day 2
Saturday March 22 code4lib day 3 / fly home

There are a few options here:
1) Fly to TX March 6, and stay there for 16 more days! <-- I suppose you
can fill out the interval between Interactive and ERL by attending the SXSW
Music Festival (March 12-16)
2) Fly home after Interactive and fly back to Austin 4 days later (6 if you
skip ERL)
3) Skip going to either Interactive or code4lib

I don't foresee any of these options keeping the energy from Interactive
rolling through code4lib. Cross pollination between groups is a great
idea, but trying to append 3 conferences to each other sounds exhausting to
me.

I'll also point out that the Diebolt-o-tron is used for all sorts of
code4lib voting. Usually there are many options, as with conference
proposals and t-shirt design. I will grant that weighted voting may
seem a bit over-flexible when there are only two options, but it works
quite well as a general solution.

[CODE4LIB] Tools for tracking software licenses

2013-04-01 Thread Wilhelmina Randtke
Can anyone recommend a tool for tracking licenses for software owned by the
library. The (almost only) requirement is that it be easy to set up and
maintain including maintenance by nontechnical people, but then it
obviously has to be secure. I want to keep some information about
purchases along with install codes and information about where to find
install files.

What I'm hoping for is any passingly popular content management system that
controls access to linked files, as well as to information stored in a
database. I don't have any support from a main campus IT department to
track licenses for the library or set up something secure. I'm almost
better going with spreadsheet and frequent emails, even though it's a
painful backwards way to keep records, but want to explore options.

Re: [CODE4LIB] Austin conference proposal

2013-04-01 Thread Cary Gordon
Well, you could go to the music conference :)

Seriously, we ran into this exact scenario for another event, and with that
one, there was a sizable attendee crossover. Those folks made it clear that
if we held our event a week after SXSWi, they would not be attending our
event.

I guess that the bet here is that there isn't much crossover for the
code4lib crowd.

It could just mean that you slightly prefer Raleigh.

The Drupal Association has adopted Instant Runoff Voting <
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Instant-runoff_voting> for its at-large board
positions. I am not sure that it makes sense for binary choices.

Personally, I think that we will be in good hands either way and would be
happy with a coin toss.

I would kind of like to see the total number of folks who voted.
