[CODE4LIB] Is Anyone Doing RFID Book Location or Stack Mapping?

2014-08-28 Thread Jarrell, Mark
Are there any libraries out there that are making use of RFID hardware/software
to help patrons know the precise location of books/items on the shelves? Or is
anyone use other stack mapping software to help patrons know the general
location of items on the shelf? If so, I have a few questions for you. Please
feel free to message me directly and I can compile the results into an
anonymous set to share with the group.

  1. Name of software & vendor
  2. Approximate time to implement
  3. Approximate cost to implement
  4. What types of hardware/software is involved in the process that wasn't
used previously?
  5. How does the customer locate the item on the shelf (e.g. Via handheld
tool, map linked to catalog record, etc.)
  6. Is there a way for the patron to find out the location of items that are
shelved in non-public areas (if a library branch is undergoing renovations)?
  7. Would you recommend this software/hardware method to other libraries? Why
or why not?

Re: [CODE4LIB] Is Anyone Doing RFID Book Location or Stack Mapping?

2014-08-28 Thread Salazar, Christina
I'm very interested in this topic too. My current understanding is that because
of interference basically due to the field of broadcast on the tags and the
fact that your shelves keep those tags in the books pretty close together, it
may be difficult to implement. We haven't tried doing this here (yet).

However, I'm interested in ANY INNOVATIVE way of using RFID other than security
or automated materials handling. I think the potential is there.

Basically we spent a good chunk of change to implement RFID here back in 2008,
when we first opened this library, not to mention the time to tag the books and
then an additional $30,000 or so to replace all the gates this past summer
because the hardware reached end of life (not a typical situation apparently)
and in truth this security function could have been accomplished better using
tattle tape. So I want to push other uses of RFID wherever I can so that I
don't feel like all this was a waste.

By the way, you might try asking this question on the RFID in libraries list
serv, but you may be met with just the sounds of crickets chirping. You also
may have run across Mick Fortune in your research, but it's worth taking a look
at his site to see what some of the possibilities are with RFID:
http://www.mickfortune.com/Wordpress/

PS Thank you so much for asking the question. I don't feel so alone now :)

Re: [CODE4LIB] Is Anyone Doing RFID Book Location or Stack Mapping?

2014-08-28 Thread Tom Cramer
We don't use RFID, but we do use a tool called StackMap to give a sense of the
general location of books in our main library.

For an example of the patron UX, click on the "map" link in a sample catalog
record, such as http://searchworks.stanford.edu/view/10474501. (Center column,
in the "At the Library" panel.)

The back end system (where Access Services updates call number range locations)
is, IMO, very nice and easy to use.

Technical implementation time was quite short on our end (a few weeks?), but
took longer on the specification, training and set up on StackMap / Access
Services' side.

Re: [CODE4LIB] Is Anyone Doing RFID Book Location or Stack Mapping?

2014-08-28 Thread Dave Caroline
My system is a private collection but operates with a public interface (web)
it uses unique barcodes which operate in a similar way to an rfid per item way.

1, me
2, not that long (add an input shelving screen, draw some maps(auto
drawn in my case), and add a link in the search results to a map
display)
3, not a lot(nothing) I wrote it for my own collection/archive
4, a barcode scanner, both hand held/and a wifi barcode scanner
5, uses the search screen, gets a link to the map
6, no difference in my case
7, yes, sure makes finding stuff easy, also makes for easy stock control

I dont see much difference software wise between rfid and barcode just
the way scanning is done.

The web interface has no map interface for security reasons but
internal screens get the map link.
I have saved a grab here
http://www.collection.archivist.info/archive/mirror/shelfview.php
I save an XY location, size and rotation for a shelf and the basic
room size in a table then draw automatically the room with an arrow
pointing to a highlighted stack.
one day the arrow position will show the approx offset along the shelf
as I always scan left to right.

2014-08-28 Thread Jason Stirnaman
Ray,
There are also good MARC libraries for Ruby, Python, Perl...
Here's an example implementing ruby-marc within a pipeline-able command-line
script:

I’ve had a lot of success with pymarc for this.

[CODE4LIB] CLARIFICATION : Anybody know a way to add a MARC tag on-mass to a file of MARC records

2014-08-28 Thread Schwartz, Raymond
Sorry for not being more explicit. I need to automated this in a script on our
voyager server to be performed monthly. So any windows programs like MarcEdit
would not be appropriate. Thanks again, /Ray

What language are you using? For Perl, using MARC::Record, there is an example

Re: [CODE4LIB] CLARIFICATION : Anybody know a way to add a MARC tag on-mass to a file of MARC records

2014-08-28 Thread McDonald, Stephen
You CAN do that with MarcEdit. I have several MarcEdit scripts which I use
regularly.

MarcEdit allows you to create Tasks, which are basically just a series of
standard MarcEdit operations in sequence, executed through a menu or by
assigning it to a keystroke combination.

MarcEdit also has a Script Wizard, which can create a VB script executing
MarcEdit COM functions. The resulting script can be further customized to do
logic which is not possible in the script wizard. I have a script which I run
frequently on batches of e-resource records, which modifies them to
vendor-neutral compliance, and adds certain fields depending on material type
and open access status.

The results of the international survey on specific projects or services

[CODE4LIB] Anyone have a list of exposed z39.50 endpoints?

2014-08-28 Thread Jay Gattuso
We have a colleague looking into giving our Public Lending Rights system some
TLC. This is the process we use to survey any library holdings and count any
holdings by New Zealand authors/producers.

I was asked if I knew of any lists of exposed z39.50 endpoints that we could
interrogate as part of our holdings survey. I thought this might be something
some of you have / could comment on.

We're interested in any library, public or private, and will happily take any
suggests on or off list, especially if you know of any endpoints that are
exposed but not specifically publicised.

Thanks in advance
